The SBCC Center for Sustainability Presents:
Julis Piti
from the Chikukwa Ecological Land Use Community Trust
Zimbabwe, Africa
Sunday July 1, 6:30-9pm, 2012
Fe Bland Auditorium, Santa Barbara City College, West Campus
$10-$5 SBCC Students
P lease join the Santa Barbara City College Center for Sustainability on Sunday, July 1, as we host Julious Piti, founding member of the Chikukwa Ecological Land Use Community Trust (CELUCT) in Zimbabwe, whose ecological design work in Tanzania has recently been featured in the award winning film From the Mara Soil.
In the communal lands of Chimanimani on the borders of Zimbabwe and Mozambique---in the midst of civil wars, deforestation, drought, and severe land degradation---a wonderful story has been unfolding for the last twenty years, an example to the world.
Where once the people of the Chikukwa villages in this region suffered hunger, malnutrition and high rates of disease, communities have transformed themselves with permaculture land strategies and farming techniques, and along the way have become masters of conflict resolution.
Julious Piti experienced the violence of war first hand as a teenager fleeing Mozambique to Zimbabwe during times of conflict. These experiences led him with other Chikukwa community members to a lifetime of work committed to healing both the land and the people.
Many projects flourished through the years at Chikukwa, but the success of these projects also led to difficulties. Conflict and suspicion arose around many issues within the community, but when examined carefully, it was found most were based on communication breakdowns. From these difficulties, the creation of an extraordinary handbook called The Three Circles of Knowledge; How to Build Constructive Community Relations by Understanding Conflicts in Rural African Communities occurred. The approach of the book is based on the three circles method, which aims to work with the areas where indigenous, spiritual and analytical knowledge overlap. This method was developed by a core Chikukwa community group and utilized deep indigenous understanding.
There is much for the world to learn from Chikukwa and CELUCT, for not only have they managed to stay food secure and peaceful during the conflict ridden years of Zimbabwe, but they have done this with solutions that came from within the community, not imposed from the outside, and with very little help or funding from international aid agencies or NGOs.
Some 20 years ago, most were trying to survive on cash crops that caused deforestation and erosion, now over 80% of the population of the Chikukwa villages practice permaculture, growing food for themselves with a surplus to share, on lush and abundant mountainsides where springs honored by indigenous beliefs, have once again sprung to life.
Julious Piti is a permaculture teacher, designer and trainer, and conflict facilitator. He is a founding member of the Chikukwa Ecological Land Trust (CELUCT) and the Director of PORET, an organization formed to support farmers in the low rainfall area of Chaseyama, Zimbabwe where he now lives, by replicating the strategies of CELUCT. In 2009 Julious was hired by Global Resource Alliance, an NGO based in Ojai CA, to facilitate a permaculture design project for a village of 5000 on the shores of Lake Victoria, Tanzania, featured in the film, From the Mara Soil. Film producer Gillian Leahy and Terry Leahy, author of Permaculture Strategy for the South African Villages (University of Newcastle, Australia), are currently making a documentary film about Chikukwa. A presenter at the International Permaculture Convergences in Brazil, Africa, and Jordan, Julious Piti has been invited to teach at the upcoming Permaculture Design Course for International Development & Social Entrepreneurship at Quail Springs Learning Oasis and Permaculture Farm in California, July 2012.
The evening talk takes place on Sunday, July 1, 6:30pm-9pm, 2012, at the Fe Bland Auditorium, Santa Barbara City College West Campus, 721 Cliff Drive, Santa Barbara, CA, 93109. $10 general/$5 SBCC students. Art at the JCC presents: Santa Barbara Art Association Exhibit
July 5-September 25, 2012
Opening Reception
Sunday, July 5, 5-8 pm
as part of Santa Barbara's 1st Thursday
Art at the JCC is hosting a juried art show for the Santa Barbara Art Association (SBAA). Paintings in a mix of media and genres will be submitted by SBAA members to be judged for excellence. Those chosen will exhibit at the Bronfman Family Jewish Community Center Gallery July 5-Sept. 25, 2012. The judge will be Frank Goss, owner of Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery.
Artist and collector Eli Luria launched Art at the JCC in 1999 to provide high-caliber, strongly-themed exhibits for the Santa Barbara community. The exhibit openings often feature gallery talks and panels with artists, curators and collectors that draw lively crowds.
The Santa Barbara Art Association’s first exhibition was in June 1952 at the Faulkner Gallery’s reopening after the war. Started by a few of the local artists with the mission to present free art shows and encourage art in the community, they have sponsored over 500 shows at venues around town with a rich diversity of art in various media. SBAA now has 545 members, including painters, printmakers, mixed media artists, sculptors, ceramists, fused glass makers, and jewelers. SBAA is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

