Zika case reported in Monterey County, first on Central Coast

CDC - James Gathany
Zika virus is spread through mosquito bites, but as July, 2016 there had yet to be a recorded case of it being spread this way in California.

The first Zika virus case on the Central Coast was reported recently in Monterey County.

The Monterey County Health Department said Monday that a resident contracted the disease while traveling to Central America in June and July and developed symptoms after returning to the U.S.

The infection was confirmed through lab testing and the individual was said to be recovering.

The California Department of Public Health's most recent report shows there have yet to be any Zika cases reported in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz or Ventura Counties.

However, there have been 114 cases reported statewide since tracking began last year. All have been travel-related.
