New bridge for Bob Jones "City to the Sea" Trail

Randol White

A new stretch of the Bob Jones City-to-the-Sea trail is nearing completion in San Luis Obispo.

This newest addition is a bridge over Prefumo Creek that now connects the section of trail running from the north at Prado Road to its southern end at Los Osos Valley Road. A concrete footing for the bridge is scheduled to be poured later this week.

"This project is just one phase of the Bob Jones City to Sea Trail," said Dan Van Beveren, the city's project manager. "Once completed, it will provide bicyclists with a continuous class I bikeway between San Luis Obispo and Avila Beach."

The connector poses new traffic concerns for cyclists trying to navigate this busy intersection, which is why the city's public works will install new traffic signals in the coming weeks.

"[The signals] will include a new bicycle-specific phase set up so that bicyclists can cross safely at Los Osos Valley Road," said Van Beveren.

The project's next phase, still in the planning stage, includes a stretch of pathway originating at the historic Octagon Barn on South Higuera Rd.