The Central Coast Koi Club will hold its next meeting on July 5th from 5:30 to 8:00pm. Meetings are typically held at a member’s home or business on the first Thursday of every month. The first half hour is for relaxed socializing and pond viewing. An informal pot luck meal follows, where discussions are entertaining and fun. This month’s meeting will include an informational talk on solar pumps by Mike Sims. If you own a pond, or are an aspiring pond owner, this group can enlighten you with all their experiences; the good, bad, and even the ugly. For more information, and for locations, email Debi (director and certified Koi Health Advisor) at centralcoastkoiclub@charter.net or call Sara Bilsten, President, at 805.748.2325

Autistic and Asperger Adult Interest Group
|
|
1st Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 pm
At the United Methodist Church,
Wesley Building (near the preschool)
1515 Fredricks, San Luis Obispo
The Autistic and Asperger Adult Interest Group provides an opportunity for adults with Autism or Asperger's to get together, to share information and life experiences, and to meet others who may have experience in dealing with issues that are of particular concern to us.
If you are on the spectrum, or if you think you may be, join us. We will be seeking common interests that we would like to address, and deciding the format and direction of this group. No particular agenda is being proposed, as the interests and experience of the members will clearly be paramount in setting any future agenda.
If you are an adult on the spectrum, I invite you to attend a meeting to see if you can benefit from or help others by being part of this group.
If you are an adult who thinks you may be on the spectrum, I invite you to attend a meeting to see if we can assist you in deciding whether to seek a diagnosis, resources and methods to self-diagnose, and what difference having a diagnosis might mean.

The San Luis Obispo Chapter of the California Native Plant Society will host the second of two field trips to one of the “hottest” spots for botanical diversity in San Luis Obispo County. Join D.R. “Doc” Miller to see blooming specimens of the rare Douglas’ mesamint (Pogogyne douglasii), the ruby chalice clarkia (Clarkia rubicunda), the Arroyo de la Cruz mariposa lily (Calochortus clavatus var. recurvifolius), the bluff California lilac (Ceanothus maritimus), and possibly the dwarf goldenstar (Bloomeria humilis). Arroyo De La Cruz features a variety of plant communities and a number of endemics found only in this relatively small area, full of rare and endangered plants. Meet at the parking lot of Spencer’s Market, 2650 Main Street, Morro Bay, at 9:00 am. From there, we will drive to the Elephant Seal Overlook north of San Simeon on Highway 1 (at 9:30 am) to pick up any participants from Cambria and the North County, and then proceed to the Arroyo De La Cruz site. The field trip will last about 3 hours.

