San Luis Obispo's Costume Capers set to close its doors the day after Halloween

A well-known Central Coast business will soon shut it doors, after more than 30 years of supplying wigs, masks, makeup, and Halloween outfits.

The owners of Costume Capers said Wednesday that they can no longer compete with big box holiday stores, so this will be their final Halloween season.

Owners Debi Hernandez and Keith Wetzel said internet shopping and the end of San Luis Obispo's Mardi Gras also played a role.

They said they're hoping the large inventory of costumes will go to good use with local theater companies once the store closes for good.

Hernandez said there's been an outpouring of support from the community since the closure was announced Wednesday.

"It's a little overwhelming—I mean overwhelming good," said Hernandez. "It's been great, we've had so much fun."

Costume Capers first opened in August of 1985... on Chorro Street near the Mission. It moved to Parker Street in 2008... and has been there since. The owners say their final day will be November first.
