Featuring the work of Guy Kinnear

6pm - 9pm

Artist Guy Kinnear will be joining us for a reception of his work here at Steynberg Gallery. Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be available.

Artist Statement:

In my artwork I am exploring contemporary experience in the light of history, in the
paradoxical space between the transcendent and the mundane. The hope is to find
moments where the infinite bonds with the common in the midst of uncertain
circumstances and so that they all might expand, disorient, and illuminate each other.
The works begin in conversations with members of my local community. These lead to
an event where the model is able to embody their most influential stories. The elements
of portraiture and storytelling are then woven with classical media techniques to
produce a personal, contemporary re-imaging of age-old narratives
In my recent drawings, the figures are developed from bone, to muscle, to skin, to
multiple possibilities of clothing & props through a set of successive layers of mixed
media drawings on translucent material. With each layer I consider the possibilities of
how a character’s history would affect physiology, and gesture. In process I explore the
possibilities of new applications of old narratives by re-editing or combining previously
disassociated narratives. After a substantial pile of drawings on a single theme has
been created, I separate them out, alter, and re-combine them to form multiple new
compositions from a single line of experimentation.

    Coalesce Bookstore invites you a book-signing, June 2, (Saturday), 2-4 p.m.
“Earth Wisdom:  A California Chumash Woman”by Pilulaw Khus and Yolanda Broyles-González

About the author and book:
Pilulaw Khus has devoted her life to tribal, environmental, and human rights issues. With impressive candor and detail, she recounts those struggles here, offering a Native woman's perspective on California history and the production of knowledge about indigenous peoples. Readers interested in tribal history will find in her story a spiritual counterpoint to prevailing academic views on the complicated reemergence of a Chumash identity. Readers interested in environmental studies will find vital eyewitness accounts of movements to safeguard important sites like Painted Rock and San Simeon Point from developers. Readers interested in indigenous storytelling will find Chumash origin tales and oral history as recounted by a gifted storyteller.

The 1978 Point Conception Occupation was a turning point in Pilulaw Khus's life. In that year excavation began for a new natural gas facility at Point Conception, near Santa Barbara, California. To the Chumash tribal people of the central California coast, this was desecration of sacred land. In the Chumash cosmology, it was the site of the Western Gate, a passageway for spirits to enter the next world. Frustrated by unfavorable court hearings, the Chumash and their allies mobilized a year-long occupation of the disputed site, eventually forcing the energy company to abandon its plan. The Point Conception Occupation was a landmark event in the cultural revitalization of the Chumash people and a turning point in the life of Pilulaw Khus, the Chumash activist and medicine woman whose firsthand narrations comprise this volume.

Scholar Yolanda Broyles-González provides an extensive introductory analysis of Khus's narrative. Her analysis explores "re-Indianization" and highlights the newly emergent Chumash research of the last decade.

In the world of book publishing, this volume from a traditional Chumash woman elder is a first. It puts a 20th (and 21st) century face, name, identity, humanity, personality, and living voice on the term Chumash.

The UC Santa Barbara Department of Theater and Dance presents ANOWA, an African play by Ama Ata Aidoo.  Set in a village in Ghana, West Africa, in the year 1870, the play tells the story of Anowa, an independent-minded young woman who rejects the suitors her parents suggest and marries a trader for love. Anowa ultimately becomes an unwilling collaborator in the African slave trade, which drives her to a tragic end. Framed by proverbs and village gossip, Anowa draws on the richness of African oral tradition while spinning a tale with universal appeal.

Ama Ata Aidoo will deliver the keynote address during a conference held in her honor May 24-26 on the UCSB campus.  For more conference information:  http://www.ihc.ucsb.edu/aidooconference-2/

Variable Velocity Performance Group presents:

“InsideOut”

A brand new Contemporary Dance Concert for 2012.

Monday, June 4th - Peter Case @ Steynberg Gallery

8pm - $15

Grammy nominated artist Peter Case (formerly of The Plimsouls) will be joining us for an evening of fantastic music.

