Paso Robles: Everyone is invited to stop by the Paso Robles City Library to view a
lively quilt produced by local youngsters. Inspired by the “story quilting” of children’s author and illustrator Faith Ringold and using recycled materials, Upcycle SLO sponsored a quilting activity for children at the 2010 Paso Robles Festival of the Arts held last May. Upcycle SLO is a creative collective whose aim is to create items using mostly repurposed materials while encouraging the ideals of green consumer behavior and supporting local artists, nonprofits and the community at large. The quilt is currently on display at the Paso Robles City Library, open Monday-Friday, 10:00am-8:00pm, and Saturdays, 10:00am-

SLO: The City of San Luis Obispo offers a series of classes to assist families in becoming a Foster Family or in going through the Adoption process. The next Foster Care and Adoption Informational Outreach Session is Tuesday, Sept 7th at the Department of Social Services located at            3433 South Higuera Room 115. Los Olivos: Acting classes are offered in Los Olivos on Wednesdays beginning September 15th. Peter Frisch, best known on the Central Coast as Executive Director of The Granada Theater for the past eight years, returns to the studio and the classroom this fall with acting classes designed for the serious, adult student. "Scene Work and Exploration" begins at 6:30 Wednesday evening, September 15th and runs twelve Wednesday evenings in Los Olivos. Using scenes from film and theatre, participants learn to expand their vocal, physical or emotional resources, to develop a personal process and technique, and explore risk-taking and innovative choices as an actor. Solvang: The music series Tales from the Tavern is presents a very special evening with Joan Baez Under the Stars at the Solvang Festival Theater, September 30th at 7:30 PM.
Tales from the Tavern features acoustic singer-songwriters for a spring and fall season each year, offering audiences a chance to be up-close and personal with each performer in an intimate setting. To accommodate Joan Baez fans, the Solvang Festival Theater offers a magical end-of-summer setting to hear one of the folk music scene’s most enduring performers. SLO: Tomorrow in San Luis Obispo there is a workshop at 6 pm on the City of San Luis Obispo’s Historic Preservation Ordinance and Guideline. It’s a community workshop to discuss proposed updates to the Historic Preservation Guidelines and draft Historic Preservation Ordinance for the City of San Luis Obispo. This Thursday from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Ludwick Community Center, located at 864 Santa Rosa Street (on the corner of Mill), you’ll have an opportunity to discuss how proposed changes may impact historic structures and development in historic districts; provide input to City staff; and learn about next steps in the public process. Here are some opportunities to hear some diverse music in San Luis Obispo County this week:
Grover Beach: Tonight there is a benefit/memorial concert for musician Kenny Edwards in Grover Beach at Fin’s. Kenny Edwards is well known for h is contributions to Americana music as an original member of the Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt, a member of the band Bryndle and the side man for Karla Bonoff. His musical talents grace hundreds of recording projects since the early 1970s. Kenny passed away last Wednesday and this concert was scheduled to help with financial support for his medical care, now the concert will donate a fund in Kenny’s name to the non-profit “MusicCares” – a co-operative that assists and helps to support musicians in need as Kenny was. The music begins at 6 pm with musicians from Santa Barbara and SLO County contributing a few songs each, at Fin’s on the beach at the end of Grand Avenue. Pismo Beach: This Sunday there are three bands playing at the "America's Music" concert-dance in the Veteran's Memorial Building, 780 Bello Street. Show time is 11am-4:30pm, featuring the Blue Street Jazz Band (1pm and 3:15pm), the Mud Skippers (2:15pm) and the BSR Jammers (11am). $5-$10. Paso Robles: For fans of fingerstyle guitar, this Friday at Matt’s Music in Paso Robles Tim and Myles Thompson, a father-son duo perform.  Tim earned the prestigious Fingerstyle Magazine's International Championship in 2008, is considered a guitar virtuoso, is a talented singer/songwriter, and he's a much sought after independent producer and session player. SLO: This Saturday you can enjoy Cabaret music from Delilah at the Steynberg Gallery beginning at 8 pm. Paris comes to SLO Town at the Steynberg Gallery on Saturday, with songs of Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Kurt Weill, Stephen Sondheim and more. Delilah brings passion, heart and laughter to the intimate setting of the Steynberg. Joining her will be John Cribb on piano and Wayne Gamble on mandolin, guitar, bass. SLO: Tomorrow, Thursday there is an in-store performance by the group “The Shants” at Boo Boo Records on Monterey Street at 5:30. The music is Southern folk and Country with the Shants' slow-burning sound originating from the rural backgrounds of its members: from South Louisiana delta pines, to the brusk plains of Minnesota, and the rolling hills of  California where The Shants now call Oakland, California home. No Depression magazine describes them this way: “…Rustic and subdued, like the scant, heavily muted light that finds its way to the floor of a redwood grove”  and another writer calls them: “Slow burning americana - and I really can’t think of a more apt description than that. Very moody, very lo-fi, very mellow. Some great steel guitar throughout. You can hear them tomorrow at 5:30 at Boo Boo Records on Monterey Street in San Luis Obispo. S. Barbara: This Saturday in Santa Barbara from 3 to 5 pm, the Santa Barbara Strings orchestra program holds auditions for its 2010-2011 season, for those musicians aged 7 to 16. Through two orchestras, Sinfonietta and Intermezzo, Conductor Mary Beth Woodruff provides classical excellence in music education and technical training to string players from ages 7 to 16 years old by working progressively through music history from the Renaissance/Baroque Periods through the Modern Period. Sinfonietta and Intermezzo rehearse on Saturday afternoons throughout the school year beginning on Saturday, September 11th. The orchestras performs two concerts this season. Auditions are held at the Monte Vista School at 730 North Hope Avenue in Santa Barbara. To schedule an audition between 3 & 5 pm on August 28th please call Katie at #714-474-3691.