UCSB MFA 2012 Exhibition: Headgear for Tony presents fresh talent from the Fine Art graduate department at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). The work of MFA recipients Tim Brown, Jared Flores, Emily Halbardier, Bessie Kunath, Jae Hee Lee, Nick Loewen, Ruby Osorio, Rimas Simaitis, and Van Tran is shaped by their experiences in the UCSB Department of Art’s graduate program, which emphasizes interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to art-making and the utilization of campus resources. The artists also engage in programs outside the required MFA curriculum to both expand their interdisciplinary scope and supplement their own artistic focus, interests, and goals. Co-organized by Laurel Beckman, Professor and Graduate Program Chair, Department of Art at UCSB, and Karla Blancas, CAF Curatorial Associate, the exhibition presents the artists’ unique perspectives composed of diverse mediums and viewpoints.
Special thanks to: Casa Magazine, Santa Barbara, CA; The Daily Sound, Santa Barbara, CA; Montecito Messenger; Santa Barbara Independent; Santa Barbara News-Press; UCSB, Santa Barbara, CA; UCSB Arts Research Initiative, Santa Barbara, CA; UCSB Department of Art, Santa Barbara, CA; UCSB Interdisciplinary Humanities Center, Santa Barbara, CA; and Wayne McCall & Associates, Santa Barbara, CA.
Bloom Projects: Susanna Vapnek, Sundowner
Inspired by the 2008 Tea Fire, Susanna Vapnek’s paintings tap into the intensity of shared community experience with emotive, apocalyptic representations of the Santa Barbara fire season. The exhibition is titled Sundowner, a reference to dangerous and uncontrollable hot winds that descend from the mountains to the sea fueling fires into raging infernos. Her Southern California landscapes expose the fluidity, energy, and dark side of a region often viewed as an eternal paradise.
New York-based Susanna Vapnek received a BA, Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH, and a MFA, School of Visual Arts, New York, NY. A painter and collage artist, as well as documentary filmmaker, Vapnek spends time in Santa Barbara, CA.
Special thanks to: Andrea Lang Fund; The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, New York, NY; Susan E. Join us for an evening with Fukushima survivor Chieko Shiina
Cafe Roma: Tuesday, July 10 at 6:00
Dinner reservation needed - only 80 tickets available
Sponsored by Mothers for Peace
We are honored to host Cheiko Shiina, a mother from Fukushima who will be on a week-long speaking tour of California organized by Steve Zeltzer and Umi Hagitani of Nuke-Free California. They are traveling the coast of California to talk about the disaster at Fukushima.
Mothers for Peace member Carole Hisasue of Los Osos will also share her experiences from several trips to Japan since the catastrophe. Carole is in Tokyo now. She writes, "I am from Tokyo, where I worked in radio and television. Moved to SLO in 2006 to find a life of health, sustainability and self-sufficiency. I thought our little ranch was perfect for that (despite Diablo Canyon so close by.) The Fukushima Daiichi disaster kicked me awake. Extended family members in Fukushima Prefecture have suffered the most in the aftermath of the disaster, but the problem is not just a local one. It is worldwide."
Steve Zeltzer has made a documentary film, "Fukushima: Never Again!," which will be available for purchase that evening.
This will be a rare opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from Fukushima. We hope you will plan to join us.
The dinner including tip is $25. Vegetarian lasagna as only Cafe Roma does it, salad and dessert will be served, and wine by the glass at a no-host bar.
How to reserve you ticket: Pay via the Mothers for Peace website. mothersforpeace.org or you can mail a check payable to Mothers for Peace to Evy Justesen, 2065 McCollum St, SLO 93405.
Please pay for your ticket by July 1 so we can give Cafe Roma a head count by July 4th.
For more information, call Evy Justesen at 805-546-8907 or Linda Seeley at 805-234-1769

Coalesce Bookstore presents in concert June 13, (Friday), Darryl Purpose with Julie Beaver
Showtime: 7 p.m.
Tickets: $15
In 1996, Darryl Purpose left his career as a blackjack player to become a national touring singer-songwriter. Headlining at venues such as McCabe’s in Los Angeles, the Kennedy Center in New York and the Kerrville Folk Festival, Darryl played an average of 150 shows a year until 2004. Drawing on his experiences as a peace activist and his stories of the rambling road, he created a wealth of poignant, beautiful and powerful songs – releasing six critically acclaimed CDs. He was thrilled to share stages with a variety of well-known artists, including Santana, Ellis Paul, Pete Seeger, David Carter and Tracy Grammer, and Bonnie Raitt. During this time Darryl
co-founded the Second Strings Project, helping to bring used guitar strings
to musicians in need around the globe.
In 2004 Darryl took a sabbatical in Colorado, climbing mountains and exploring other creative pursuits, In 2009 he was inducted into the Blackjack Hall of Fame. Now he has returned to full time performing with renewed energy and vision.
This summer, Purpose will be releasing his first CD of original material in more than ten years.
Performing in concert with Darryl is local fiddler and vocalist, Julie Beaver. Julie’s musical ranges are from classical, the blues and bluegrass. She currently plays with the band, Julie & the Bad Dogs.
Purpose has the voice of James Taylor, the brains of Bob Dylan, and the soul of Willie Nelson.” -Attache, US Airlines in-flight magazine
“A physically imposing man, hat firmly on head and dressed in black, he bordered on the menacing, until he opened his mouth. Then his natural warmth and charm blazed through.” – Michael Mee, Southern Reporter
“America’s most original narrative songwriter since Harry Chapin” – Q Magazine
“Darryl Purpose’s music hits all the vital areas: the heart, the mind and the gut… Purpose delivers these tales in language that is precise and unflinching, with a voice that rings true from experience. These songs never let go.” – New Orleans Gambit Weekly

