Is Isla Vista's party culture showing signs of change?

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department

Santa Barbara County law enforcement is saying a big thank you to the Isla Vista community for its cooperation during Deltopia this weekend.

The sheriff's department estimates the Deltopia crowd at roughly 10,000 people, a major decrease from last year's nearly 25,000 party-goers.

Spokesperson Kelly Hoover said that a lot of factors helped control the crowds like increased patrols and parking restrictions. But she said the students played the largest role in setting the tone by not encouraging out-of-towners to come to Isla Vista and by hosting student-only events.

Hoover said she is seeing a change in Isla Vista and that this event and Halloween are examples of a community shift.

She says some credit the recent mild Halloween to rain, but she believes there was more behind the change than just the weather.

"It couldn't have been more beautiful this past weekend and we still only had 10,00 people. So it does show that there is an attitude in Isla Vista with the students. They care about their reputation. They care about their community," said Hoover.

Last year's Deltopia event led to a massive riot which garnered national attention.
