A massive landslide this past spring sealed off Highway 1 nine miles north of the San Luis Obispo/Monterey County line. Fortunately the dramatic realm of Big Sur Country south of the slide is still open and accessible. Tom Wilmer visits with Rory Cosma at the family-owned Ragged Point Inn and Resort, located 24-miles north of Cambria.

The mythic realm of Big Sur is an iconic destination for international travelers and Californians as well.

The journey getting there is an integral part of the experience. Driving north from Cambria it’s just 24 miles to Ragged Point.

Highway 1 wends along a broad marine terrace with the Santa Lucia Mountains looming in the distance to the east and the legendary Hearst Castle reposing on a mountaintop in the mid-distance.

Elephant seals cavort in the surf with a storybook lighthouse in the distance. And then the landscape abruptly transforms as the rugged Santa Lucia’s Mountains jog close to the shoreline.

Suddenly you’re navigating along a twisting and snaking, cliff-hugging highway One, hundreds of feet above the Pacific Ocean.
