A proposed new California State Parks cabin and campground project on the Central Coast is in the works. The site is located seven miles north of San Simeon, on an oceanside bluff west of Highway 1. State Parks wants to develop the project to provide more low-cost options for visitors, but the plan isn’t unanimously embraced by locals.

Piedras Blancas now a national monument

On Thursday, President Obama included Piedras Blancas in an expansion of the California Coastal National Monument.

A push to expand the California Coastal National Monument to include the Piedras Blancas Light Station in San Luis Obispo County, now has the full support of the County Board of Supervisors.

The highest and lowest tides of the year are peaking Wednesday morning along the Central Coast. They're known as King Tides and could cause some minor coastal flooding.

The National Weather Service in Oxnard also warns of strong rip currents at the beaches during periods of low tide.

The extreme tides also pose a danger for the newly born elephant seal pups at the rookery on the northern San Luis Obispo County coast.