When asked whether he is a folksinger, punk rocker, or what?  Peter Case describes himself:

"I tell people now I play folk-rock, & they seem to understand ...but the whole truth is more complex: I'm a singer/ songwriter that uses all the American styles to get my stories across : Blues. RocknRoll. Country. Soul. R&B ...& Folk..plus some rhythmic influences from around the world. I'm trying to forge my own style out of those inherited materials...I've always been into dynamic emotionally charged music you could use to tell a story or paint a picture.
So in other words, yes.
"

He's writing songs for a new Vanguard album, due out early next year; releasing the acoustic album recorded last summer in San Francisco with David Perales; It will be available only at his website (www.petercase.com) and at gigs, & is entitled "Thank You Saint Jude". He is producing "Avalon Blues: a tribute to Mississippi John Hurt", for Vanguard, for release in June 2001. It features Case himself, as well as Dave Alvin ,Taj Mahal, Lucinda Williams, Beck, Gillian Welch & many other artists performing Hurt's songs. Lately he's been leading "Songwriters Sliderule": a weekly series of songwriting workshops at McCabes Guitar Studio in Santa Monica; and will be performing in Los Angeles & on the road through out the year, putting together a new band; & writing a book about music.

Jason Harnell is one of the most sought after jazz drummers/educators/composers on the West Coast today and a mainstay on the Los Angeles jazz scene for over twenty years. His unmistakable sound and style, as well as his boundless imagination and pure love of the instrument, make him a driving force on the creative music scene. Coming from a musical family (his father is Grammy award winning pianist/composer Joe Harnell), Jason was practically born with drum sticks in his hands. He started playing drums at age six when close family friend and jazz drumming icon, Louie Bellson gave him his first real set of drums. Jason started playing professionally at the ripe old age of age eleven and was teaching at a local Florida music store by age fifteen. Through the years, Jason has has studied with drumming greats Shelly Manne, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jeff Hamilton and Joe LaBarbera and at age twenty two, was asked to join legendary trumpeter, Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Noveau Band. Today, Jason plays, tours and records with many of the world's top jazz musicians including Bob Sheppard, Larry Goldings, Kate McGarry, Kei Akagi and Larry Koonse. He also plays regularly in several critically acclaimed, L.A. based original jazz projects including the bass-less trio "JoE-LeSs ShOe" (www.joelessshoe.com) and the Los Angeles Jazz Collective (www.lajazzcollective.com). Jason has been featured in Modern Drummer magazine, Jazziz magazine and Downbeat and can be heard/seen in the current Clint Eastwood film, "J.Edgar", the Judd Apatow film, "Funny People" and on several the television shows including "Married with Children" and "Beverly Hills 90210". Jason is also one of the most in demand educators in his field and is on faculty as Professor of Jazz Drum Studies at University California Irvine, World Mission University and the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. Jason endorses and plays Yamaha drums, Istanbul cymbals, Remo drumheads and Vic Firth drumsticks. To learn more, please visit www.jasonharnell. com.

The Tapestry of Spirit by Erik Paul Rocklin

About the author and book:
An enchanting, allegorical tale with insights of enduring relevance, The Tapestry of Spirit presents an artfully layered story of an orphan boy following a dream -- a dream of a meeting in the East with a mystical figure known as the Mage. A seemingly coincidental encounter the day after the dream introduces the boy to an old man, summoned by the power of the boy’s dream, to serve as his guide and protector during the journey. Along the way, some of the boy’s encounters include a wise, elderly Sage, a blind Seer, a captive boy Monk, a grieving Mother, and a dying Father, and with these encounters the boy learns of the power of dreams, the value of trust and belief, the vision of the heart, and the capacity of every individual to help in the healing of theWorld. As the boy journeys to seek the Mage, he comes to understand that in doing so, he also seeks his Destiny Thread, and ultimately, how it returns to the universal wisdom that is The Tapestry of Spirit.
AUTHOR BIO:
Erik Paul Rocklin was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1966. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University, and after a successful corporate career, turned to his life-long interest of writing.  He currently splits his time between the coasts of California and the deserts of Arizona, finding inspiration in the simple things in life.

ANIMALS IN NEED FUND

Art for Animals
A Benefit for Animals in Need Fund Saturday, June 9, 2012
5-9pm
Edwards Barn in Nipomo

There aren’t many things in life as heart wrenching as an injured, unkempt, and unwanted animal. Nipomo, CA: Animals in Need Fund will host its first annual Art for Animals, Saturday, June 9th, 5-9pm at the Edwards Barn in Nipomo.

The evening will include cocktail hour, a barbeque, live music, and a silent and live auction. Numerous central coast artists will be donating beautiful pieces of art for the auctions. Participating artist include Ben Trogdon, and other wonderfully talented individuals. In addition to art, auction items will also include spa packages, wine, and a guitar from Five Cities Music and Sound.

