Librarian sees new UCSB Library as a 'game-changing' resource for students

Spencer Bruttig, UC Santa Barbara

A recently renovated facility opens its doors this week to Central Coast students.

After more than two years of construction the completed University Library at UC Santa Barbara is open for student-use.

It's updated to combine its original aspects, like a book collection of more than three million volumes, with new technology and workspaces.

Denise Stephens is the University Librarian and said the upgrade will help students in a variety of ways.

"We think we've helped to advance the library's capacity to serve modern scholars here at UCSB. And it really does create a game-changing impact, not only for the library itself, but I think also for UCSB in terms of what the student experience can be," said Stephens.

The new design features recycled materials and includes eco-friendly features like efficient lighting and drought-tolerant plants.

UCSB estimates the building costs at $76 million.

The university will host a grand opening for the facility in the coming days.
