Santa Barbara: The Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (CAF) presents SmArt Talks featuring artist Jennifer Vanderpool for July’s Forum Lounge for a 3 part series July 3, August 7th and Sept 4th, each discussion is held from 7-9 pm. This Thursday at 7 pm you are invited to join the conversation with artist Jennifer Vanderpool with her colorful, mixed media installations that address domesticity, constructed environments, and popular culture.
Vanderpool is an LA/SB based artist who creates work that includes sculpture, video, animation, audio, and performance elements.
SLO: Thursday is the beginning of the exhibit Summer Serendipity, a gala show of the Central Coast Watercolor Society in conjunction with the Steynberg Gallery, continuing through July 29th. The show includes the works of 22 of the area's finest watercolorists. Everyone is invited to the artists' reception at the Gallery on Saturday, July 5th, from 6 to 8 p.m. .The Steynberg Gallery is located at 1531 Monterey Street and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. 547-0278
SLO: The SLO County Band announces the summer concert series held at Mitchell Park in San Luis Obispo. These Thursday night shows are at 7 pm in Mitchell Park at Osos and Pismo Streets and allow you to enjoy the music this local band rehearses together for the enjoyment of all ages. There are also some special concerts in Arroyo Grande, Cayucos and Farmer’s Market in San luis Obispo.
This Thursday, July 3rd at 7 pm you can catch the Band in full force at Mitchell Park.
Arroyo Grande: The fourth of July is on Friday and the traditional 4th of July Celebration in the Village of Arroyo Grande at 1 pm. This free concert starts at 1:00pm at the Rotary Bandstand on Friday on the Village Green in the Historic Village of Arroyo Grande. The Village Band presents a program of stirring patriotic and popular music while the South County Historical Society sets the mood with traditional red, white and blue decorations, period costumes and BBQ. The Village Summer Concert Series is presented by the Arroyo Grande Village Improvement Association and the Arroyo Grande Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department.
The featured nonprofit organization on July 4th will be Arroyo Grande in Bloom. This group organizes projects that beautify and improve the appearance of Arroyo Grande. Representatives are on hand July 4th to offer information, enlist sponsors, sign up volunteers and give away starter plants. www.ArroyoGrandeVillage.org or 805-473-2250.
S. Barbara: The Santa Barbara Old Mission hosts a 4th of July Art show this Friday from 10am to 5 pm. Old Mission Art show is held every year on July 4th in Santa Barbara featuring well known local artists. You can find oil paintings, photography, unique jewelry, pottery, clothing & gift items and more. The show used to be at the Santa Barbara Mission for many years, but the new location is now 2227 Garden Street, corner of Garden and Pueblo. Friday July 4th from 10am to 5pm. Guadalupe: Coming up on the 5th of July, which is a Saturday, you are invited to participate in the Guadalupe Half Marathon and 10K Walk. It’s the second annual half marathon – which begins at 9 am and the 10k Walk starts up earlier, at 8 am. Proceeds benefit the Guadalupe Youth Programs. Both the run and the walk cover an out and back course along the Santa Maria River Levee, adjacent to rural farm fields. The walk is a non-competitive, non-timed event. Morro Bay: The Morro Bay Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 61 offers the “America’s Boating Course” for two weeks in July. The class is held July 7th and 14th from 7 pm to 9 pm at the Morro Bay City Library, located at 625 Harbor Street. Course topics include choosing and equipping a boat, choosing life jackets and other personal safety gear, fire prevention, handling boats, basic navigation skills, rules of the water and basic first aid and safety information. Many insurance companies offer discounts to graduates of this course. To register for the class held July 7th & 14th the number is 489-1963, pre-registration is required.

S. Barbara: The Santa Barbara Channel Swimming Association (SBCSA) hosts the 5th Annual Santa Barbara Channel Relay Swim to benefit the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation –all in support of ocean conservation in the Channel Islands. The Foundation was created to preserve, protect and promote America’s Underwater Treasures, the nation’s network of marine sanctuaries that now includes a marine national monument. The SBCSA is a volunteer, non-profit organization with directors and members from around the world, that promotes and celebrates marathon open water swims. The 5th Annual Santa Barbara Channel Relay Swim is scheduled for this weekend, June 27-28 and is open to anyone that can swim in the ocean for at least 20 minutes with ease. Participants board the Truth Aquatics vessel by 9:00 pm on Friday and the swim begins that evening from Santa Cruz Island. Join the team to take part in swimming from Santa Cruz Island to Goleta Beach outside of Santa Barbara. There are many ways to get involved and make a splash: You can swim or kayak the Channel; swim just the last leg; sponsor a swimmer or kayaker; volunteer or cheer on your favorite boat.

S. Barbara: A special fundraiser for Speaking of Stories is held this Sunday in Santa Barbara for “an afternoon at Riven Rock” from 3 to 6 pm honoring T.C. Boyle
You can join the garden party and traditional Afternoon Tea with finger sandwiches and Carolyn Butcher's famous homemade scones. T. C. Boyle is on hand to entertain with a reading from his novel Riven Rock. It’s a fundraiser, tickets are $100, all proceeds benefit Speaking of Stories, the event is this Sunday at 3 pm, for information the website is www.speakingofstories.org
Lompoc: This Sunday in Lompoc at La Purisima Mission there’s a free concert at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. The event is in conjunction with the Lompoc Flower Festival weekend with the Lompoc Music Association's annual concert at La Purisima Mission, which is free to the public. The hour-long program features two masterworks for chorus. Additionally, the winners of this year's Lompoc Music Association Scholarship Competition perform their solo selections as part of the concert. SLO: The fundraiser ChildSpree 2008 is the annual event that provides new school clothing and supplies to local 1st-12th graders. This year's ChildSpree is Saturday, July 19th from 7-9 a.m. You are inviting you to give or volunteer to help make a difference in a child's life and education. Sponsorship of a child is $100 and 100% of the contribution goes toward helping a child. Donations in any amount are appreciated. School supplies purchased to fill backpacks for the children and monetary contributions from individuals and businesses are welcome. Also, volunteer chaperones who accompany children in choosing items during the Spree are needed. Male and Spanish speaking volunteers are always in demand. SLO: Registration is now open for the Central Coast Writers’ Conference XXVI set for September 26 and 27, at Cuesta Community College. The conference offers 28 workshops in all genres of writing including fiction, nonfiction, children's literature, memoirs, mystery, screenwriting, freelancing, poetry, getting published and enhancing your overall creativity. This year’s keynoter is NY Times bestselling author Bob Mayer. He has 38 books published under his own name and the pen name Robert Doherty. He teaches novel writing and team-building. You can opt for Friday night only and Saturday only attendance at the conference. There is a writing competition and manuscript critique service and teenagers are welcome to participate in the Young Writers Program which offers the full conference package at a reduced price.
