Meeting Our Goals and Moving Beyond Discouragement
Contact: Mahakankala Buddhist Center   805-563-6000   info@meditationinsantabarbara.org

We all may have an idea of the changes we want to make in our life, but many times we lack the understanding to know what those changes really should be, and how to bring them about. We need a clear understanding of the best path for ourself, and be confident in that understanding while working toward our goals with a relaxed and joyful mind. Buddha taught many methods for achieving exactly these results. Please join us to learn practical methods to overcome our discouragement and replace it with an entirely new way of achieving our wishes. We will offer two sessions: the first will cover the removal of obstacles (3:30--5); the second teaching will cover the development of relaxed and consistent effort (5:15--6:30). If we can accomplish a removal of obstacles and a consistent effort, then our goals are definitely achievable.

Led by American Buddhist Monk Kelsang Wangpo.

Class fee: $20 (free for Members)

Afterwards we will have a chance to relax over a light vegetarian dinner. Dinner cost: $10--please RSVP.

Songwriters At Play presents Alice Wallace
. After moving to the Los Angeles area three years ago from her lifelong home in Florida, Alice threw herself into the performing circuit - steadily attracting larger audiences and landing opening spots with well-known artists like Lisa Loeb, Shawn Mullins, Sophie B. Hawkins and Al Stewart. Now she's touring with her first full-length studio album, "Sweet Madness". With a style that falls somewhere between the alt-country crooning of Emmylou Harris and the bluesy timbre of Bonnie Raitt, Alice draws from simple and honest folk melodies she learned from her father growing up when crafting her songs about life, love and the pursuit of that ever-elusive happiness. www.alicewallacemusic.com

In the spirit of the holiday, we challenged local musicians to write a new song for the new year and perform it on our showcase. Taking up the challenge: Craig Louis Dingman, Mike Swan, Charles Motley of the band called CAMP, and the Kern River troubadour known as Lost Hills.

Songwriters At Play holds showcases every Sunday afternoon, 1:00 – 4:00 pm at Sculpterra Winery, 5015 Linne Road, Paso Robles, 805-226-8881. We generally believe that external conditions such as food, friends, and money are the real causes of happiness, and we devote nearly all our time and energy to acquiring these. Yet if we check carefully, we find our external experiences are actually a result of our state of mind. Because of this, we have the extraordinary potential to change our life--because happiness and suffering are states of mind. Through gaining insight into the nature of our mind, we can see clearly that if we change our mind, we can change our life. Now is a great time to set out on a path to happiness. Learn practical methods for making lasting changes toward a happier and more joyful life.

    Wireless:

In honor of community radio station KCSB’s 50th anniversary, CAF presents Wireless, an exhibition featuring an international roster of artists exploring themes of radio transmission and communications. KCSB is a leader in non-commercial FM radio and the resurgent free-form format in the U.S. KCSB 91.9 FM is run by the Associated Students of the University of California Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA. Wireless at CAF showcases artists residing in New York, Berlin, London, and Santa Barbara whose work is similarly concerned with the conveyance of ideas, memories, and objects across distances long and short. Former KCSB DJ and CAF Assistant Curator, NY-based curator Elizabeth Lovero brings together diverse mediums, such as sculptural installations, painting, video, photography, and sound, by artists Francis Baudevin, Dove Bradshaw, Nathan Carter, Tyler Coburn, Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson, Ellie Ga, Nicolas Lobo, Neighborhood Public Radio, Marko Peljhan and Matthew Beiderman, Daniel Perlin, Roman Signer, and Jim Toth. Wireless addresses pertinent issues in the radio community by showing works that champion individuality, mirror the spirit of decentralization and diversity in ownership and programming, explore community and low-power radio stations, and challenge the corporate broadcasting formulas.

In addition, Jim Toth’s new sculptural speaker installation will carry the KCSB stream 24/7 at CAF, KCSB DJs Sarah O’Doherty, Rajlakshmi Purkayastha, and Caitlin Borzi will spin an eclectic groove from 5-8 pm at Paseo Nuevo’s Center Court on the opening day of the exhibition, Neighborhood Public Radio will offer an interactive performance, Picnic Revolution, on November 4 from noon - 1 pm at UCSB Storke Plaza, and the UCSB MultiCultural Center will screen Magic Radio, a film about the democratic power of radio in Niger, on November 16, 6 pm at the MCC Theatre. Admission to exhibition and the above listed associated events is free.

Elizabeth Lovero is a curator and writer, who is currently pursuing an M.A. in Art History at Hunter College, New York, NY.

Bloom Projects: Kathleen Yorba, Sequence

Kathleen Yorba is a mixed-media artist, her interests are the study of her Latina genealogy, the idea of organic memory and the inner workings of what is fondly called the three-pound enigma (brain). Yorba delights in the novelty of discovery while furthering her ongoing exploration of memory and identity. Delicate materials and artistic brevity encourage rumination on “the illusive characteristics of memory,” and inspiration drawn from the observation of a beehive’s life cycle reflects the search for internal meaning in the world outside.

