Raising Awareness for Free Summer Food Program in Santa Barbara County

The No Kid Hungry campaign is raising awareness for its free summer food program.

Today nearly 300 children attended a concert at Grogan park in Santa Maria and got a free lunch of a peach, taco and milk.

Organizers want to get the word out to kids and their parents about the 39 locations around the county where children 18 and younger can get free meals during the summer.

Laura Capps with the No Kid Hungry campaign says summer is an important time for this program.

“One in four children suffer from childhood hunger, one in four children are what they call food insecure meaning that they don’t necessarily know where every meal is going to come from and summer is when hunger really spikes.” Capps said.

“When kids are out of school and they’re not in programs and they’re not being fed the delicious and healthy meals they get from their school during the year.”

The free food locations include Santa Maria, Guadalupe, Lompoc and Santa Barbara, Goleta, Isla Vista and Carpenteria.

Depending on the location kids can get breakfast, lunch and a snack.

Parents can text *summer food* to 877-877 to find a free food location near them.
