UPDATE: Full containment expected in Mesa Fire

UPDATE: July 1, 2015 at 5:10 p.m.

Full containment of the Mesa Fire that started Monday near La Purisima Mission in Lompoc is expected early this evening.  Santa Barbara County Fire said earlier today that the 320 acre fire was at 95 percent.

 
A cause has yet to be announced, but the department is looking for a couple of kids who may have been hiking in the area at the time.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department announced Tuesday morning that crews were gaining ground on the Mesa Fire burning near Lompoc and La Purisima Mission.

The fire was listed at 320 acres and 75 percent containment, according to Captain Dave Zaniboni. All mandatory evacuations have been lifted as a result.

Investigators said Tuesday they were looking for anyone with information about one or two individuals, most likely kids, who were on a hiking trail behind the water treatment plant at the time of the fire.

A brush fire, now being called the Mesa Fire, is burning near Lompoc in Santa Barbara County.

It started about 1:30 p.m. Monday and has burned about 300 acres as of 5:15 p.m. It's burning in heavy, dry brush in the hills just north of Lompoc in the Burton Mesa area.

Capt. David Zaniboni with Santa Barbara County fire said mandatory evacuation orders are in place.

"It is still actively burning-- zero percent containment. We have evacuations in place...there's approximately 1200 people affected by the evacuation," said Zaniboni.

An evacuation warning is in place for the Mission Hills area.

The Red Cross set up a shelter at the Trinity Church of the Nazarene on East North Avenue for those forced out of their homes.

The fire is threatening homes in the area and threatening the La Purisima Mission. Fire crews are standing by ready to protect the mission if needed.

Crews from Santa Barbara County and Cal Fire in San Luis Obispo are fighting this fire. Approximately 120 personnel are on the scene, four air tankers and three helicopters are also battling the fire from the air.

Animal Services said people who need help evacuating their animals can contact the the Lompoc Animal Shelter for assistance.