Kathleen Yorba is originally from La Junta, CO and currently lives and works in Arroyo Grande, CA. She received her M.F.A. from Azusa Pacific University, Azusa, CA and her B.A. from the University La Verne, La Verne, CA.  Yorba was selected for the Jentel Artist Residency Program in 2010. Most recently she has shown in exhibitions at the Pacific Arts League, Palo Alto, CA, Studio 5216, Los Angeles, CA, and 825 Gallery, Los Angeles, CA.

Songwriters at Play celebrates one year of weekly showcases at Sculpterra Winery in Paso Robles
.  Our Jan. 8 headliner is Janet Robin, who was also featured on the first showcase last January.

Janet Robin is an L.A.-based singer-songwriter who tours all over the world as a solo, and sometimes in the role of backup guitarist to the likes of Michelle Shocked and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham. Songs from her recent CDs can be heard here: http://janetrobin.com/music/

As a teenager, she studied guitar with Randy Rhoads (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne), and became the lead guitarist for the all-female rock band Precious Metal. The band was released several albums on major labels, and collaborated with members of Heart, Poison and Cheap Trick.  Janet's solo acoustic shows sill include powerful, passionate guitar work, and even an electric banjo played through wah-wah effects.

Songwriters At Play holds showcases every Sunday afternoon, 1:00 – 4:00 pm at Sculpterra Winery, 5015 Linne Road, Paso Robles, CA, 805-226-8881. The Michael Winograd Trio comes to Atascadero

Congregation Ohr Tzafon presents “THE MICHAEL WINOGRAD TRIO” on January 8, 2012! Start the New Year with great sounds from three of the top klezmer musicians in New York. The fun begins at 4:00pm at Congregation Ohr Tzafon, 2605 Traffic Way in Atascadero for a donation of only $10.

The trio features Michael Winograd on the clarinet, Patrick Farrell on the accordion and Benjy Fox-Rosen on bass. Clarinetist Michael Winograd has recorded with the Klezmer Conservatory Band. He also produces records, composes music and plays the synthesizer in the Brooklyn based metal band Yiddish Princess. Accordion/composer Patrick Farrell specializes in new-music, free jazz, cabaret theater, Klezmer and other forms of East-European folk music. Benjy Fox-Rosen is a singer, bassist and composer creating new Yiddish music.

Together they blend infectious traditional melodies with new compositions, sumptuous chamber music-like arrangements and breathtaking improvisations. This rising newish ensemble is out to redefine the sound of contemporary klezmer. “Perhaps the leading voice of the younger generation of performers and composers within Klezmer, Yiddish and new Jewish music” says Joel Rubin of the University of Virginia Department of Music. “An unusual but intriguing amalgam; one that expands upon from both contemporary and historical sources”, says Michael G. Nastos, of the All Music Guide.

Lompoc Civic Theatre proudly presents Twelfth Night, William Shakespeare's
uproarious comedy of love, deceit, and frivolity. This fully staged
workshop production was rehearsed in an intense 9 day process. Dedicated
performers worked 12 to 14 hours each day to bring Shakespeare's text to
life, several being college students on their holiday 'break'. With lots
of focus and energy, they bring you the story of Viola, a stranded young
lady who has been separated from her brother at sea and takes on the
appearance of a man. As she falls in love with Orsino, the Duke of
Illyria, who is in turn, already entranced by the Lady Olivia, Olivia
begins to fall for the new guy in town (Viola in disguise). And there's
not just sappy romance; everybody can enjoy this hilarious Shakespearian
tale!

The diverse cast features everything from high school students with no
Shakespeare experience to college theatre students and folks with
professional actor training. Director Todd Harper, an alumnus of Lompoc
High School and UC Davis, and currently a stage management intern at PCPA
Theaterfest, hoped to bring this project into the community to acquaint
Lompoc with Shakespeare's brilliant works, and he's glad some of the
members of the cast have had no exposure to Shakespeare before, since that
only aids this goal. He believes that so many people are afraid of
Shakespeare because they feel his language is not accessible, but given
the chance to see one of Shakespeare's plays on a stage, that fear can be
easily tossed out the door.

The play, while not a musical, also features an original score by Jonathan
Youngs, a music composition major at UC Davis. Music in the show ranges
from a Spanish gypsy sound to rock comparable to AC/DC. The three piece
band features two acoustic guitars and drums, creating a fresh and unique
sound. The show opens on Friday, January 6th (the "Twelfth Night" of
Christmas) at 7pm in the Lompoc High School Little Theatre. Performances
continue on Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm. Admission is free and
seating is first come, first served. Donations are happily accepted. Don't
miss out on this show that is sure to keep you laughing on the edge of
your seat!

Central Coast newcomer Tiana Star (pictured here), harmony trio Chick Tuesday, and The BlueSouls lead the list of performers for the January 9 Bonnie Raitt tribute concert at The Spot in Arroyo Grande. The event is presented by Songwriters at Play, which has also paid tribute to Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

Each act in the show takes on three songs from Raitt’s 30-year catalog of blues, folk, rock and pop.  Expect to hear hits such as “Nick of Time”, “Something to Talk About” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”  Songwriters at Play head honcho Steve Keywill kick off the show at 7pm.