Like Mozart before him, Korngold was a child prodigy who found renown and fame in Europe. Unlike Mozart, Korngold lived in the golden age of Hollywood, and after he moved to the United States in the 1930s, he became a film composer for films like "The Adventures of Robin Hood" and "The Sea Hawk" while still finding time to write serious classical music. Join Festival artists for a champagne brunch and then sit back while pianist John Novacek acts as tour guide behind the score of this fascinating quartet by this discintcly 20th century composer.

Launch and Signing of Children’s books: “Camouflage” and “Ants on a Log” at Whiz Kids Toy Store, San Luis Obispo.
Local children’s book author, Beryl Reichenberg will be launching two of her books on Saturday, July 14 from 11 AM to 3 PM at Whiz Kids Toy Store at 3979 S. Higuera in San Luis Obispo, next to Trader Joe’s.
Beryl will be on hand to sign her books, “Ants on a Log” and “Camouflage” and to answer questions and talk about her writing process. Small children are welcome to make a small book.
Beryl has been a San Luis Obispo artist for many years, and during the past five years, she also turned to writing and illustrating children’s books. “I remember how my grandfather told us stories when we were young in an old, rocking chair by the fireplace. I started by writing stories for my own grandchildren.”
She has now produced over 35 titles, illustrated with her drawings and photographs. A traditional publisher, Oak Tree Press, has published three of her books. Blurb.com publishes the other titles.
She holds a Master’s Degree from UCLA and has taught school in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. She now lives in San Luis Obispo, California.
Also at the book launch will be Gini Griffin, another local artist who drew the animals for “Camouflage”. In the past, Gini has illustrated other book covers and has a degree in Fine Arts from Claremont Colleges. Beryl Reichenberg completed the illustrations in “Camouflage” and produced the illustrations for “Ants on a Log”.
Please join them both at this event. For more information, call Whiz Kids Toy Store at 805-547-1733.
(Press Release, Page 2 for Beryl Reichenberg) Summary of “Camouflage”
How do animals hide, camouflage and protect themselves in the wild? This interactive book, encourages young children to hunt for various animals in their native habitat and to find their hiding places.
Summary of “Ants on a Log”
Jack the Rabbit is a picky eater and refuses to eat vegetables, no matter how much his mother tries to encourage him. How do school snacks, like ants on a log, entice him to eat his greens?
Night Owl Reviews calls “Ants on a Log” a "cute children's story (that) will delight children with illustrations of little bunnies that they can relate to" and recommends it as "a wonderful addition to any child or family's library."

Coalesce Bookstore invites you to a book-signing: Gosling Two by Tom Dale
July 14 (Saturday), 2-4 p.m.
About the book:
Few people are as one-dimensional as they appear when we first meet them. The secrets borne by silver-haired old men are theirs alone to keep, and their scars never see sunlight. But Jimmy Donlin, on his death bed, tells his wife and children why his life has been marked by flashes of crushing remorse and bad dreams.
Gosling Two tells Jimmy's story in a series of flashbacks, revealing how, in nineteen-sixty one, a series of simple choices placed him in the company of killers for hire, and pushed him into in a life and death struggle with Cuban insurgents. The story concludes with a stand-off with Russian subs and a violent tropical storm off the southern approaches to the Panama Canal.
Even with the burden of heat, insects, hard labor, bad food, and problems with an elderly team of technicians sent to photograph their quarry, (plan A), the story is told with empathy and humor.

About the Author:
Tom Dale is a firmly transplanted Okie who first saw California in 1957 while going through advanced infantry training at Fort Ord. After the Army and a little time mucking in the oil fields of northeastern Oklahoma, he found his way into higher education. Graduating from the University of Central Oklahoma with degrees in art, history and English, he stayed in the area for two more years teaching school, waiting on his then wife to finish her degree. With all his worldly goods he came back to California in the summer of 1966, settling in Orange County. After many trips to Morro Bay for R & R from teaching middle schoolers, well, what better place to retire?
Has anything been left out? Yes. He won't tell everything so we don't get to know it all. The only other bit he dropped was something about military intelligence (if there is such a thing) and one of his radio call signs. Juliet -alpha-victor-alpha...JAVA! Has anyone ever seen Tom Dale without a cup of coffee?

