San Luis Obispo's California Polytechnic University is installing a 4.5 megawatt solar farm. The farm is being constructed on 18 acres of agricultural land just northwest of the Cal Poly campus. Upon completion, the farm will generate nearly 25 percent of the university's total energy needs.

Over the past few years, Paso Robles has started to build up its municipal solar energy infrastructure, after the 2013 adoption of the city's Climate Action Plan. In doing so, city administrators took advantage of a by-product of Proposition 39, passed by California voters in 2012.

Green energy—and the definition of that would depend on who you talk to—is a growing part of the Central Coast economy. Solar energy in particular has really taken off in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Monterey Counties.

According to Atascadero-based Solarponics, San Luis Obispo County has more solar generation per-capita than any other county in the nation. And in terms of major solar fields, the Central Coast's inland region has just about any other location beat.

A massive solar project in southeastern Monterey County got a unanimous thumbs up Wednesday from the Monterey County Planning Commission.

First Solar spokesman Steve Krum said members voted 8 to 0 in favor of approving the California Flats Solar Farm.

"The decision was to recommend to the Board of Supervisors to Certify the EIR, to approve the Development Agreement and approve the project," said Carol Allen, Senior Secretary for the Monterey County Resource Management Agency.

Plans to build a large solar project in the Cuyama Valley now have the unanimous support of the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors.

The supervisors voted on the project Tuesday afternoon after hearing from several speakers in favor of the project and none against, according to Jefferson Litten with the Community Environmental Council, an organization supporting the solar field.

This marks the first utility-scale solar project for the entire county.

A team of scientists at Cal Poly worked to test elements of a kite-like, solar-powered spacecraft Wednesday on the San Luis Obispo campus.

It's called the LightSail mission and it's built using components known as CubeSats developed at Cal Poly and Stanford University.

Wednesday's test was to include a full simulation of what the spacecraft will do in space, however a communications problem between the antenna and receiver caused a glitch in the testing. Another test has been scheduled for next week.

UPDATE: July 22, 2014 at 5:53 p.m.

The Santa Barbara County Planning Commission voted unanimously Tuesday afternoon to approve plans for a large solar project in the Cuyama Valley.

The proposal passed with a couple of amendments aimed at protecting California condors.

Jefferson Litten with the Community Environmental Council says public comment ran 19 to 2 in favor of the project.

The issue now heads to the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors.

The Island of Kaua'i is making a shift to solar for its residential power source, and it's using a San Luis Obispo based company to do it.

Work began in late June on a 12 megawatt (MW) system, which when finished next year should provide about five percent of the island's needs. It's the largest project to date for REC Solar.