Local vocalists Melody Klemin, Gary Garrett, and Lompoc’s Kelly Wildowsky are also in the Jan. 9 lineup.

Tiana Star's voice has been called "a cross between the power-pop abilities of Kelly Clarkson and the delicate control of Natalie Merchant." Now featured on TV, film, radio, and touring colleges and music venues nationwide, Tiana Star is an artist on the rise.  In December, she moved her home base from Seal Beach to Atascadero.  www.tianastar.com

We generally believe that external conditions such as food, friends, and money are the real causes of happiness, and we devote nearly all our time and energy to acquiring these. It seems they are the source of our happiness, but actually it is how we view the world that determines our experience, not external conditions. Buddha's teachings reveal how we can have a happy life – a meaningful life – by understanding the real causes of happiness and suffering and identifying the true nature of our situation. Then, we can respond appropriately and in a way that produces the best outcome. This is how we use true wisdom – a mind that always produces happiness and its causes – to improve our life and the lives of others.

    January 2012
It’s a new year and a new beginning!  Throughout the Sweet Springs Nature Preserve, signs of new life are stirring everywhere.  The slender blades of wild hyacinth have pierced the soil in their journey skyward.  The cotyledons of sky lupine have unfolded above a blanket of small, celadon green poppies.  The tendrils of wild cucumber are starting to unfurl, searching for a branch to climb on.  Join us in a new chapter of restoration at the preserve.  Help us remove invasive veldt grass on the new eastern addition so we can encourage the native shrubs and wildflowers that are there, and prepare the area for planting more natives later in the year.  Join us at the corner of 4thStreet & Ramona Ave at 9:00 on Saturday, January 14th.  We’ll have plenty of tools, tips and munchies for everyone. We’ll also be giving away free tees, hats, & totes to winners of our flora & fauna quiz. For more info, contact mcas@morrocoastaudubon.orgor 239-3928.

Paul Cronshaw (“The Beeman”) has been keeping honeybees in Santa Barbara County since graduating from SBHS in 1971. He set up his first hive on the roof of his parent’s house, purchased his first hive equipment from Sears catalog, and ordered a package of bees from Mississippi. Since then he has been following his passion for honeybees by maintaining a small apiary in the Montecito foothills, mentoring beginner beekeepers, teaching beekeeping to high school students, removing and relocating honeybees humanely from structures, and recently starting a “bee-host” program to promote the urban beekeeping movement.

What does the present owe the future?

From medicine to agriculture, energy, communication, and transportation, we have technologies our grandparents could not have imagined.  Some of these technologies have dark sides and unknown consequences.  Who will be the guardians for future generations insuring that our present technologies don't negatively impact our descendants?

The Precautionary Principle suggests that we err on the side of caution when designing for our future.  It is a tool for making better health and environmental decisions, and aims to prevent harm from the outset rather than manage it after the fact.

Although America's founding father's intended a government that would allow its citizens life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, they could not have anticipated the industrial age with its extremely toxic substances that now pollute the soil, air, and water, our country's commons.

What role does both government and the individual play in protecting these commons, our common heritage?  What compelling vision can we have for ourselves and our children that allows us to be prosperous, healthy, and ecologically whole?  Come learn about the Precautionary Principle and its tool kit for communities, organizations, and government.

Carolyn Raffensperger has helped define, shape, and lead the precautionary movement.  She and her team at the Science and Environmental Health Network, have purposefully sown the seeds of the precautionary principle across the United States.

Carolyn Raffensperger is an environmental lawyer and the Executive Director of the Science and Environmental Health Network. She is the co-editor of Precautionary Tools for Reshaping Environmental Policy published by M.I.T. Press (2006) and Protecting Public Health and the Environment: Implementing the Precautionary Principle, published by Island Press (1999). Together, these volumes are the most comprehensive exploration to date of the history, theory, and implementation of the precautionary principle.  Carolyn coined the term “ecological medicine” to encompass the broad notions that both health and healing are entwined with the natural world.

Carolyn will be joined by her friend and colleague David Eisenberg of the Development Center for Appropriate Technology (DCAT), who since 1995, has led the effort to create a sustainable context for building regulations.  A panel discussion including community members from backgrounds of health, agriculture, social justice, and education  will follow the talk.

The event takes place on Monday, January 16, 7pm - 9:30pm, at the Fe Bland Auditorium, Santa Barbara City College West Campus, 721 Cliff Dr, SB 93109.  Admission $10 general/$5 SBCC students, no reservations required. More info; (805) 965-0581,ext 2177, sbpcnet@silcom.com

How Do You Love All the Children, Interview with Architect, Designer William McDonough:
http://www.yesmagazine.org/issues/power-of-one/how-do-you-love-all-the-children
"If design is a signal of intent, and we look at what we've done with the first industrial revolution, we would have to ask, did we intend to do this? If we articulated the retroactive design assignment of the First Industrial Revolution, it would be something like this: "Could you design a system that pollutes the soil, air, and water; that measures productivity by how few people are working; that measures prosperity by how much natural capital you can dig up, bury, burn, or otherwise destroy; that measures progress by the number of smokestacks and requires thousands of complex regulations to keep you from killing each other too quickly; that destroys bio-diversity and cultural diversity; that produces things that are so highly toxic they require thousands of generations to maintain constant vigil while living in terror?"   William McDonough, the Next Industrial Revolution.

