Federal takeover of King City PD on track says Alejo

A Federal takeover of a Central Coast police department is moving forward according to the man who called for it.

Salinas Valley Assemblyman Luis Alejo said he's in talks with federal agencies, since his request last month for an investigation and takeover of the King City Police Department.

He says it will be challenging to proceed as there have only been a few instances in the state where this has actually happened.

"The most recent examples of that were the Oakland Police Department and Los Angeles after the Rampart scandals, but in King City we've seen problem after problem-- instability, a lack of permanent leadership," he said. "That certainly has put the public at risk in King City."

The city's police department has yet to fully recover from last year's corruption scandal that involved more than a third of the city's police force.

Most recently, the newly appointed police chief was fired without cause.
