Camp Hapitok's cancelled summer session—back on again

Camp Hapitok, local camp for children with speech and language disorders, was expected to shut down this summer, but now may continue running.

Recently, Friends of Hapitok announced the camp would have to shutter for the summer.

The problem was a county review found the camp's agreement opened the county up to liability issues. In order to be in compliance, the county needed to remove itself as the legal employer.

Dr. James Brescia is Superintendent of San Luis Obispo County Schools and a supporter of the program. He knew the change would be costly for the organization, so he's working to open up the camp facilities free of charge.

Marie Larson is the organization's president and said that they're thrilled to have worked out the issue, but are still a bit apprehensive.

"We need to raise $55,000 by the start of camp. But with the community support and the outpouring we got when we notified everybody that the camp was canceled, we're feeling confident that we'll be able to do that," said Larsen.

The money raised by Friends of Hapitok will cover service costs for liability and human resources, according to the organization.
