Cardiovascular Disease: What you need to know

Broadcast date: 9/10/2015

The cardiovascular diseases, heart disease and stroke, are the No. 2 and No. 3 causes of death in San Luis Obispo County. Experts with the American Heart Association suggest that as the average life expectancy continues to increase, deaths from heart disease, stroke, and heart failure will increase in the coming years. Do you know the warning signs?

Heart attack and stroke are considered life-and-death emergencies. Every second counts. In a stroke, time lost is brain lost. Today there are numerous life-saving treatments available for victims of heart attack and stroke, if caught early. How can cardiovascular disease be prevented? Or, what can be done to stop disease progression? If someone is having a heart attack or stroke what can I do?

Join host Fred Munroe as he speaks with Dr. Chris Porterfield, Board Certified in Cardiovascular Diseases and sub-specializing in Electrophysiology, Alan Iftiniuk, the Chief Executive Officer and President of French Hospital Medical Center, and Emily Reneau the San Luis Obispo Heart Walk Director for the American Heart Association as they discuss how to prevent common cardiovascular diseases, like heart attacks and stroke.

Central Coast Voices is sponsored by ACTION for Healthy Communities in collaboration with KCBX and made possible through underwriting by Joan Gellert-Sargen.

Fred Munroe is a co-host of the KCBX talk show Central Coast Voices, heard every Thursday afternoon from 1:00-2:00.