The Red Skunk Jipzee Swing Band puts together a truly authentic vintage-style sound that draws from Django Reinhardt, 30’s European Jazz, and American roots traditions. The band recently released their 3rd studio album, Hot and Haunting. In light of this new recording, their live act revolves around the album theme; a sharp contrast between the care-free hot swing of the 30’s, and a powerful and haunting sound which has been prevalent in the band’s recordings since “Premonitions.” The truly remarkable part about this band, however, lies in their ability to transport an audience back in time. From the moment the Skunks walk through your door donning fur coats and retro equipment, you will have entered a time period of authentic entertainment, and may not want to leave. As a thank you to all of our wonderful wine club members we would like to invite you to our annual Wine Club BBQ & Summer Concert featuring the Red Skunk Band. No outside food, drinks or pets allowed. Blankets & Chairs are welcome.

Join the Central Coast Country Dance Society for a contra dance on Saturday,
July 14. The caller is Warren Blier (Monterey), and the band is Caliope House
(San Luis Obispo). The evening' starts with a contra dance introduction at 7:00pm,
and then dancing from 7:30 – 10:30.
Contra dance evolved from the early English, Scottish, Irish, and French country dances which came over with the first immigrants to the USA. It is very lively and social, and very easy to learn, almost as easy as walking! You don't need to bring a partner with you, but it's lots of fun to come with a group of friends. Everyone ends up dancing with everyone at the contra dance!
Join us for this EXCELLENT dance! The cost is $9. It's all at the Odd Fellows Hall,
520 Dana Street, San Luis Obispo. For more info, visit www.cccds.org

This weekend celebration will take place at the Veterans Memorial Building at the foot of the pier in Cayucos, CA.
This celebration honors Queen Isabel of Portugal who sold her jewelry during a time of drought and depression to help feed the poor. To show her love and humility the popular queen would place her crown upon the head of a young village girl.
The festivities will begin Saturday the 14th at 6pm with Linguica Sandwiches ($5 until sold out). Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 6:30pm. Dancing by Lightning & Whispers (Traditional Portuguese Folk Dance and American music) from 7:00 to 11:00pm, with Grand March showcasing the queens at 8:00pm. All of these events are open to the public.
Sunday the 15th will commence at the Veterans Building with the parade of Queens and their courts, from all over California at 10:30am. The parade will march to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for 11:00am mass where the coronation Senior and Junior Queen will take place. These 2012 queens will lead the parade back to the Veterans Building where there will be a BBQ from 11:30am to 2:00pm. The BBQ is $15 a plate (Top block and all the trimmings). The auction will begin at 2:00pm with the raffle drawing following the auction.

The Vienna into which Franz Schubert and Alban Berg were born was accustomed to thinking of itself as peerless among Europe's musical capitals, and with good reason. Both composers' lives were spiced by the cultural variety that flowed through as a matter of course - from Austria and Germany to the west, from the Czech Lands to the north and east, from Hungary and the Balkans to the south and southeast and from Italy to the southwest. Join Scott Yoo as he and the Festival artists explore this rich musical world.

Czech Nationalist composer Bedrich Smetana had an inspired artistic career despite a life tempered with revolution and tragedy. Forced to spend most of his life in exile from his native Bohemia, he faced deafness at the end of his career, like Beethoven before him. During this time of deafness, he composed "From My Life" to paint a "tone picture" of his life. Join Dale Barltrop and friends for an exploration of this emotional, and highly technical string quartet.

The genius of Mozart withstands the centuries and Strauss and Tchaikovsky, like all composers, were immeasurably influenced by his musical mastery. Strauss was raised with Mozart as his most profound musical influence and his love for the composer inspired him to establish an annual music festival in Salzburg. Tchaikovsky described listening to Mozart as a "sacred delight."

