San Luis Obispo takes top spot on 'Best College Towns' list

A new list of the nation's best college towns puts San Luis Obispo in the No. 1 spot. 

The website College Rank said SLO has a "kick-back-and-relax vibe" with super-friendly and super-healthy locals, all set in a scenic landscape.

The Central Coast city of city of roughly 46,000 residents is home to both California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) and Cuesta College students. Cal Poly recently topped 20,000 students for the first time in its history, and Cuesta College has enrollment of 13,000 (2010 figure).

San Luis Obispo is one of only two California cities in the top ten. Santa Cruz came in at number nine.

  3. Gainesville, Fla.
  4. Amherst, Mass.
  5. Boulder, Colo.
  6. Burlington, Vt.
  7. Charlottesville, Va.

  9. Santa Cruz, Calif.
  10. Athens, Ga.