Moscow, 1938. A dangerous place to have a sense of humor – or a sense of freedom. Playwright Mikhail Bulgakov, living among dissidents, stalked by secret police, has both. And then he’s offered a cup of poison: a commission to write a play about Stalin to celebrate his 60th birthday. Collaborators by screenwriter John Hodge (Trainspotting) embarks on a surreal journey into the fevered imagination of the writer as he loses himself in a macabre and disturbingly funny relationship with the omnipotent subject of his drama.     The Sweet Adelines International Chapter Tri City Sound Chorus will hold a special open house meet-and-greet, rehearsal and sing-a-long from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19 in Stahnke Hall at Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 4725 S. Bradley Road, Orcutt. There is no fee to attend and refreshments will be served.

Sweet Adelines, Inc., was founded in 1945 when a group of women banded together to enjoy singing four-part, barbershop-style harmony, which had previously been sung exclusively by men. In 1990 the organization changed its name to Harmony International, soon returning to the Sweet Adelines title, but as Sweet Adelines International. Today some 27,000 women enjoy working in harmony in 600 choruses and more than 1,200 quartets in most of the fifty United States as well as in Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Scotland, Sweden, Wales and the Netherlands, and prospective choruses in Denmark, Greece and United Arab Emirates.

Sweet Adelines choruses and quartets perform four-part a cappella harmony, barbershop style. This style of music lends itself to songs from any era including ballads, popular show tunes, even jazz. Sweet Adelines have performed their unique style of music in a number of popular venues from professional sports stadiums, Olympic ceremonies, with major symphonies and even on several national television shows. A PBS special featuring Sweet Adelines International aired nationally to over 80 million households. In August 2006, America chose a Sweet Adelines International quartet from the San Diego area as the New Voice for Oreo.

Since 1968, Tri City Sound has provided women who love to sing the opportunity to blend their voices in four-part harmony, barbershop style here in Northern Santa Barbara County. The chorus rehearsed in Lompoc for decades before it moved its rehearsal space to Orcutt for a more central location for Northern Santa Barbara County's singers. It has also be home to several musicians from southern San Luis Obispo County.

Tri City Sound's regular rehearsals are held Thursdays from 6:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Stahnke Hall at Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 4725 S. Bradley Road, Santa Maria, California. All women, from beginners to advanced vocalists, are invited to join in.

ABOUT LARA DOWNES
A captivating presence both on and offstage, critically acclaimed Steinway Concert Artist Lara Downes is redefining the solo recital format with visionary, cutting-edge performances at prestigious concert venues worldwide.  Lauded by NPR as “a delightful artist with a unique blend of musicianship and showmanship,” Ms. Downes presents the piano repertoire - from traditional favorites to newly commissioned works - in creative ways that bridge musical tastes, genres and audiences. Her fresh interpretations have brought Lara acclaim as one of the most exciting young pianists of today's generation. Since making concert debuts at Queen Elizabeth Hall London, the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Salle Gaveau Paris, she has won over audiences at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, the American Academy Rome, San Francisco Performances, the Montreal Chamber Music Festival and the University of Washington President’s Piano Series, among many others.
Lara’s unique performance style, called “a voyage of discovery and fun” (Sacramento Bee), combines dazzling interpretations with engaging and sometimes humorous narratives that weave musical and historical context around the music she plays.  Often accompanied by multimedia visual and spoken-word components, Lara’s performances construct multi-sensory landscapes that explore the conditions and inspirations that brought the music to life.  Ms. Downes’ performance works have received funding support from prominent organizations such as the National Endowment for the Arts, the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition and American Public Media’s Classical Music Initiative.  In addition to the excitement Lara brings to the concert stage, her commercial recordings have met with tremendous critical and popular acclaim. Her debut CD, Invitation to the Dance, was called“a magical little recording” by NPR, and her second release, American Ballads, was ranked by Amazon.com among the four best recordings of American music ever made. Her most recent recording, Dream of Me, was praised for “exquisite sensitivity” by American Record Guide.  Lara is Artist in Residence at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at the University of California at Davis where she also serves as co-curator of the Mondavi Center’s Studio Classics Series.

After receiving her masters degree, Anne resumed her original career plan, landing a gig with a local quintet, where she met her future husband, pianist Tom Zink.
With her wealth of vocal knowledge, Anne began teaching voice to other aspiring singers. She was soon hired at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles; a college for the performing arts, and currently resides there on the faculty, all the while holding on to the dream she had back in Worcester to create her own sound by heading up her own band, and taking control of her musical journey.
Presently, among gigs at the Long Beach Carpenter Center, Mckinney Theatre, and various clubs including Spaghettini's, Anne is touring nationally and internationally. Her 2009 release "Pretty World," received a Grammy nomination in the category "best arrangement for singer." "Pretty World" includes the music of such jazz luminaries as Keith Jarrett, Sergio Mendez, and Don Grolnick.
Carrying on in a contemporary jazz vein, Anne is soon to release her next CD - an eclectic soundscape of contemporary and brazilian jazz influences, which features originals, as well as a new take on the classic Wayne Shorter tune "Go".

