Central Coast Queer Archive Celebrates Chosen Family Pride

Broadcast date: 6/7/2018

“Chosen Families” are the networks we form around ourselves that transcend genetic bonds -- it can be an especially important part of queer experience where people are sometimes rejected by their own relatives or may feel out of place with traditional American social norms.

Now the History Center of San Luis Obispo County and the Central Coast Queer Archive Project are collaborating in a new campaign to share the stories of these Chosen Families, working to promote this effort, and asking the community for their involvement as part of Pride Month.

Join host Kris Kington Barker as she speaks with Eva Fina, Executive Director of the History Center of San Luis Obispo, and staff liaison to the centers public history committee, and Steven Ruszczycky, Ph.D. and Professor of American Literature with a focus on queer studies in the English Department at California Polytechnic State University, and Zachary McKiernan, a Professor of History at Cuesta College, as well as chair of the History Center's public history committee as they talk about their efforts to collect and share photographs of Chosen Families in SLO County and provide an invitation to the community to submit portraits of their own unique family groups through social media to become part of this unique and exciting project.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

Kris Kington-Barker is co-host of Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday on KCBX from 1:00—12:00 p.m. Kris has worked in healthcare fields ranging from mental health to hospital administration, and has served as a volunteer and board member for many Central Coast non-profit organizations.
