Health alert: viral meningitis spreading on Cal Poly campus

San Luis Obispo County health officials are issuing a public health alert in response to a number of viral meningitis cases on the Cal Poly campus.

The Public Health Department said Friday that since late October, five cases have been diagnosed in students with four hospitalizations. Other cases of suspected viral meningitis have also been seen at the campus health center.

Health officials said they've seen no evidence yet that any of the cases are the bacterial form of the disease.

Viral meningitis is not as dangerous as bacterial and can't be treated with antibiotics. There is no vaccine either.

Symptoms include severe headache, stiff neck and sensitivity to light. If you have these symptoms, you're urged to see a doctor to rule out the bacterial form.

The California Department of Public Health has been notified.