-------------------------------------------

Kate MacLeod, Kat Eggleston and Duncan Phillips are on tour in support of“Lost and Found” and “Long Gone.”
What we do is similar to when my father “Utah Phillips” traveled with Jim Ringer, Mark Ross or Kate Wolf. It's a bit like a traveling folk festival, we my take turns opening up for each other or do songs in the round. It's a little different every night.-
Duncan Phillips Kate MacLeod and Kat Eggleston have performed together since 1999 and have now completed their second duo recording, Lost and Found, to be distributed by Waterbug Records. Their duo recordings supplement their individual work as roots-music songwriters and performers, but as a duo their charm and musicality transform into a sum greater than its parts.

Their new CD features original songs, traditional instrumental pieces from the British Isles, and a few surprise covers including one by the super-group ABBA.

As the son of Bruce,"Utah Phillips” Duncan Phillips began traveling on the road with his father in the winter of 2000. Utah referred to Duncan as his "road manager", but Duncan jokes that everyone knows his father couldn't be managed.
Bruce always had the dream of playing on stage together with his son, but as a kid, Duncan could never reconcile that in learning to play the guitar, he would be learning one of the very things that kept him separated from his father for so many years.
Duncan performed on stage just shortly after his dad's death in 2008.
Along with Utah's old road-worn Guild guitar, Duncan inherited the songs and stories of the people and places that his father wrote about over his forty plus years of wandering the country. In Duncan's own words: "Well, even though he may be gone, every time I'm on the stage, he is there with me and this my story, so far...

Inspired by the musical pastiches and masques of the 18th century, the Met presents an original Baroque fantasy, featuring a who's who of Baroque stars led by eminent conductor William Christie. With music by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, and others, the new libretto by Jeremy Sams combines elements of The Tempest and A Midsummer Night's Dream. David Daniels is Prospero, Joyce DiDonato is Sycorax, Danielle de Niese is Ariel, Luca Pisaroni is Caliban, and Plácido Domingo makes a special appearance as Neptune. Lisette Oropesa and Anthony Roth Costanzo also star. This dazzling production is directed and designed by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch (Satyagraha and the Met's 125th Anniversary Gala).

Robert Earl Longley, also known as Robby, is a world-class level guitarist and symphonic composer from New Orleans whose original compositions are available on nine CDs. "Diaspora" (the ninth CD) is the newest release for 2007. In addition, Robert composed two powerful soundtracks for films that screened at the Sundance Film Festival. In his concert material, Roberts jaw-dropping fingerstyle techniques on the flamenco guitar always deliver fresh, sophisticated Third Stream-like jazzy melodies within classically inspired movements rather than producing traditional flamenco music as one would expect. Besides using a wide variety of musical instruments, the guitar is present in all of Roberts compositions. Perhaps his love of the acoustic guitar is a throwback from his Andalusian ancestry on his mothers side. To be sure, Its almost as if he is not playing, but instead whatever he is feeling is coming out of the guitar.

Calmenco!
Guitarists Tony Harmon, Ray Pannell, Nathan Towne, and percussionist Johnny Sandoval are internationally recognized performers whose credits include The White House, The Oscars, The Johnny Carson Show, and movie soundtracks.
Calmenco! can be described as the "Riverdance" of guitar.  Performing original compositions and popular melodies, they integrate them with the cool sounds of a jazz guitar, a fiery flamenco guitar, and a beautiful classical guitar. They blend the musical genres of Classical, Spanish, and Latin Jazz, along with the scintillating rhythm of Latin percussion.

Incendio
INCENDIO in both Italian and Spanish means “fire” and this is fitting for a instrumental guitar group whose sound is all about energy, exploration, and passion.  At the heart of INCENDIO’s sound is the Latin or Spanish guitar, weaving elements of Middle Eastern, Celtic and Rock into their music.   The ensemble has forged a reputation for their live shows, performing over 130 shows a year since 2000, and has enjoyed worldwide recognition for their 7 CD’s and live DVD.

    Bach in the Mission
Cal Poly Early Music Ensemble, Local Professionals ?to Perform ‘Bach in the Mission’ Jan. 21

For a second year, the Cal Poly Early Music Ensemble will perform “Bach in the Mission” in Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa.

The Cal Poly student group -- with Music Department faculty members and professionals from San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties -- will perform a cantata, a motet and a double concerto for oboe and violin, all by J. S. Bach.

Early Music Ensemble Conductor Thomas Davies and Cal Poly Symphony Conductor David Arrivée will join forces for this performance.

Choral performers include 13 student members of the Early Music Ensemble and Cal Poly professors Meredith BrammeierKen Habib and Susan Azaret Davies, as well as Westmont College professors Grey Brothers andMichael Shasberger, Cuesta College faculty member Jill Anderson, and Paul Osborne, San Luis Obispo High School choral director.

