Cal Poly baseball team in the midst of record-breaking season

Owen Main/Fansmanship.com

The Cal Poly baseball team is moving into uncharted Division I territory after this weekend's sweep at the University of Hawaii, marking its second 4-0 week of the season. The Mustangs also had a 6-0 week in mid-March.

Several top polls—including Baseball America, Perfect Game, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association—name the Mustangs as the third best college baseball team in the nation.

The Mustangs have not had a losing week this season and have not lost back-to-back games. The team has swept five three-game series and have won all nine series of three games or more.

"Only one team in the history of Cal Poly Athletics has ever been ranked No. 1 in Division I, our women's volleyball team back in 1984, and the Cal Poly baseball team is just two notches away right now," said Eric Burdick with Cal Poly Athletics. "Who knows what will happen, maybe with a good weekend against Cal State Fullerton, we just might be up there for the second time in school history."

There are just five more weeks in the college baseball regular season.

New bleachers are being added at Cal Poly's Baggett Stadium to handle the larger crowds, and Burdick says those bleachers will be absolutely necessary should the team host playoff games.
