Female student attacked early Wednesday morning in San Luis Obispo

The San Luis Obispo Police Department is looking for the person who attacked a 21-year-old female student early Wednesday morning near the downtown.

Investigators say the woman was walking alone on Fredericks Street when a man jumped out of some bushes and grabbed her. Police say the victim was unharmed and able to get away.

This makes the second attack this month. Last week a 20-year-old San Luis Obispo woman fought off a man who attacked her as she left her apartment in the morning.

Police say 25-year-old Derrick Moore of Atascadero is being held as the suspect in that case.

In both instances the women say they did not know their attackers.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department issued the following safety tips in response to the recent attacks:

  • Whenever possible, walk with friends
  • Avoid walking alone after dark
  • Call for a taxi or a friend to give you a ride
  • When on campus use the university escort service
  • Pay attention to your surroundings
  • Stay on populated, well-lit streets
  • Have your cell phone accessible to call 9-1-1
  • If attacked, run to a well-lit or populated area