Xiaojian Zhao of UCSB presents a historical look at the Chinese in Santa Barbara at the Santa Barbara Genealogical Society monthly meeting.
The Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society holds its monthly general meeting on Saturday July 21st, at the First Presbyterian Church, 21 E. Constance at State Street, 9:30 am to 12:00 pm. Special interest Groups meet at 9:30am for Beginning Genealogy, German Ancestry, Italian Ancestry and Computer Genealogy and 9:00am for JewishGen. Featured program starts at 10:30am.
This month’s meeting features Xiaojian Zhao, Associate Professor of Asian American Studies at UC Santa Barbara. Her talk will focus on her film project about the history of the Chinese immigrants in Santa Barbara beginning in the 1860s. The presentation will include images and documents from her years of research. She will share some of the unique features of the relationship between Chinese immigrant laborers and Santa Barbara residents in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Xiaojian Zhao was born in China and completed her Ph.D. in History from the University of California at Berkeley. She is former Chair of the UCSB Department of Asian American Studies from 2005 to 2008. She has offered courses in Asian American History, Chinese American History, Asian American Women's History, Asian Americans in American Law, and Asian American Families.
Her book, Remaking Chinese America, was published in 2002 by Rutgers University Press, and it was subsequently awarded the History Book Award from the Association for Asian American Studies. In recognition of her work, the Award Committee said: "Xiaojian Zhao's Remaking Chinese America, with its focus on the reunification of trans-Pacific families in the post-World War II period, offers an interpretation of an understudied era in Asian American history that is complex and humane--a rich portrait of families living an ocean apart that reunited and built communities in the United States.
Special interest Groups meet at 9:30am for Beginning Genealogy, German Ancestry, Italian Ancestry and Computer Genealogy and 9:00am for JewishGen. Meeting and featured program starts at 10:30am.
Come join us. You do not need to be a member to enjoy this wonderful presentation.

Coalesce Bookstore invites you a book-signing, July 21, (Saturday), 2-4 p.m.
“Flying Lessons: How to Be the Pilot of Your Own Life” by Pamela Hale
An Inspirational Manual for Leading, Living, and Loving
“Don’t let the fear of falling keep you from knowing the joy of flight.”
—Lane Wallace, Flying magazine, January 2011
In her beautiful multi-layered memoir, Flying Lessons life coach, energy healer, and spiritual counselor
Pamela Hale uses the story of her pursuit of a private pilot’s license to help anyone—in the air or on the ground—to break free of “gravity” and realize one’s potential to soar. Readers will journey with Pam as she conquers her own self-doubt and fear of flying. They too will gather wisdom from Clio, her flight instructor, and recognize the key challenges, Clio’s solutions, and the gifts of each step in the journey. They will learn how to navigate the turbulence in their own lives.
Broken into three parts that include seven “flight lessons” for soaring beyond your limits, each lesson also corresponds with a chakra, yoga pose, and an archetype, so the manual works on all levels of body, mind, and spirit.
Lesson 1 – Know Where You’re Going to Land
Lesson 2 – Bring Enough Fuel for the Journey
Lesson 3 – Take the Pilot’s Seat
Lesson 4 – Remember Why You Long to Fly
Lesson 5 – Communicate with the Controllers
Lesson 6 – Broaden Your Scan
Lesson 7 – Give Your Way to the Winds
From the “dipstick” that helps flyers manage their energy, to the story of how flying helped Pam in her cancer journey, to the ways her clients have navigated uncharted territory, Flying Lessons is a practical and entertaining journey in authentic power, freedom, and fulfillment.
With a foreword by Alberto Villoldo, PH.D. and breathtaking aerial photos by the author, the book is the perfect companion for anyone who wants to step outside their safe place and learn how to spread their wings!

While Brahms waited until middle age to write his first symphony, his first symphony is so admired and respected that some have called it "Beethoven's Tenth." The Romanze was written during Strauss's Brahms adoration period. Korngold, the European-turned-Hollywood-composer, had vowed to write nothing but film music until Hitler was defeated. His triumphant violin concerto premiered after the end of WW II and secured his place among the musical giants.
Strauss - Romanze

Judge Linda Hurst will speak CASA supporters to commemorate a milestone reached by CASA of SLO County. For the first time CASA has 100 volunteer court-appointed special advocates (CASAs) serving 145 abused, neglected or abandoned children. These children enter a bewildering social service system, where no one speaks on their behalf. CASA recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers who speak for these children in court with the goal of ensuring a safe, nurturing, and permanent home.

