Nepalese students at UCSB lead fundraising for earthquake relief

UCSB Current

The devastating earthquake that hit Nepal in late April is unifying a small group of UC Santa Barbara students.

These students are doing what they can to help family and friends who are half-a-world away.

Pawana Shrestha is working towards her Ph.D in electrical engineering at UCSB.

She said that before the quake hit, she only knew one other Nepalese student at the university. Now she and three others are working to raise money for infrastructure, food and water.

"We know that after a fews days in the media Nepal and this earthquake, might be forgotten. But for Nepal to recover, it'll take a long time. We need to rebuild the infrastructures that have been damaged," Shrestha said.

Shrestha said the funds will go to a Nepal-based charitythat focuses on immediate relief and long-term rebuilding efforts.
