Youth in Action

Broadcast date: 12/4/2014

Although over the past few years’ important mental health and counseling services for at-risk youth in our schools have been severely cut, Youth in Action, sponsored by the San Luis Obispo County Probation Department, has continued to play a critical role using early prevention work as a solution to gang violence in the schools and within our communities.

The program works to build resiliency amongst youth so that they can develop the skills to resist gang violence and delinquency, and become successful members of our community. Launched in 2008, Youth in Action has reached over 800 youth in Paso Robles and in South County.

How does early intervention work? Does it really make an impact? How can the community promote prevention efforts?

Join host Fred Munroe as he speaks with Deputy Probation Officer Pedro Arroyo with the San Luis Obispo County Probation Department and Dr. Lisa Sweatt, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the M.S. Psychology Program with the Department of Psychology and Child Development at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo as they discuss the importance of prevention and early intervention on the impact of gang violence in our communities.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX.

Fred Munroe is a co-host of the KCBX talk show Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday afternoon from 1:00-2:00.