Songwriters at Play will kick off a new Thursday night series at SLO Down Pub in Arroyo Grande. The July 26 debut features one of our favorite local musicians: Amber Cross of the Old-Time Fiddle & Banjo Show.
Originally from Maine, Amber Cross grew up surrounded by gospel music in a small town church where her father still preaches and her mother plays piano. Commonly referred to as "The little girl with the big voice," Amber's original old-time style has been likened to that of an old Smithsonian recording. She writes from her own life struggles and experiences delivering her stories with unforgettable power and emotion. Her major influences are Hazel Dickens, Iris Dement, Rose Maddox, Tom Waits, Greg Brown and The Carter Family. Check her out at http://ambercrossmusic.blogspot.com
Also on the July 26 debut: Rob Kimball, Young Ireland, Ivan Ulz, and Erin Montgomery.
Songwriters At Play is held every Thursday 6:30-9:30pm at SLO Down Pub, 1200 E. Grand Ave. (at Brisco), Arroyo Grande, CA 93420, 805.481.4067, http://www.slodownpub.com. "Last Station" is the first record of San Francisco-based indie folk-rock band Zej & Calen. The duo raised money for the album through Kickstarter and hired a San Francisco all-star team of musicians to perform on the recording. The album title refers to the train of industry and progress, barreling down on the last station, the end of the line...our last chance to turn it all around.
The duo will be performing live in San Luis Obispo on July 26 at Kruezberg, CA as part of a California tour that includes stops in Monterey, Santa Cruz, Sacramento, Sonoma, San Francisco, and Mariposa. Zej & Calen will tour New England in September. All tour dates are posted at www.zejandcalen.com.
ZEJ & CALEN
“At the same time dire and hopeful, ‘Last Station’ is a mellow and sometimes edgy meeting of two songwriters' unique styles. Zej & Calen’s lyrics and voices in counterpoint deliver goose bumps... It’s a beautifully crafted album”
San Francisco’s Zej & Calen have honed their musical chemistry playing Bay Area clubs, coffee houses and house concerts together for over two years. They are meticulous songwriters, producing deeply emotive lyrics and melodies that successfully bridge folk, rock, and world genres, revealing influences like Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young, Jack Johnson and Dave Matthews. Having each been part of larger electric bands in the past, they specifically enjoy the acoustic nature of this current joint project. They've shared bills with rising San Francisco artists like Kelly McFarling, Goodnight Texas, Mana Maddy, Sonya Cotton, Lia Rose, and others.

In 1809, Thomasina Coverly, the daughter of the house, is a precocious teenager with ideas about mathematics well ahead of her time. She studies with her tutor Septimus Hodge, a friend of Lord Byron who is an unseen guest in the house. In the present, a writer and an academic converge on the house: Hannah Jarvis, the writer, is investigating a hermit who once lived on the grounds; Bernard Nightingale, a professor of literature, is investigating a mysterious chapter in the life of Byron. As their investigations unfold, helped by Valentine Coverly, a post-graduate student in mathematical biology, the truth about what happened in Thomasina's lifetime is gradually revealed.

LOVE FREE OR DIE is about a man whose two defining passions are in direct conflict: his love for God and for his partner Mark. Gene Robinson is the first openly gay person to become a bishop in the historic traditions of Christendom. His consecration in 2003, to which he wore a bullet-proof vest, caused an international stir, and he has lived with death threats every day since.
LOVE FREE OR DIE follows Robinson from small-town churches in the New Hampshire North Country to Washington’s Lincoln Memorial to London’s Lambeth Palace, as he calls for all to stand for equality – inspiring bishops, priests and ordinary folk to come out from the shadows and change history.
This inspiring film will premiere on the Central Coast on Saturday, July 28th at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2201 Lawton Ave, San Luis Obispo (on the corner of South St. and Lawton).
This screening is sponsored by the Coalition of Welcoming Congregations, the San Luis Obispo Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and St Benedict's Episcopal Church, Los Osos.

