Update: Relatively quiet weekend for Isla Vista's annual spring break party 'Deltopia'

UPDATE: Monday, April 4, 2015

The "locals only" push for student events in Isla Vista appears to be working as numbers for this weekend's spring break party were significantly lower than in years past.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office said over the weekend that citations and arrests during Deltopia were just a fraction of those issued during last year's event.

A community clean-up crew also told KCBX that the amount of trash left behind on city streets was down from previous years.

The Sheriff's Office says the annual Halloween celebration has had similar trends.

Original Story:

Beaches along a portion of Santa Barbara County's South Coast will be closed this weekend as leaders prepare for the potential event known as Floatopia.

The County's Community Services Department says the move is intended to prevent a re-occurrence of what was seen back in 2009, when thousands of people swarmed the beaches in Isla Vista.

The spring break-style party left behind trash and human waste.

The beaches have been closed every year since then as a deterrent, with the party moving inland to Isla Vista streets and renamed as Deltopia. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department will enforce the beach closure.

UCSB and The City of Goleta are working to keep the event small and local. Parking restrictions are set for the neighborhoods closest to Isla Vista.