Tickets for the evening are $40 and can be purchased at Nipomo Dog & Cat Hospital. Please visit our website www.ainfund.org for more ticket and event information.

Founded in 2008, the mission of Animals in Need Fund is to provide shelter and veterinary care to dogs and cats who come to us with no owner, or attempt to reunite the pet with its owner, or to place the pet in a caring adoptive home. Since that time, Animals in Need Fund has provided medical care, spay/ neutering, microchip placement, housing and feeding of ownerless dogs and cats in the Nipomo area. Animals in Need Fund has rescued, treated and placed in loving permanent homes dogs and cats who may otherwise have lived a life on the streets continuing to produce more unwanted dogs and cats, or hit by a car, or worse yet, starved to death. One of our favorite stories is Denzel a beautiful and playful black lab. Denzel, was brought to us by Animal Services who suspected he had been hit by a car. He could barely walk and had generalized tremors that came and went. Treatment began and further testing revealed Denzel has a rare genetic condition that causes muscle weakness when cold or stressed. For the next six months Denzel was cared for and nursed back to health by the Animals In Need Fund and the Nipomo Dog & Cat Hospital. Today, Denzel lives with a wonderful family who live down the street from the veterinary clinic that treated him and can be seen regularly on walks with his new mom and dad. His extensive treatment, care, and housing until he was adopted were made possible by Animals in Need Fund.

All monies raised by and donated to Animals in Need Fund go directly to helping homeless dogs and cats in need of care until they are adopted.

Animals in Need Fund, a nonprofit that provides care for the stray dogs and cats of Nipomo, will host its first annual Art for Animals, Saturday, June 9th, 5-9pm at the Edwards Barn in Nipomo.

Gilles Apap seems incapable of playing a single note in a way that isn' fascinating.
American Record Guide, 2001

It all began in 1994, when somebody gave Gilles Apap a little yellow tape which was simply titled "Music from Moldavia and Bessarabia" featuring traditional Gypsy tunes performed by some anonymous Gypsy musicians.  This little non-professionnal recording – later on always fondly referred  to as “The Yellow Tape” – should become the starting shot of a particular musical cooperation and friendship soon known as “The Transylvanian Mountainboys” and led to several recordings and numerous concerts in Europe and the U S

    Contact: Peter   547.0278   sgallery@charter.net
Ranchers for Peace are Charles & Ray Duncan, a father/daughter duo from the Central Coast of California who traffic in a fresh style of acoustic folk-rock they’ve dubbed “neo-hippie protest music.” Featuring thoughtful songwriting and heartfelt harmonies over jangly guitar/harmonica/melodica arrangements, they embody the kind of change-the-world attitude that might have been blowing in the wind during the summer of love.  Performing steadily since the fall of 2011, the Ranchers are currently finalizing their first batch of recordings -- a seven-song EP, “Tell All The World” -- for release this week, with a concert at the Steynberg Gallery, 1531 Monterey St, San Luis Obispo, Sat., June 9, 8:00.  A busy summer, including scheduled appearances in several states, will kick off with a set at this month’s Live Oak Festival in Santa Barbara County. Meanwhile, their March release (as a free download) of “Walking Around Black” -- their response to the Trayvon Martin killing in Florida -- was recently selected by the editors of the venerable Sing Out! Magazine to be featured in their upcoming issue and its companion compilation CD.   A second EP is planned for fall, followed by a trip to the UK and Ireland: an energetic conclusion to their Year One which will find the Ranchers happily out where they belong, riding the range of possibilities and doing what they can to help make giving a damn cool again.

Coalesce Bookstore presents in cocnert June 10 (Sunday):  Inner Faces
Showtime:  1-3 p.m., Tickets:  $10

Drawing on influences from jazz, rock, classical, and bluegrass, Inner Faces has been performing their unique brand of string music on the Central Coast for over 20 years.  The trio writes its own music and has created a distinctive sound that’s difficult to categorize.  This has resulted in the production of two original CDs entitled “Beneath the Surface” and “Best Laid Plans”.

Inner Faces has been featured twice at the Live Oak Music Festival, The Mozart Festival (now Festival Mosaic), and at numerous other concert venues in California.  The ensemble has also performed on several live radio programs, including public radio.   Instrumentation of the group includes acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, and string bass.