SLOfolks is very happy to announce that Baguette Quartette will be coming back to play for us at Castoro Cellars.
Saturday, July 28, 7pm $22
Catered dinner by Thomas Organics, 6PM, $15
Baguette Quartette is a San Francisco Bay Area group that plays music that was heard in Paris between 1920 and 1940 on street corners, in cafes, and in popular dance halls. Led by accordionist Odile Lavault, its repertoire consists of valses musettes, tangos, pasos dobles, fox trots, marches and realistic songs. Odile Lavault first played her accordion in the cafes and bistros of her native Paris.
She mastered the traditional Parisian repertoire as well as Gypsy music called Musette….a blend of Folk music from Auvergne & light Parisian music from the 19 the Century that matured in the 1930's under the influence of Italian immigrants. It has a distinct jazzy flavor. Django Reinhard started his career as a banjo player in a musette dance band..

African Showboyz - 8pm
1531 Monterey
San Luis Obispo California 93401
USA 805-547-0278
Price: $20
Napoleon, Joseph, Moses, Isaac and JJ Sabbah, all brothers, are the African Showboyz. The boyz were born and raised in Binaba, a small village in the north east region of Ghana, West Africa.
In Binaba, it is the way of the village for the men to marry multiple wives. The Showboyz are born from the same mother and the same father, though collectively there are 54 children from their father descent. Napoleon, the elder of the brothers, received a vision from his grandfather named Apabum Abugri during a juju practice at a very young age. He was to embark on a world journey in effort to bring recognition to the suffrage of the African people and feed his ever-growing family. Napo engaged Joseph, next of kin; his “backbone’’ and they made instruments from thigh bones and hides of village kills that had been given to the chief’s palace. Isaac was taught village dances to accompany Napoleon’s kone and Joseph’s siyak, and in 1983 the three Sabbah’s children set out on two bicycles to play for neighboring villages. In 1987, Isaac learned the bind douk and JJ and Moses were added, playing the bin bill and tonton sanson, and the African Showboyz emerged as Africa’s pentacle of conscious musicians. They began touring neighboring countries and performed before enthusiastic audiences in Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Chad, Cameroun, Niger, Senegal, Burkina Fasso, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Libya, and Cote d’ Ivoire, while collaborating with Fela Kuti, Femi Kuti, Alpha Blondy, Freddie Meiwey, Ras Kimono and Steve Wonder. It is fascinating to note that while touring in Africa, the brothers carried no documentation but simply performed for immigration officials at the borders and were permitted access.

The poignant, life-affirming international hit comedy/drama, with music and dance, by Richard Alfieri. An intense and remarkable relationship develops between a headstrong woman who hires an acerbic and adventurous male dance instructor to give her private dancing lessons, which begin with a rocky start between opposites but gradually blossom into a profound and affectionate friendship as they dance the Swing and Tango and share laughs, a cry and life's innermost joys and secrets. The story delves deeply into real emotions, overcoming stereotypes and intolerance, while experiencing the true meaning of friendship. All Fridays and Saturdays, at 7:30pm; and all Sunday Matinees, at 3pm, through July 29.

The Central Coast Watercolor Society will meet for an exciting painting demonstration by Robert Burridge, Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 7:00PM at the Creekside Mobile Home Community Club House 3960 South Higuera Street, San Luis Obispo.
Robert Burridge is an internationally known painter and workshop instructor who will be demonstrating loose and contemporary techniques for watermedia, including acrylics, fluid acrylics, dyes, water soluble markers - if it dissolves in water, he is going to paint with it! If you are looking for more fun in your watercolor paintings, this Demo is for you! Burridge’s positive, fearless approach inspires everyone to loosen up and paint with endless possibilities.
Think experimental, contemporary watermedia painting! Plus - he will show you how to save hundreds of dollars in framing... Bob will demo his technique of mounting watercolor paper on a canvas.
Robert Burridge was a noted internationally award-winning Industrial Designer who, after twenty-five years in the corporate design world, focused his new life to painting everyday. Today, he is a celebrated, contemporary painter, contributing author to artists’ magazines and publisher of his own books and instructional DVDs. Burridge attributes his success to his early education from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and his stint as an adjunct professor at Cooper Union School for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City, teaching typography and film making.
Burridge is the Honorary President of the International Society of Acrylic Painters and a Signature Member of both the Philadelphia Water Color Society and the ISAP. His honors include the prestigious Crest Medal for Achievement in the Arts and Franklin Mint awards. His popular work hangs in the permanent collections of international embassies, corporate galleries, art colleges as well as television and the entertainment industry, and is represented by galleries in Santa Fe, Austin, Cambria and Key West.
