Arroyo Grande: The fourth of July is on Friday and the traditional 4th of July Celebration in the Village of Arroyo Grande at 1 pm. This free concert starts at 1:00pm at the Rotary Bandstand on Friday on the Village Green in the Historic Village of Arroyo Grande. The Village Band presents a program of stirring patriotic and popular music while the South County Historical Society sets the mood with traditional red, white and blue decorations, period costumes and BBQ.  The Village Summer Concert Series is presented by the Arroyo Grande Village Improvement Association and the Arroyo Grande Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department. The featured nonprofit organization on July 4th will be Arroyo Grande in Bloom. This group organizes projects that beautify and improve the appearance of Arroyo Grande. Representatives are on hand July 4th to offer information, enlist sponsors, sign up volunteers and give away starter plants.  www.ArroyoGrandeVillage.org or 805-473-2250.

S. Barbara: The Santa Barbara Old Mission hosts a 4th of  July Art show this Friday from 10am to 5 pm. Old Mission Art show is held every year on July 4th in Santa Barbara featuring well known local artists. You can find oil paintings, photography, unique jewelry, pottery, clothing & gift items and more. The show used to be at the Santa Barbara Mission for many years, but the new location is now 2227 Garden Street, corner of Garden and Pueblo. Friday July 4th from 10am to 5pm. Just follow the balloons!!

Morro Bay: This weekend in Morro Bay is the 4th of July Art In The Park. Enjoy the work of California artisans as you stroll through the park on Morro Bay Blvd.  Food and drink is available for purchase and activities for families.

Arroyo Grande: The First Annual Firecracker Boogie is set for this Saturday featuring great music to help raise funds for the North County Humane Society Shelter. The fun begins at 1 pm at Biddle Regional Park, located east of Arroyo Grande on the road to Lopez Lake. Local band Dr. Danger and many other local pet loving musicians throughout the day play the blues to raise monies for the North County Humane Society Shelter. There is a $2 per car park entry fee. Food and refreshments are available and your generous donations to the shelter are encouraged. To get to Biddle Regional Park Exit 101 east on Grand Ave. which becomes Branch Ave. Follow signs to Lake Lopez. Turn right into Biddle Park at the sign. SLO: The San Luis Obispo Library offers a Summer Film Series in July. You are encouraged to “Celebrate Independence with Independents” every Saturday night in July beginning this week. Independent films are screened from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and admission is free. The theme of the series is “Celebrate Independence with Independents”. Four current independent films will be shown in the Library’s Community Room at 995 Palm St. Movie munchies are served. This weekend in Cambria, the Pewter Plough Playhouse proudly presents "The Belle of Amherst" by William Luce, featuring Cambria teenager Emma Duncan in a one-woman show based on the life and work of the poet Emily Dickinson. This remarkable young actress makes her Playhouse debut in this special production, directed by renowned veteran of stage and screen, Nehemiah Persoff. The show opens July 5, with a traditional champagne gala, followed by a matinee performance on Sunday, July 6, and continuing with three shows each weekend throughout July. SLO: Registration is now open for the Central Coast Writers’ Conference XXVI set for September 26 and 27, at Cuesta Community College. The conference offers 28 workshops in all genres of writing including fiction, nonfiction, children's literature, memoirs, mystery, screenwriting, freelancing, poetry, getting published and enhancing your overall creativity. This year’s keynoter is NY Times bestselling author Bob Mayer. He has 38 books published under his own name and the pen name Robert Doherty. He teaches novel writing and team-building. You can opt for Friday night only and Saturday only attendance at the conference. There is a writing competition and manuscript critique service and teenagers are welcome to participate in the Young Writers Program which offers the full conference package at a reduced price. S. Barbara: The 5th Annual Santa Barbara Channel Relay Swim is scheduled for this weekend, June 27-28 and is open to anyone that can swim in the ocean for at least 20 minutes with ease. There are many ways to get involved and make a splash: You can swim or kayak the Channel; swim just the last leg; sponsor a swimmer or kayaker; volunteer or cheer on your favorite boat.   For more info the website is:  http://santabarbarachannelswim.org

S. Barbara: On Saturday mornings from 7:30 to 10:00 am you can find the freshest fish at the Fisherman’s Market at the Santa Barbara Harbor. And the Maritime Museum is open Saturdays, offering docent-led tours of the Museum’s collections. It’s a great way to get the most from your visit in the museum, the tour is free with Museum admission and begins at 2 o’clock.

Summertime is a great time to visit the museums, zoos, botanic gardens and art centers in your local community. These organizations provide entertainment, education and many opportunities to continually improve our quality of life here on the Central Coast. Pack up the family, pull together a group of friends or enjoy a solo visit – no need to wait for out-of-town guests to find out what is happening in your own back yard. The Museum of Nature History in Santa Barbara has Planetarium shows all through the summer, for their complete schedule the website is sbnature.org.