Instrumental performers include Cal Poly Symphony students; university faculty members Paul Severtson, violin; Jeanne Shumway, cello; Lisa Nauful, bassoon; and David Hennessee, viola; as well as Music Department staff member Paul Woodring, organ. Also performing will be Los Angeles oboist Paul Shermanand San Luis Obispo violinist Pam Dassenko. Severtson and Dassenko are co-concertmasters for the San Luis Obispo Symphony.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our talented Cal Poly students to sit next to professional musicians and make music at a very high level,” said Davies, who will conduct the cantata and the concerto.

Arrivée will conduct the motet and will play the harpsichord in the cantata and concerto.

The works to be performed are three of Bach’s most-loved works, according to Davies. “The cantata, ‘Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimm,’ and the motet, ‘Komm, Jesu, Komm,’ come from Bach’s early years in Leipzig around 1731. The Concerto for Oboe and Violin is probably from the same period,” Davies said.

Tickets are $8 for seniors and students and $12 for the public. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office.

“Mr. Glass is a journalist but also a storyteller who filters his interviews and impressions through a distinctive literary imagination, an eccentric intelligence and a sympathetic heart.”
The New York Times

The creator of the public radio show This American Life talks about his program and how it’s put together: what makes a compelling story, where they find the amazing stories for their show, how he and his staff are trying to push broadcast journalism to do things it doesn't usually do. As part of this, Glass mixes stories from the show, live onstage, combining his narration with pre-taped quotes and music, recreating the sound of the show as the audience watches.

When things go wrong in our life we tend to regard the situation itself as the problem, but in reality whatever problems we experience come from our mind. Because of this extraordinary fact, if we change our mind we can literally change our world. By changing our mind through meditation, we can learn how to develop positive ways of viewing ourselves and the world around us. Discover the surprising causes of happiness and suffering, and how this ancient knowledge can be directly applied to our modern life.

“A funny and philosophical meditation on why error is mostly a humane, courageous and extremely desireable human trait...” The New York Times

Kathryn Schulz is a journalist, author and public speaker with a credible (if not necessarily enviable) claim to being the world’s leading wrongologist. At a moment when economic, political and religious dogmatism increasingly divide us, she calls on us to ask one of life’s most challenging questions: What if I’m wrong? She proposes a new way of looking at fallibility – one in which error is both a given and a gift that can transform our worldviews, relationships and, most profoundly, ourselves.

Keynote Lecture for 4th Annual Seed Swap

Friday, January 27 , 7pm-9:30pm, 2012
Santa Barbara Downtown Public Library Faulkner Gallery
Donation $5

Seed Saving is an ancient tradition with a lineage stretching back 12,000 years. But in less than a century's time, this once fundamental  part of the human experience has largely disappeared. The transition from rural agrarianism to urbanization has led to increasingly fewer people growing and interacting with seeds*

Bill McDorman executive director  Native Seed/SEARCH will be our Keynote speaker for the 4th Annual Seed Swap on Friday Jan 27. The tittle of his lecture will be Going to Seed.

Bill will discuss the sustainable agriculture movement and its lack of focus on the one aspect that can make it sustainable; the seeds. When did we stop saving seeds? And why?

Bill will unpack the history of how we got ourselves into this mess with a time line of events that will astound readers. From the initial USDA program at the turn of the last century that mandated citizens receive heirloom seeds to a recent government dictate that leaves biotech companies "untouchable" Bill will guide attendees through an amazing series of events that make it clear why we DON'T save seeds.

After delivering the sad facts, Bill will turn everyone on their heels with stories that inspire and instruct. He will outline some of the basic concepts involved in seed saving and show how anyone at any level should begin this journey, and begin it now before we loose anymore diversity.

People everywhere are beginning to recognize the crucial link between humanity, the crops that sustain us, and embattled seeds. We are on the cusp of a seed saving renaissance -an not a moment too soon.*

As Bill has said in an recent article in Acres Magazine in Jan 2012 "The ultimate success of the seed diversity movement rests in the reeducation and involvement of the population at large"*

Bill McDorman is executive director of Native Seed/SEARCH http://www.nativeseeds.org/ a 28 year old Southwestern seed conservation organization based in tucson AZ. He is the founder of three seed companies, including Seed Trust http://www.seedstrust.com and author of Basic Seed Saving. He has been teaching classes in wild, edible and medicinal plants and seed saving for more than 30 years.

The event takes place on Friday, January 27, 7pm - 9:30pm, at the Santa Barbara Downtown Public Library Faulkner Galley  40 E Anapamu St Santa Barbara. CA 93101 $5 donation , no reservations required. More info; (805) 962-2571, margie@sbpermaculture.org

Sowing Revolution Seed Libraries Offer Hope for Freedom of Food by Bill McDorman and Stephen Thomas Acres USA January 2012 www.acresusa.com

MORE QUOTES  from article

To restore our freedom over food, it is essential that every community have assess to a collectively owned treasure chest of seeds. Seed Libraries represent our best hope for reclaiming this independence. As an added benefit they boost regional biodiversity by encouraging the cultivation of new crop varieties adapted to local conditions. With global temperatures on the rise and financial markets plummeting , a robust network of community foodsheds to replace the shaky monolith of industrial agriculture has become imperative for human survival.

