San Luis Obispo continues to ride wave of "best places" lists

The City of San Luis Obispo continues to grow in popularity as a travel destination, which could in part be attributed to its impressive rankings on several national "best" lists this year.

Most recently, the city was named one of the top swimming communities by USA Swimming, the national governing body for the sport.

It was named also the friendliest small town by real estate blog Movoto and it made Livability.com's best places to live list.

Molly Cano is San Luis Obispo's Tourism Manager and says all of the attention could be responsible for a recent spike in the number of visitors. She says either way, tourists staying in hotels help the city pay its bills.

"Tourism through the Transient Occupancy Tax—the TOT—is one of the top three producers into our general fund," said Cano. "Our city is able to then use those dollars that are collected for things like paving the street, supporting our public safety officers, and you know all of the things that are important to us as residents here in this community."
