Focusing on Foster Care

Broadcast date: 11/6/2014

There are more than 900 children and youth in foster care throughout San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties at any given time. Reasons for foster care placement range from general neglect, an absent or incapacitated caretaker, relinquishment, exploitation, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, and severe neglect.

For these children and youth, foster care provides an opportunity for family-based treatment programs and an alternative to group homes or institutional care. For children and youth devastated by trauma, these services can foster hope.

How has the need for foster care changed over time? What therapeutic programs and other support are available for these children and youth? What is being done to help strengthen and preserve these families, when possible? How can the community partner with foster care programs to impact the future of these children?

Join host Fred Munroe as he speaks with guests Jim Roberts, CEO and founder of Family Care Network, Inc. and Connie Willard, the Human Services Manager for the San Luis Obispo County Department of Social Services to discuss the importance of therapeutic foster care and family support services to improve the lives of children, youth and families affected by trauma on the Central Coast.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX.

Fred Munroe is a co-host of the KCBX talk show Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday afternoon from 1:00-2:00.
