Join us for a conversation between long-time local activist and author Jane Honikman and historian Rachel Louise Moran (University of North Texas) on postpartum depression and parental mental health. This event celebrates the establishment of the Jane Honikman Papers at UCSB Library’s Special Research Collections and the publication of Moran’s new book, Blue: A History of Postpartum Depression in America, which draws on the collection. Honikman and Moran will explore the lasting impact of Honikman’s leadership of national and international non-profit organizations such as Postpartum Education for Parents (PEP) in Santa Barbara, the remarkable historical shifts in approaches to postpartum depression, and the crucial importance of parental mental health for families and communities.The event is cosponsored by the UCSB Center for Feminist Futures and the Health Justice and Community Initiative, and held in conjunction with UCSB Reads 2025.

The intention of this small group gathering is to provide support for expectant and postpartum parents/caregivers in nurturing their mental, emotional, and physical well-being. We’ll create a safe and supportive space where attendees can connect, reflect, and grow through their shared and lived experience of pregnancy into parenthood.Our intended audience includes pregnant individuals, new parents/caregivers, and those navigating the transition into parenthood up to one year, with a focus on accessible, inclusive, and facilitated peer support. Refreshments & light snacks will be provided. Older children up to about age three are welcome and care will be provided in the Children’s Garden.Held in the natural setting of the Children’s Garden at the SLO Botanical Garden, this event will offer guest speakers, guided journaling, peer support, and facilitated discussions, all rooted in evidence-based care and holistic wellness.
This group will meet once per week on Thursdays, from 10 until 11:30 am – from April 10 until May 15, for a six-week session.
Connect with nature through a guided nature tour and hands-on restoration activity at sites around the Campus Lagoon. Join UCSB Reads 2025 and the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration in the ongoing effort to restore Campus Point, transitioning it from a monoculture of iceplant to a diverse coastal bluff. You’ll have the chance to plant native species in soft, sandy soils and learn more about the Campus Point Restoration Project. The tour will also highlight the wildflowers blooming on Lagoon Island following the recent prescribed burn. The Mivos Quartet will give a free talk and concert in the Performing Arts Center Pavilion. They are devoted to bringing new string quartet music to audiences worldwide. The quartet has performed and closely collaborated with established and emerging composers representing a broad range of demographics and compositional aesthetics. Their 6 pm pre-concert talk will focus on performing, commissioning and collaborating on music being written today. For the *7:30 pm concert they will perform pieces by Victor Báez, Ingrid Laubrock, George Lewis and Cal Poly’s Julie Herndon.
