Cigarette sales to minors down in Santa Barbara County

Flickr member SuperFantastic

Santa Barbara County has an all time low in cigarette sales to minors down four percent this year according to the county's public health department.

In recent undercover operations only 36 out of 300 retailers sold to an underage decoy, or 12 percent. This is the lowest overall rate recorded for the county in the past 20-years.

Dawn Dunn runs the program and says the county is not yet tracking illegal sales of e-cigarettes.

"We are encouraged that the overall rates are down in our county but we're pretty concerned about electronic cigarettes because although they're illegal in our state for minors to possess they're out on the counter in most of our communities."

Cigarette sales to minors in unincorporated areas remain stable at 9% again this year.
