The journey of driving along Highway 1 through Big Sur Country is one of the most spiritual routes in America, but unless you’re a Big Sur local, you probably didn’t know that it’s also one of the most spirit filled realms on the West Coast. A massive landslide this past spring sealed off Highway 1 nine miles north of the San Luis Obispo/Monterey County line. Fortunately the dramatic realm of Big Sur Country south of the slide is still open and accessible. On Saturday, Central Coast freshman U.S. congressman Salud Carbajal announced the introduction of his first piece of legislation. With the California Clean Coast Act, Carbajal hopes to "permanently ban leasing of oil tracts off our coast, and thereby permanently banning offshore oil development off the California coast."

Monterey County voters back fracking ban

Monterey County is now the seventh county in California to ban fracking. Voters there approved Measure Z last Tuesday by a margin of 11 points.

The Cambria Land Trust will host Helvarg on Sunday afternoon from 3-5 on November 13, in Cambria at Vet's Hall. He'll also be signing books at Barnes & Noble Saturday afternoon November 12 and give a talk at the Central Coast Aquarium in Avila Beach the evening of November 12.

Vandenberg Air Force Base announced late Thursday morning that its beaches would resume normal operations because "the Tsunami Advisory has been terminated."

The National Weather Service tweeted at 12:40 p.m. that the "tsunami advisory for SW California has been canceled. No impacts or damages reported with this event."


The National Tsunami Warning Center issued a Tsunami Advisory on Thursday morning, following an 8.3 magnitude earthquake that hit on Wednesday afternoon off the coast of Chile.

Teams searching for the blue whale spotted this weekend off the California Coast, entangled in some sort of line, believe they've tracked it to the waters of Mexico.
