On the same afternoon the Whittier Fire ignited near a summer camp in Santa Barbara County, another fire broke out east of San Miguel, on the border of rural eastern Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties.

Recently, 11 families got the keys to their brand new homes in Atascadero. A ceremony featuring local politicians and plenty of picture-taking marked the end of a year and a half long building process. The new homeowners had built their own and each other’s homes, creating close neighbor to neighbor relations along the way.

The all-clear was put in place Thursday afternoon for a couple of elementary schools in San Miguel that were put on lockdown during the noon hour.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office says a report of shots fired in the area triggered the cautionary move.

The schools—Lillian Larsen and Almond Acres Charter Academy—were deemed safe after it was determined the sound of the shots had come from nearby Camp Roberts.

The National Guard was conducting live-fire exercises around the same time, according to the sheriff's report.

A San Miguel man is facing charges of breaking into local homes and installing wireless cameras in the bedrooms.

On May 18, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a report of a burglary at a home in the area of Bonita Place and Verde Place in San Miguel. A suspect was identified at that time.

After a month-long investigation, deputies arrested 34-year-old Eutimio Contreras Anguiano in connection with the case.
