Cal Poly: The Cal Poly Shared Reading Program is called PREFACE and it involves all new Cal Poly students who read a pre-selected book during the summer as part of their orientation to the university. PREFACE in collaboration with SLO City-County Libraries is recruiting community volunteers to facilitate book discussions with Cal Poly students. Volunteer Discussion Facilitators need not be literature experts but people who enjoy reading and talking about books. All volunteers receive a free copy of the 2008 book choice “Montana 1948” and support materials. If you love reading and discussing books, you are invited to join in this unique, community-building project by volunteering to be a discussion facilitator on

SLO: Arts Space Obispo hosts a Collaboration in Rediscovering Fairy Tales with a painting exhibit featuring Jimmy Roberts & Brian Christopher called “Bread Crumbs” and the reception and Artist’s Talk is held tomorrow night, July 3rd in the Creamery at Art Space Obispo. The Reception is from 6 to 9 pm with the artist’s discussion beginning at 7. The exhibit continues through July 25th. S. Maria: If you’re thinking about attending classes at Allan Hancock College this Fall, you are welcome to attend a “START” session now. The Start program includes a basic skills assessment, an orientation to the college and counseling to help you get the most out of your college education. Morro Bay: In one month, on August 3rd Morro Bay hosts the Morro Bay Summer Faire featuring artists, food vendors and much more. This weekend in Cambria, the Pewter Plough Playhouse proudly presents "The Belle of Amherst" by William Luce, featuring Cambria teenager Emma Duncan in a one-woman show based on the life and work of the poet Emily Dickinson. This remarkable young actress makes her Playhouse debut in this special production, directed by renowned veteran of stage and screen, Nehemiah Persoff. The show opens July 5, with a traditional champagne gala, followed by a matinee performance on Sunday, July 6, and continuing with three shows each weekend throughout July. Morro Bay: Plan ahead for one Ed Gerhard’s performance at the Coalesce Bookstore in Morro Bay on July 18th. For more than 16 years this Grammy Award Winning guitarist has been an annual visitor and performer on the central coast, selling out most of his concerts. SLO: The Dallidet Adobe & Gardens (located at 1185 Pacific Street, San Luis
Obispo) is now open to the public two days a week. During the
summer, the public can enjoy this hidden treasure free of charge on
Friday mornings from 10am - 1pm and on Sundays from 1pm -4pm. As a
special bonus, the Dallidet docents are on hand Sundays to give guided
tours of the adobe. So, once again the Dallidet is open to the public
Fridays 10am -1pm and Sundays from 1pm -4pm. The summer hours are
effective until Labor Day weekend, 2008.

SLO: Tomorrow evening in San Luis Obispo it’s the Introduction Night for SLO School of Law at 6:00 PM. The evening is open to the public and provides an opportunity for those that are interested in the school or obtaining a law degree to come learn more and ask questions. S. Maria: This Friday the Non-Profit Support Center hosts a Media Panel Discussion in Santa Maria. If you would like to learn how to generate free publicity by writing an effective news release that receives media coverage, this is the seminar for you. Participants will learn: How to format a press release, tips on writing for the media –learn common errors and how to avoid them and how to have a strong message along with an angle that will make your announcement unique and stand apart. Following the lecture, attendees will have the rare opportunity to speak directly with a panel of local media professionals. The presentation takes place in Santa Maria at the Veteran’s Memorial Community Center, 313 W. Tunnell Street on Friday June 27th from 9am to 12 noon.
SLO: This Saturday at the downtown Library in San Luis Obispo, the writing group, “Sisters in Crime,” sponsors an all-genre workshop by novelist Sunny Frazier. The workshop is from 1 to 4 on Saturday, at the City/County Library on Palm Street. The topic is "Guerilla Tactics for Writers" and is free for members, of “Sisters in Crime” and $10 for non-members. Pismo Beach: This Sunday in Pismo Beach The Usonia Jazz Band performs with Special Guests the Reynolds Brothers from 1:00 - 5:00 PM. Swing dancers won't want to miss this month’s gathering of Basin Street Regulars, as Dawn Lambeth and the Usonia Jazz Band welcome several special guests -- guitarist John Reynolds, his washboard playing brother Ralf, and Arbors recording artist saxophonist John Smith. Master entertainers, the Reynolds Brothers are veterans of over 30 years of entertaining and have worked with many musical greats including Cab Calloway, John Jorgensen, and the Smothers Brothers and these brothers had long residencies at Disneyland. The afternoon promises high energy tunes, as well as selections from Dawn's most recent recording, "Let's Get Lost", which features both John Reynolds and John Smith. Ralf has promised to bring his 'cocktail' board for the soft, sweet numbers. The show is at the Pismo Beach Vets Hall, 780 Bello Street. Admission is $10 for nonmembers and downbeat is at 1pm. SLO: This Saturday there’s a special fundraiser for the family of long time San Luis Obispo construction worker Trent Toban that is to be held at Holland Ranch from 7:30 to 10:30. It’s a casino night benefiting the daughters and widow of Trent Tobin. Trent passed away from cancer and his family’s friends are rallying to help out with the financial needs of his family members.The event features food and drinks, entertainment, casino games and a live and silent auction. Adopt-A-Cat: The month of June is “Adopt-a-Shelter-cat Month.” If you’ve been thinking about adopting a furry, four-legged, purring house pet, this is a great time to visit your local humane society or Animal Shelter and select a pet for you and your family. Many shelters are reducing the fees for adopting a cat this month and for their spaying and neutering. Woods Humane Society is making special offers for cats during June; their number is 543-9316. The Santa Maria no-kill shelter has many adoptable cats for you; their number is 349-3435.
