What is Drug Court?

Broadcast date: 2/26/2015

The San Luis Obispo County Drug Court Program is a court supervised, comprehensive and intensive

program of treatment and accountability that utilizes collaboration between Drug and Alcohol Services, Probation, and the Court for non-violent defendants. The first Drug Court was established in Florida in 1989. Since then, interest in Drug Court has spread globally.

Drug Court has the ability to profoundly benefit the community because so many criminal offenses are substance abuse related. Substance abuse attacks and devastates the person as a whole and, thus, has far reaching effects. Drug Court not only treats the individual but also addresses the welfare of the participant’s family and of the entire community. In San Luis Obispo County, any person on formal probation, convicted of a non-violent felony that has primary or underlying substance abuse issues is eligible to participate in the voluntary Drug Court Program.

Join host Fred Munroe as he speaks with Clark Guest, Program Supervisor and Criminal Justice Treatment Coordinator with San Luis Obispo County Drug and Alcohol Services and graduates of the Drug Court Program as they discuss how the program provides alternatives to incarceration for individuals who are in the court system due to substance use disorders, while addressing the behavioral health needs of participants.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

Fred Munroe is a co-host of the KCBX talk show Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday afternoon from 1:00-2:00.
