Santa Barbara leaders not planning to appeal gang injunction ruling

The City of Santa Barbara will not work to overturn a recent court ruling denying local law enforcement's years-long push for a city-wide gang injunction.

Mayor Helene Schneider says the City Council accepts and respects Superior Court Judge Colleen Sterne's decision, and that the city will continue to use all local resources available to protect residents from gang violence. She made the official announcement at the start of Tuesday night's public council meeting.

Injunctions give police departments the power to control the actions of known gang members within the community when it's determined the gangs prevent people from going about their daily lives out of fear over gang activity.

Judge Sterne however ruled two weeks ago that gangs in Santa Barbara do not rise to the level of a verified nuisance, thus denying the request for an injunction.