Recently, Inner Faces has been incorporating more acoustic music into their sets and are planning to record a third CD of new material.

Guitarist Bruce Corelitz is a graduate of the Guitar Institute of Technology and a veteran of rock, blues and jazz bands on the Central Coast.  His unconventional approach to guitar and composition grows out of a rich background of diverse musical interests.

Mandolinist Tom Walters has performed with numerous ensembles ranging from bluegrass to swing to Afro-Cuban.  He has recorded as a side-man on several CD projects and composes much of the trio's music with guitarist Corelitz.

Bassist Ken Hustad is a well known performer and recording artist on the Central Coast and beyond. He is a member of the San Luis Obispo Symphony and the Festival Mosaic Orchestra.  In addition to playing with the some of the most prominent jazz groups in the area, Ken teaches bass and cello privately and at Cuesta Community College.

Paintings by internationally known cartoonist and emerging oil painter, Jerry Scott.

“My concentration has been on painting animals, landscapes and people
around me, as I explore the patterns, values and color relationships.
The brushwork has moved from a loose style to a very controlled one
and has arrived at a compromise between the two in the most recent of
these canvases. I enjoy painting many types of subjects, but I’m most
comfortable when there’s humor involved in the composition. Maybe that’s
not a surprise, given my day job as a cartoonist, but it’s not something I
expected. Painting was originally an opportunity to get away from the
daily grind of comic strips, but I’ve found myself looking for the funny
in my art, as well. Maybe I’m just wired that way. For these paintings
I’ve either chosen images, shapes and light that I find interesting, or
things that just make me smile. Sometimes both. I hope you enjoy them. ”
Jerry Scott

As co-creator of Baby Blues and Zits, Jerry Scott is one of just four
comic strip cartoonists in history to have two daily comics strips
running in more than 1,000 newspapers each.
The strips reach over 50 million readers daily in 45 countries and 14 languages.
He has been the recipient of numerous cartooning awards
including the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award,
Best Comic Strip of the Year Award (three times),
the Adamson Statuette (Sweden’s highest comic honor)
and Germany’s Max and Moritz Award
 for Best International Comic Strip.

Meet at the north end of 15th Street off Santa Ysabel in Los Osos.  Wear comfortable shoes, long sleeves and pants to avoid poison oak and mosquitoes.  Please park carefully, avoiding driveways and mailboxes, and leave pets at home.  The easy paced walks last 1-1/2 to 2 hours.  For more information call (805) 528-0392.

Learn about our famed, local pioneers, the Hollister Family, in their historic journeys over two centuries and two continents, finally settling on our own Gaviota Coast.  SB Genealogical Society Monthly Meeting, Saturday June 16, 2012.

The Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society holds its monthly general meeting on Saturday June 16, at the First Presbyterian Church, 21 E. Constance at State Street, 9:30 am to 12:00 pm.  Special interest Groups meet at 9:30am for Beginning Genealogy, German Ancestry, Italian Ancestry, Computer Genealogy and 9:00am for JewishGen.  Meeting and program starts at 10:30am.

This month’s presentation, "West With the Hollisters" features J J Hollister and his stepdaughter Sara Pelton, offering a slide presentation about the settling of the Gaviota Coast by the Hollisters and discusses how they came to be there.

The presentation will trace the path of Colonel William Welles Hollister's ancestors from Gloucestershire, England in approx. 1636 to the Connecticut Colony and then follows them to the Northwest Territories in the early 1800s as they take advantage of land granted to officers of the Revolutionary War.  The story includes three wagon train treks to California by William Welles and a few of his siblings. The first trek was in1852 to ascertain the possibilities; the second in 1853, with sister and brother, to bring the first round of sheep and the third in 1856 by WW's brother, Joseph Hubbard Hollister, and partners to bring even more sheep to California.

This is also a “Member Share” meeting so consider bringing your family history treasures -- books, favorite heirlooms, photos, and other items.

Come join us. You do not need to be a member to enjoy this wonderful presentation.

A calendar of genealogical events can be found at the Society web site (http://sbgen.org/events.php).

    Contact: Gary J Steinmann   (805) 305-0569   movetoamendslo1@gmail.com
You can help change the course of history!  Move To Amend is a national organization dedicated to reversing the Supreme Court's "Citizens United" decision that declared that money is the equivalent of free speech and therefore corporate "persons" were entitled to pump untold billions of dollars into our political campaigns, effectively drowning out the voices of the people.  The goal is to Amend the Constitution to reaffirm that the protections of the Bill of Rights pertain only to human beings, not corporations, and that money is not the same as free speech.  Political contributions can and must be regulated to ensure that the people's voices are heard.  Corporate power and money now influence every issue and cause that we are concerned with and fight for.  Solving this problem will affect many other issues.