Only 4 percent of the commercial vegetables being grown in 1903 are still in cultivation today. In their place, vast fields of genetically modified corn, canola, cotton and soy now blanket the world's farmlands.multinational agribusiness like Monsanto and DuPont realized early on that control over seeds was the key to global domination of food supplies. Over the past two decades these industrial giants have aggressively swallowed up dozen of smaller seed companies in a cutthroat race for market domination.

Cal Poly’s Orchesis Dance Company presents its 42nd anniversary concert “Immersion” Jan. 27 through Feb. 4 at the Alex and Faye Spanos Theatre at Cal Poly. Contemporary choreography, live music and a new company of dancers create a high-powered performance for Cal Poly’s College of Liberal Arts Dance Program.

Evening shows are scheduled at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27 and 28, and Thursday through SaturdayFeb. 2 through 4.  A 2 p.m. matinee is scheduled Sunday, Jan. 29.

The Orchesis concert features the choreography of nationally acclaimed guest artists, Cal Poly faculty, local choreographers and selected top dance students. The dances this year embrace current dance trends as well as explore new perspectives on classic forms.

Guest choreographers include Holly Johnson, director of Ledges and Bones Dance Company based in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. Johnson was named one of Dance Magazine’s coveted “25 to Watch in 2007,” and according to the Los Angeles Times, is capable of “turning the body into a dangerous machine.”

Johnson hints that her dance for Orchesis “unites a terrain of moving bodies through space-time creating a visceral experience of shifting human emotions.”

Mike Esperanza, director of Southern California’s Bare Dance Company, presents the Orchesis Dance Company’s finale “Our Plan.” According to Orchesis Director Diana Stanton, the dance is an “uplifting celebration of human relationships and connections.” A collection of Beatles tunes performed by a live singer will accompany the piece.

Fusing heavy hip-hop vocabulary and modern dance, Seattle choreographer Markeith Wiley will present an excerpt from his evening length work, “City Council.” Wiley pursues themes of hierarchy, struggle, alliance, and the destruction of the power in this innovative blend of Breakdance, Krumping and other urban dance phenomena.

This year’s performance also includes works by faculty and local choreographers, including Diana Stanton’s “Torque,” a new ballet by Michelle Walter, and Lisa Deyo’s delightful “Plaza de la Ville,” set to the music of Carmen.

Tickets for "Immersion" are $13 for the public and $10 for students. Tickets are on sale at the Performing Arts Center ticket office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The transition from rural agrarianism to urbanization has led to increasingly fewer people growing and interacting with seeds*

Light on a Distant Hill: A Novel of the Indian West by Bill Scott

WINNER - Won the 2011 WILLA Award for Original Softcover Fiction

About the book and author:
In 1876, sixteen year old mail-order bride Ellen O'Hara sets off westward from Salina, Kansas to meet her husband-to-be, a cavalry officer stationed at Fort Walla Walla in Washington Territory. But en route, her party is attacked by Indians near Elko, Nevada. Badly wounded, she wanders off into the wilderness and disappears. She will emerge two years later, older than her age and wiser than her years, shaped and burnished in one of the great tragedies in American history.
Now she is torn between two worlds, and two men. One clings desperately to the hope she is alive. The other would have considered her a mortal enemy-until he met her.-

BILL SCOTT is a writer and speaker.  He is the author of four historical novels set in the Old West in the last half of the 19th century.  His stories are often built around actual historical events and have a common theme:  they feature strong, courageous women.  Though the stories revolve around women, these are men’s adventure stories with female protagonists—fast-paced and action-packed.  His most recent novel, Light On A Distant Hill, won the 2011 WILLA Award for Original Softcover Fiction sponsored by Women Writing the West.

Enterprises staggering in scope sweep across the land . . . cultures clash, rising and falling . . . strong, courageous women rise above all.  These are the novels of B J Scott:
The Angel Trilogy: Angel of the Gold Rush, Angel's Daughter, Legacy of Angels
Light On A Distant Hill - Winner, Original Softcover Fiction, 2011 Women Writing the West WILLA Awards

    New Work
Édouard Lock, Artistic Director and Choreographer

“[Lock’s] dancers move at a speed that seems to defy what is humanly possible.” Kommersant, Russia

“…dizzying with its high-velocity moves… a mesmerizing dance as powerful as a rock concert.” The Jerusalem Post

Édouard Lock’s newest creation has been ravishing sold-out audiences throughout its European tour. Marking the 30th anniversary of La La La Human Steps, Lock’s new piece places ballet technique in service to a precise, feverishly paced gestural language and invents an incredibly complex ballet performed by 11 virtuoso dancers. The narration deconstructs the famous Dido and Aeneas and Orpheus and Eurydice, two tragic love stories; the two operas are transmuted here into a single seamless ode. The music, by Gavin Bryars, is performed live by a quartet, evoking the well-known melodies of the operas by Purcell and Gluck.

