Let’s Dig into the Viticulture of Wine

Broadcast date: 2/12/2015

In 2013 in California, grapes accounted for more than 878,000 acres of the state’s agricultural crops.

Here on the Central Coast we are home to about 30 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) and have become a distinguished location for many varieties of wine. Although the region’s wine history dates back hundreds of years to the early Franciscan monks, it is within the past decade that the wine industry has rapidly expanded and matured, creating a world class destination for wine lovers.

With more than 700 wineries between Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and Santa Cruz counties, there is a great variation in grape growing methods and wine making practices. Since the missionaries first began, traditions and techniques have changed, and as the industry has become more modernized and grown, many in the business have recognized the importance and need to change their practices to protect our environment and sustain the business.

What is the history and evolution of grape growing and wine making on the Central Coast? Where do we go from here?

Join host Fred Munroe as he speaks with experts in the local wine industry about our wine economy, past and current agricultural practices and the secret to the great wine of the Central Coast. Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

Fred Munroe is a co-host of the KCBX talk show Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday afternoon from 1:00-2:00. Fred has successfully divided his time as a local entrepreneur, political leader, and communicator.