Our local MTA Affiliate group, Move To Amend of SLO County, is working to get this resolution passed by our local governments, organizations and institutions.  If the people will lead, the leaders WILL follow!  Our Core Committee meets on the first and third Mondays of each month to organize our strategy and plan events to educate the community about this important issue.  Our next meetings will be March 5th and March 19th.  Plan to attend and learn what you can do to abolish corporate rule and restore democracy to our country.  Please visit movetoamend.org for more information, including a link to our local group.

Paso Robles, CA – A fundraiser to benefit the 2012 Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles will feature a classical outdoor concert, sparkling wine and gourmet picnic fare, followed by a silent auction of vineyard-themed paintings by local artists on Sunday, June 24th at Cass Winery.

Works by Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms will be the focus of the vineyard performance by pianist and composer Marek Zebrowski and the Upstream Ensemble with Joel Pargman, violin; Thomas Lea, viola; Simone Vitucci, cello; and Maggie Hasspacher, double bass.  A special stage has been set at the base of Cass vineyard’s premium Cabernet Sauvignon block, creating a bucolic setting for an outdoor concert near the tasting room.

Following the concert, a gourmet picnic spread accompanied by sparkling wine will be laid out by Chefs Jacob Lovejoy, Charles Paladin Wayne and Brandon McPartlan.

In addition, some of the area’s fine artists will have vineyard and winery-themed original art available for silent auction.  Artists include William Grove, Anne Laddon, Hellie Blythe among others.

Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased online at www.padereskifest.com or by calling the winery at 805-239-0873.

Proceeds from the June 24th event will benefit the 2012 Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles, a non-profit organization that sponsors an annual series of concerts featuring internationally acclaimed artists, the Paderewski Festival Youth Piano Competition and Youth Exchange Program, and other Paderewski-themed events.

The 2012 Festival, to be held November 8-11, will mark the 21st anniversary of the Festival in Paso Robles. The Festival Gala concert will feature Paderewski’s rarely performed Sonata for Violin and Piano. Other concerts will include the Youth Piano Competition Winners’ Recital and performances by young Polish pianists visiting for the Festival Youth Exchange. Tours of the area and lectures by experts are also planned. In addition, a specially commissioned monument of Paderewski will be unveiled next to the Carnegie Library in Paso Robles’ Downtown City Park.  For more information about the Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles, visit the website www.paderewskifest.com.

Today’s fast-paced, technological world is in desperate need of good communicators and leaders.  The person with strong communication skills has a clear advantage over tongue-tied colleagues—especially in a competitive job market.  Most people would rather die than give a speech.  According to a survey reported in The Book of Lists, fear of public speaking outranked the fear of death by a two-to-one margin! Toastmasters is the most efficient, enjoyable and affordable way of gaining great communication skills.

The SLO Noontime Toastmasters Club has been helping members to build self-confidence and communication and leadership skills since 1983. The group currently has 24 members and meets every Tuesday from Noon until 1:00 p.m. Starting January 3, 2012, the club will be moving its meeting location.  Meetings will now be held in the conference room of the Central Coast Water Control Board at 895 Aerovista Place, Suite 101, San Luis Obispo, California.  Guests are always welcome and are not required to speak but will have the opportunity to do so if they wish.  More information can be found at:  ttp://slonoontime.toastmastersclubs.org/

June is “National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month”
Woods Humane Society Launches Meet Your Match® Feline-ality™

