Santa Maria: The Santa Maria Civic Theatre opens its 50th season with the world premiere of "Sugar! Oh, Sugar!" and is holding auditions next week. This is an old-fashioned Melodrama of Hawaii with books and lyrics by Wil Welsh and directed by Welsh. Acting auditions are scheduled at the theatre on Monday, July 7th, and Tuesday, July 8th, at 7 p.m. SMCT is located at1660 N. McClelland St., Santa Maria. Director Welsh is looking for seven actors (3 women and 4 men), ages 20-80, and four to five musicians (piano, bass, guitar, violin, and horn.) Ynez: The Cachuma Lake Recreation Area, a Santa Barbara County Park, offers adventures for the whole family, including exciting Wildlife Cruises, Nature Walks, a “hands on” Nature Center, and boat rentals. S. Barbara: This Sunday in Santa Barbara at the SOhO Jonathan McEuen performs. He is the son of John McEuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and he's mixed the family roots and his own musical talents to express a whole new combination of acoustic, electric and 'out of this world' guitar playing and singing! This is an all-ages show, one reviewer says of Jonathan, “he doesn't play the guitar, he is the guitar . . ." SLO: The United Way of San Luis Obispo launches a special ongoing educational project on August 2nd. It’s called the “Born Learning Trail” and it’s opening in Mitchell Park to promote early childhood learning. Born Learning is designed to help parents, caregivers and communities provide young children with early learning opportunities. Avila: The fourth annual ALS Central Coast Century Bike Ride is set for Saturday, July 19th in Avila Beach, to benefit the ALS Association, Greater Bay Area Chapter, which is the region that covers San Luis Obispo County. The ride is held at the Avila Beach Promenade in cooperation with the Avila Business Association and the Port San Luis Harbor District. Riders may ride individually or join a team. SLO: The SLO Downtown Criterium Classic takes place on Sunday July 20th. Over 10 city blocks are closed down to allow for a safe race and Volunteers are needed to help on the course. Some of the positions are to participate as barricade marshals, crossing marshals, to assist in registration, provide information to attendees and more. Volunteers receive a free T-shirt and a pass to the hospitality tent for refreshments and entry to the pre-Criterium event July 19th. S. Barbara: In Santa Barbara this Saturday the singer-songwriter concert series, Trinity Backstage, features local talents Kate Wallace, Doug Clegg and Kenny Edwards. The songwriters in the round show includes a “Pilgrim Chair” for a variety of other talented songwriters to take a seat and offer one or two tunes in the course of the evening. Barbara: The Music Academy of the West Festival 2008 has begun this week, with this Saturday’s concert featuring acclaimed conductor Larry Rachleff leading the Academy Festival Orchestra in its first concert of the Music Academy’s 2008 Summer Festival season at the Lobero Theatre. The concert begins at 8 pm, featuring Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major, op. 73, the concert. Described by the Chicago Tribune as a “take-charge maestro who invests everything he conducts with deep musical understanding,” Mr. Rachleff serves as music director of both the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and the San Antonio Symphony.
