Crews work in 'challenging' conditions to stabilize sliding road along Big Sur coast

Caltrans District 5

A stretch of Highway 1 in northern San Luis Obispo County famous for its road-closing rock and mud slides is getting some badly-needed upgrading.

Highway One is fully closed overnights between Gorda and Ragged Point five days a week as crews continue work on an area known as the Elephant Trunk Slide.

Rick Silva is the resident engineer and said it's challenging because of the steep cliff and limited work space. He says crews are currently drilling and placing metal piles.

"This area is sliding into the ocean right now, so this job is here just to stabilize this area," said Silva. "It should eliminate this portion of the road from sliding in further."

CalTrans says this crucial portion of the project should be completed by the end of next month.
