The City of Santa Barbara is in the planning stage for a new public park on 14.7 acres of land purchased this week.
The property sits in the Las Positas Valley along Arroyo Burro Creek.
Jill Zachary is the City's Parks and Recreation Director and said Wednesday that city staff is still working out the details regarding how the land will be best used.
"The property just transferred in the last couple of days," said Zachary. "We're planning to have a community celebration on site on March 16th, and as part of gearing up for that we'll be sort of outlining what we think the interim use is and access to the site."
Money for the $4 million purchase price came from a variety of public sources and was facilitated by the Trust for Public Land.
The sources include $2.7 million of Measure B funds through the Santa Barbara City Council, a $500,000 grant from the California Natural Resources Agency’s Environmental Enhancement and Mitigation Program, an additional $500,000 State Coastal Conservancy grant and $300,000 from Santa Barbara County's Coastal Resources Enhancement Fund.
A housing project called Veronica Meadows had previously been proposed property.