“A specialist in the West Coast blues, [Hummel’s] a seasoned showman who knows more than a thing or two about how to please an audience.” The New Yorker

Blues harmonica icon Charlie Musselwhite joins bandleader, harp player and vocalist Mark Hummel – a blues titan in his own right and an influential force in shaping the genre – in a tribute to Chicago harp master Little Walter Jacobs. With his band The Blues Survivors, Hummel crafted his own trademark harmonica sound, a subtle combination of tone, phrasing and attack with a strong sense of swing that critics call “a slice of heaven” (Oakland Gazette) and in 1991 launched the Blues Harmonica Blowout, now an international event.

Without the wisdom that understands the true nature of things, we remain vulnerable to unhappiness and insecurity. As a result, the things we normally rely upon for support, such as relationships, possessions and enjoyments, often let us down. By cultivating Buddha's wisdom we gradually free ourselves from unhappiness and fear as we understand the true sources inner peace. This inner peace is completely reliable and liberating, and enables us to transform every aspect of our lives into our spiritual training. Join American Buddhist monk Kelsang Wangpo for this 4 week series, which combines short teachings with practical meditations. Everyone is welcome--drop in for any or all of the classes.

Mary Grace Orr

We often "take refuge" in Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha before retreats, at daylong events, in the first Sunday practice at White Heron Sangha, and during other events. What does "taking refuge" mean? In what do we take refuge? This will be a day of sitting and walking in silence, as we consider awakening and truth.

Mary Grace Orr has practiced vipassana since 1983 and, prior to that, other western contemplative practices. She worked as a therapist from 1977-1995 and was trained to teach vipassana by Jack Kornfield. She is the guiding teacher of Vipassana Santa Cruz (www.vipassanasc.org) and teaches classes and retreats in Santa Cruz, at Spirit Rock, and throughout the United States. Mary Grace also spends as much time as she can at her second home on the Big Island of Hawaii.  This retreat will be suitable for both experienced and new meditators. There will be opportunity to meet with the teacher to explore questions and practice. The retreat consists of periods of meditation instruction, silent meditation, walking meditation, group interviews and a dharma talk each day. Please take advantage of Mary Grace's generosity in coming here to be with us and providing the opportunity for guidance on our practice.

Brynn Albanese (violin)

Brynn has toured and performed world-wide sharing her exhilarating style with audiences from Boston to the Netherlands. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music, her first great musical memory was that of concertmaster for the University Orchestra on a tour to the former Soviet Union in 1987. She has also served as concertmaster and soloist for the Tanglewood Festival Orchestra, Boston Philharmonic, and as principal second and soloist of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. After seven years of living in the Netherlands and performing with various Dutch Orchestras, Brynn found herself longing to come back to California in search for personal and musical serenity. Brynn currently teaches violin and does orchestral string coaching at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and has a private teaching studio as well. She regularly presents classical recitals with piano. Brynn is a fearless musician unrestrained by a single discipline. She relishes the opportunity to discover and uncover musical and non-musical experiences in all areas of life.

He was a founding member and served as director of the Live Oak Music Festival in Santa Barbara, California. Jim Cole speaks on the Smart Grid.
SLO Soiree at Steynberg’s [1531 Monterey St., 542-9000, dh=544-5096] Sunday, January 29, 7-8 wine/cheese, 8-9 discuss

This is our first event at the Steynberg Gallery, it is a great place to have a great atmosphere and more space. We are asked NOT to bring wine, cheese and other food, Peter sells a variety of beverages. We hope to add some luster to his wonderful art and music.

Jim Cole on the Smart Grid: What is a smart electricity grid, why do we do we need one and what is the current status and potential for expanded deployment of major components in California?

Brief Summary: A conceptual description of the smart electricity grid is a modern integrated generation, transmission, distribution, customer and decision-support network, coupled with advanced communications capabilities. The smart grid gathers “real-time” information about the performance of these network subsystems and the behavior of all network participants (e.g. consumers and suppliers) and makes “timely” decisions to improve the reliability, efficiency, and economics of providing end-use electricity services. In this talk, Jim Cole will provide a basic functional description of major elements of the modern smart grid and describe why they are important for accomplishing California’s renewable energy, environmental, reliable energy supply, economic efficiency and other goals.

Speaker’s Background: Jim and his wife Norma live in the Oak Creek Commons cohousing community in Paso Robles. As a volunteer, he is actively involved in local sustainability-focused groups including Transition Towns ( http://transitionus.org/), Resilience Circles ( http://localcircles.org/) and the Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream symposium ( http://www.awakeningthedreamer.org).

In a part-time professional capacity, Jim Cole is a Senior Advisor with the UC’s California Institute for Energy and Environment (CIEE; http://uc-ciee.org ). His current Electric Grid research focuses on fostering the integration of renewable energy and improving the operational reliability and economic efficiency for California's electric transmission, distribution and customer interconnection system. As the first Director of CIEE from 1990 through July of 2002, Jim was responsible for the strategic direction of its energy efficiency and environmental R&D program.

Join Buddhist Teacher Charley DeLisle for this new series, which combines short teachings with practical meditations. Everyone is welcome--drop in for any or all of the classes.