Adoption Program Helps Orphaned Cats Find Homes

— Pilot program has seen results of up to 40 percent increase in adoptions; up to 46 percent decrease in euthanasia of adult cats at beta-test facilities — Woods Humane Society encourages you to “Adopt and make it for Life”! June is National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month and Woods Humane Society is celebrating our 57th Anniversary by reducing the adoption fee for all felines (Cats & Kits) and asking adopters to “NAME YOUR OWN PRICE” for the entire month!
Imagine the heart-warming sight of a cat going home with a family that perfectly matches his adventurous personality … a confident, loving tabby cat being hand-picked by a retired couple looking for companionship … or an energetic tuxedo cat going home with the newlywed couple who will provide a lifelong home.
Increasing the likelihood that adopted WHS cats will be a good match with their new families is the underlying goal of the Meet Your Match Feline-alityAdoption Program, a program of the ASPCA®.
Woods Humane Society announced today it is implementing the Feline-ality program, further increasing the potential for successful, permanent placements for the agency’s adopted cats. The program — which includes a Feline-ality behavior assessment of each cat and a brief survey of each adopter — results in a color-coded matchmaking system that brings compatible companions together. The result is a reduction in the number of adopted cats returned to agency because they aren’t a good fit.
“The goal for every adoption is to find a loving home for our cats,” says Steve Kragenbrink, WHS Community Programs Director. “The Feline-ality program helps us do that. It helps our adoption counselors match the expectations and lifestyles of the adopters with the behaviors and feline-alities of the cats.”
Feline-ality identifies distinct “feline-alities” for cats, and matches them with potential adopters whose personality and lifestyle fit them best. “The key to developing successful adoptions lies in making good matches between adopters and pets, thus creating lasting bonds,” said Dr. Emily Weiss, the ASPCA’s senior director of agency behavior programs, and developer of the Meet Your Match programs. “Feline-ality is a tool that does precisely this; and everyone—adopters, agency staff, and most of all, the cats—benefits from the program.”
Feline-ality uses detailed research-based surveys and behavior assessments, both for cats and potential adopters, to make the best matches possible between the two. The cat assessment reliably predicts, based on its Feline-ality, how an individual cat is likely to behave in its new home. An adopter’s survey identifies the characteristics of the adopter’s preferences and lifestyle that correlate with specific feline-alities. Adopters can then look for the cats with the specific feline-alities they feel would be a good fit for their household and identify them by colors and sub-categories.
For example, a cat with a green color-coded description would be a “Party Animal”, “MVP” or “Leader of the Band.” Green cats are savvy, unflappable and adventurous. A cat with an orange classification makes a great companion kitty, and would be called a “Sidekick,” “Executive” or “Personal Assistant.” A cat with a purple classification is one that seeks affection, is quiet and stays out of trouble. It could be called a “Secret Admirer,” “Love Bug” or “Private Investigator.”
Woods Humane Society prides itself on being a premier animal care facility and every adoptable feline is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped prior to going home.
If you are looking to bring a loving new companion feline into your life, please consider stopping by Woods Humane Society and spend some time getting to know all of the truly wonderful adult cats who are desperately seeking a home to call their own!

Founded in 1955, Woods Humane Society has proudly served the homeless animals of San Luis Obispo County for 57 years. Woods Humane Society is an animal sheltering and welfare organization based in San Luis Obispo that annually places over 1,100 dogs and cats into loving homes.
WHS’ adoption center is located at 875 Oklahoma Avenue in San Luis Obispo. Call us at 805-543-9316 or visit www.woodshumane.org to donate or learn more.

Santa Barbara Amtrak station, at about 10:15 a.m., to take on passengers
for an exciting roundtrip adventure along the beautiful Central Coast to San Luis Obispo.

Points of interest along the route include the breathtaking Gaviota Coast, the legendary surfing beaches of the Hollister and Bixby ranches, Point Conception, the massive launch sites of Vandenberg AFB, Edna Valley vineyards, state and county beach parks, a wide variety of wildlife and a lot more.

The June 30 CCF trip is open to the general public. Advance reservations
are required. Seats are $69. Discounted fares are available by booking

Additional CCF day-trips are now being organized by the museum. At least
one trip every month is planned, including excursions on July 21 and
August 18.

CCF cars can also be chartered through the museum by organizations and businesses. Southern California Edison and local Univ. of Southern Calif. alumni group are among those that have already reserved cars for summer 2012 CCF trips.

Museum guides will travel aboard all CCF trips, to answer passenger
questions and provide light, informative commentary about the route and
its features.

Many CCF excursions will also feature entertainment, such as railroad music by acoustic guitarist, Rick Reeves. A gourmet cheese-tasting trip is also being planned for later in 2012.

Each CCF trip will feature two classic railcars. The flagship of the CCF
fleet is Overland Trail, which will be a part of every CCF trips. Owned
by Bill and Debbie Hatrick of Santa Ana, Overland Trail is a 39-seat
Pullman club lounge.