Lompoc: This Sunday in Lompoc at La Purisima Mission there’s a free concert at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. The event is in conjunction with the Lompoc Flower Festival weekend with the Lompoc Music Association's annual concert at La Purisima Mission, which is free to the public.  The hour-long program features two masterworks for chorus. Additionally, the winners of this year's Lompoc Music Association Scholarship Competition perform their solo selections as part of the concert. SLO: This Saturday at the downtown Library in San Luis Obispo, the writing group, “Sisters in Crime,” sponsors an all-genre workshop by novelist Sunny Frazier. The workshop is from 1 to 4 on Saturday, at the City/County Library on Palm Street. The topic is "Guerilla Tactics for Writers" and is free for members, of “Sisters in Crime” and  $10 for non-members. Information: 528-7155.

S. Barbara: Next week begins UCSB Arts & Lectures presentation of Summer Cinema 2008 with eight thought-provoking summer films from around the globe. Screenings begin Wednesday July 2nd and continue through Wednesday, August 20, all begin at 7:30 pm in UCSB Campbell Hall. KCBXnet offers low-cost computer classes, our next scheduled 4-part series of classes on Microsoft Word are set for July. Beginning July 9th and for each continuing Wednesday you can spend 2 hours learning about the many ways to use Microsoft Word, after four weeks, you’re practically a pro.

This summer the PCPA Theaterfest presents six productions, celebrating a wide spectrum of theatre from the classic to the contemporary. Solvang starts with Godspell, which is the longest running off-Broadway musical--running now through July 27 with a live band on stage. The next four shows of the season open in Santa Maria and then transfer to the outdoor Festival Theater in Solvang, beginning with the world premiere drama, The Heart’s Desire by José Cruz González.  Ragtime, the Musical, an epic tale of a young America played out in song and dance.  The Imaginary Invalid—a French classic with scintillating satire on the medical profession. Morro Bay: Tonight at the Inn at Morro Bay it’s City Nights Jazz, presenting Los Angeles vocalist Judy Wexler. The music is from 7:30 to 10:30 with the Mike Raynor Group and Judy’s bop-oriented jazz stylings- she’s been described as a singer with “a warm, appealing voice and a healthy sense of swing.” For more info about Judy her website is www.judywexler.com and the band’s website is www.citynightsjazz.com.

Cayucos: This Saturday from 10am to 2 in the afternoon is Art In the Garden at the Cass Inn & Restaurant in Cayucos. The address is 222 N. Ocean Avenue – one block from the Pier. Art In The Garden features the local bluegrass band the Cuesta are activities for kids, food available for purchase and wine & beer vendors. Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for kids. SLO: This Saturday the San Luis Obispo Youth Symphony performs in conjunction with the Pacific Dance troupe in an all-youth staging of “Sleeping Beauty.” The performance is Saturday at 7 pm at the Performing Arts Center on the Cal Poly Campus. Over 100 children are involved in the play, with the symphony and fairies and dragons and special effects. Atascadero:  On Sunday in Atascadero at the B-W Gallery there’s an artist’s reception for one of our community’s finest photographers, Joe Schwartz.  The informal reception is from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. at the B-W Gallery, celebrating the extraordinary work of fine art photographer Joe Schwartz whose images include scenes of New York in the 1930s and 40s, and Los Angeles in the 1950s and 60s. Schwartz is an inspiring social activist and artistic icon whose work reflects street photography and gives a lively sense of American culture through the decades. Joe Schwartz work is on exhibit along with other artists at the Gallery through August 17th – with the show “12 photographers in 12 weeks.”  Joe Schwartz will discuss his work and photographic techniques.  For more info:  www.b-wgallery.com. SLO:  Next week in San Luis Obispo it’s the Introduction Night for SLO School of Law on Thursday June 26th at 6:00 PM. The evening is open to the public and provides an opportunity for those that are interested in the school or obtaining a law degree to come learn more and ask questions. All attendees will have the opportunity to meet Judge Charles Porter, the founder and head instructor of the school. The event is held in the school’s regular classroom at the former Pacheco Elementary School at 165 Grand Avenue. S. Maria: One week from today the Non-Profit Support Center hosts a Media Panel Discussion in Santa Maria. If you would like to learn how to generate free publicity by writing an effective news release that will receive media coverage, this is the seminar for you. Participants will learn: How to format a press release, tips on writing for the media –learn common errors and how to avoid them and how to have a strong message along with an angle that will make your announcement unique and stand apart. Following the lecture, attendees will have the rare opportunity to speak directly with a panel of local media professionals. The presentation takes place in Santa Maria at the Veteran’s Memorial Community Center, 313 W. Tunnell Street on Friday June 27th from 9am to 12 noon.
