Cal Poly's organic farm named among the top ten student farms in the nation

Randol White - KCBX News

The organic farm at Cal Poly is being called one of the ten best university-based farms in the nation.

The organization Best College Reviews says the school's 11 acre farm in San Luis Obispo integrates well with the main campus and surrounding community, has good student interaction, and is sustainable.

Cal Poly's farm is certified organic by the California Certified Organic Farmers organization. It's managed by students, faculty and staff.

Fruits and vegetables produced by the farm are sold at local farmers markets, to area restaurants, and on the Cal Poly campus.

“We are offering students from every major across campus an opportunity to experience vegetable production under a strict certified protocol,” said Professor David Headrick, director of Cal Poly’s organic farm. “The recognition shows that our farm has demonstrated effectiveness in hands-on learning.”

The Cal Poly farm came in No. 10 out of the 20 ranked schools on the list. Four other California schools also made the cut:

  • (3) Deep Springs College
  • (7) UC Santa Cruz
  • (12) UC Davis
  • (19) Chico State.