On the June 30 trip, Overland Trail will be accompanied by the historic
Colonial Crafts, which served on the Pennsylvania Railroad and features
three bedrooms, a buffet, drawing room, and lounge. The Aug. 18 trip
will include Silver Splendor, a classic Vista Dome car, famous for their
spectacular, *360 degree panoramic views.

Expected to join the CCF fleet later this year are Amber Trail, a
Southern Pacific Railroad coach car, and Acoma, the very first lounge
car to serve on the Santa Fe Super Chief, called “The Train of the
Stars” because of the many celebrities who traveled on this
Chicago-to-Los Angeles streamliner.

Many of the CCF cars are provided by LARail – a Southern California
consortium of private railcar owner-operators.

Passengers will also be able to board the CCF railcars at the Goleta
Amtrak stop, as well as in Santa Barbara. Website: Goletadepot.org

CITY OF GUADALUPE TO HOST A CELEBRATON OF MILITARY HEROES – THE FIRST OF ITS KIND ON THE CENTRAL COAST

First Annual “Celebrate Heroes” Parade, Concert and Barbecue on June 30

“Gold” and “Blue” Star Families from Throughout California Sought to Participate

Guadalupe, CA— When Guadalupe resident Veronica Forest saw a need for more Central Coast recognition of active and veteran members of the military, she took action. Indeed, since posing ideas to her community, Forest has seen the City of Guadalupe and the Guadalupe Cultural Arts and Education Center take up the cause. Together they have developed the first annual Celebrate Heroes Parade, Concert and Barbecue happening in downtown Guadalupe on June 30 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A longtime Southern Californian, Forest says that when she moved to the tiny town of Guadalupe in Santa Barbara County three years ago, she was surprised that the Central Coast didn’t seem to have much in the way of celebrations (as opposed to memorials) honoring military personnel. “If you don’t have a family member in the war, you are disassociated with it,” said Forest, director of the Celebrate Heroes committee. “We want to forge a bridge between the general public and the military families past and present who have sacrificed so much.”

Reaching out to both military and civilians from throughout the state, the event’s organizers anticipate more than 1,000 participants in the parade, which begins at 11 a.m. on Guadalupe Street (also called Highway 1 and Historic Highway 1), and will be led by grand marshal Col. Nina Armagno, Vandenberg Air Force Base’s 30thSpace Wing Commander, and will feature everything from Marine Humvees and bands to floats and convertibles carrying families of those lost in battle.

The parade route ends at Le Roy Park, where the 7,000 to 10,000 expected onlookers can enjoy a concert by The Rescue Crew, a 12-piece rock ‘n’ roll band that is part of the Air National Guard Band of the West Coast. Catered meals consisting of oven-fried chicken with beans and salad for $7 per plate will also be available as well as barbecued items for sale by the Central Coast Vietnam Veterans of America Post 982. Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab is bringing out its old-fashioned ice cream truck to offer free dessert to active duty soldiers and their families who participate in the parade.

Forest said that the day will be especially focused on “Gold Star Mothers and Families,” those who have lost a family member in active duty during any wars, past or present. “Our goal is to recognize these families in a way that would make their loved ones proud,” she said. “We want to celebrate rather than mourn the lives that they led and the work that they did.” Forest adds that representatives from Gold Star and Blue Star (those with family actively serving in the military) families will be invited to walk or ride in the parade, and they are seeking more participants from throughout the state.

“The City of Guadalupe has always been supportive of both our active and retired military,” said Guadalupe Mayor Lupe Alvarez. “For us, the Celebrate Heroes Parade is just our way of acknowledging and thanking our active men in woman in the military.”

Adds Forest, “The parade’s theme is ‘Stars and Stripes Forever.’ This is a great way to thank the people helping us to maintain just that.”

Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus Expanding Programs and Opening Up to Younger Singers
    Contact: Rebecca Wrighton   805-512-9840   assistant@sbchildrenschorus.com
Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus Expanding Programs
and Opening Up to Younger Singers

Expanding the Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus (SBCC) base of programs this year has a few firsts for the 19 year-old organization which all starts on September 10 with weekly classes and will run through June, 2013.  SBCC firsts include a brand new program for children six and seven years old called Vocal Explorations, the launching of the Carpinteria Children’s Chorus, and an option to pay dues all at once or monthly.

