A gun bill introduced in the California legislature by Assemblymembers Das Williams (D-Santa Barbara) and Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) and Senator Hanna-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) passed the Senate Public Safety Committee Tuesday in Sacramento.
It now heads to the appropriations committee where a vote is expected before mid August. If it passes that hurdle too, it would then move to the Senate floor for a vote.
The bill is designed to temporarily remove firearms from people who are at risk for committing acts of violence. A judge would determine the validity of those claims.
Gun advocates worry the law could lead to improper gun removal.
Central Coast Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-Santa Barbara) has introduced a similar bill at the federal level, introduced in concert with Senators Barbara Boxer (D-California) and Dianne Feinstein (D-California).