With the popularity of the vocal competition shows on network TV like The Voice®, American Idol®, and the series Glee® not to mention director Danny Boyle’s epic Opening Ceremony show for the Summer Olympics where more than a dozen children’s choirs were integrated into the show, the vocal program at SBCC is a great place to get your youngster started. Countless professional and amateur singers have started their own career path in choruses and choirs. The disciplines children learn in the vocal arts also serve them in other aspects throughout their lives.  Last season SBCC collaborated with Opera Santa Barbara, a local opera company and a number of local a cappella groups, giving the Concert Chorus members valuable and memorable experiences.

Executive Director, Paul Freeman states, “This year, we want to increase the size and scope of the chorus activities so we’re bringing the program to the kids and opening up our offerings to younger children. Getting kids started earlier is integral to growing the Children’s Chorus.  We’re also aware of how busy parents are so having classes closer to home – whether in Santa Barbara or Carpinteria –will hopefully increase our accessibility and our membership.”

Returning for her second season, Choral Director Erin Bonski Evans will direct both the Santa Barbara program held at the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara at 1535 Santa Barbara Street (93101) and the new Carpinteria classes, which will be held at Curtis Studio of Dance, 4915 9th St., Carpinteria (93013).

Freeman, who grew up in Santa Barbara, is the driving force behind SBCC and is focused on providing the opportunities he had here growing up to the current generation of Santa Barbara kids.  This year he has envisioned having an All Schools Chorus that would be anchored by participating schools using the SBCC educational program combined with a fun “Glee Club” format.

Last year, community support for SBCC came from Santa Barbara Foundation’s Pillsbury Grant, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, The Dreier Family Rent Subsidy Fund, Gelson’s Market, Santa Barbara Community Arts Commission and Mrs. Lillian Lovelace.

Theresa F. Brown, Youth Activities and Adaptive Programs Supervisor at the City of Santa Barbara Parks & Recreation Department had high praise for the Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus program which designed “a new and innovative ‘special’ curriculum for the After School Opportunities for Kids, better known as A-OK!”¹ Brown said, “(This program) incorporated social skills, emphasized singing and performing and taught basic songs and rhythmic patterns. (Their) team led a three hour SING! workshop that included overcoming barriers which keep students from fully participating, six hours of active instruction through five different interactive CD’s, specific curricula details in a well-organized teacher training and instruction workbook, and additional help through their Yahoo User Group to assist staff.”

For information on how to sign your child up for the SBCC, contact Rebecca Wrighton by email: assistant@sbchildrenschorus.com or call (805) 512-9840
¹A-OK has been providing a coordinated after school program for 12 years to provide safe and effective research-based homework assistance and curricula to students during their unsupervised after school time.  Children are selected into the A-OK program based on low-test/reading scores, are English language learners and/or are in a situation where their family cannot provide a safe environment at home.  A-OK serves six Title 1 Santa Barbara Schools for children below the poverty level.  Students selected into A-OK are mandated to attend each day school is in session from after school to 6:00 pm.

Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus is a county-wide, non-denominational music education and performing organization for children ages 6-14. We provide children of the community with the opportunity for musical training and performing in a fun and challenging environment. Founded in 1993, SBCC will be here for years to come to serve your children. With the continuing decline in funding for school-based music programs, especially in the elementary and secondary school levels, SBCC is dedicated to filling a vital gap in bringing the benefits of music and vocal performance to children.

ABOUT the Santa Barbara Children’s Chorus Programs:

The Concert Chorus is the primary training and performing program for Children’s Chorus students. This program is open to all students, ages 8-14 years and is available in Santa Barbara and Carpinteria locations. Students entering this program are divided into levels based on experience, time in the chorus and other factors. Each level provides an increasing progression of music education and performance experience.  Skills assessments are performed annually to track student progress in theory, vocal ability, ear training and sight singing.  Classes run two hours long, one day per week.

Vocal Explorationsoffers chorus lessons for young singers interested in exploring singing individually and with a group.  This class is designed to provide a fun and educational environment for boys and girls who might want to continue on to singing in the Concert Chorus once they reach third grade.  The educational focus is on learning proper singing technique, breath control and basic ear training while still having fun singing songs they will be familiar with.  This class is 45 minutes long, once per week.

Concert Chorus Plus+ is vocal trainingdesigned to offer intermediate music theory, vocal and ear training as well as choral technique. Students who attend this program will receive one additional hour a week of group and individual vocal instruction with an emphasis on advanced techniques and singing skills.  This class includes participation in the Concert Chorus and is three hours in duration, once per week.
