Straddling the lyrical and experimental, these poems conjure and connect the cosmological, the carnal, and the personal in a country - and a universe - that is gobbling itself into oblivion. But a Storm is Blowing From Paradise is in love with the universe of language - its forms, its sounds, and even its static.

Lillian-Yvonne Bertram is a graduate of the writing programs at Carnegie Mellon and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her poetry has appeared in the Harvard Review, the Mid-American Review, the Indiana Review, and other journals.

Lompoc Family Holds Dog-Walk Event to Help Bring Home Autism Service Dog

RiverPark, Lompoc. On Saturday August 4th 2012, the public is invited to attend “Wag, Walk and Roll” to help bring home Hunter’s Autism Service Dog. The family is working with Good Dog! Autism Companions- a non profit organization dedicated to helping families affected by autism obtain a specifically trained service dog for their child with autism. The family hopes to raise $10,000 for their 3 year old son’s specially trained dog. The event will feature a Doggy Costume Contest, on-site grooming by Le Paws Mobile Pet Groomers, and pledge opportunities to earn shirts, hats, and a professional doggy portrait. The Lompoc Animal Shelter will also be walking dogs who need good homes. There is a 25$ suggested donation to walk, registration starts at 9:15am.

For a child like Hunter, autism service dogs are used to provide a sense of calm, build social bridges, and encourage communication as well as for safety and independence. They are known to provide unconditional and non-judgmental companionship while improving the quality of life of the owners and their families. There is also research being done on ways a service dog helps to enhance motor skills as well as decrease undesired behaviors.

Good Dog! Autism Companions is a 501(c) (3) non-profit whose process is designed to make sure that each canine companion is perfectly matched and personally trained for your family and special child. Their mission is to be there for families starting at the inquiry stage, through the training period of both dog and family, and throughout the life of their Good Dog! You can learn more about them and how you can donate by visiting www.gooddogautismcompanions.org

Exhibition on view: August 5 – September 30, 2012

Mario Ybarra Jr.: The Tío Collection

The exhibition Mario Ybarra Jr.: The Tío Collection is a museological tribute to the artist's family (tío means uncle in Spanish) featuring objects and artifacts collected by Ybarra Jr.'s five paternal uncles, one maternal uncle, and several uncles-in-law. Considering institutional critique projects by Fred Wilson or the Museum of Jurassic Technology, Los Angeles, CA, and inspired by a recent trip to the archaeological Moesgård Museum in Højbjerg, Denmark, Ybarra Jr. deconstructs the traditional display of art and artifacts in museums and posits a space for the Chicano experience within the framework of California and US history. Using his uncles as a lens, Ybarra Jr. explores the ways his family shaped his style and outlook. The works displayed also sheds light on our innate desire to collect, create, and aestheticize the world around us.

Mario Ybarra Jr. received a MFA from University of California, Irvine and a BFA from Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, CA. Ybarra has exhibited internationally in major museums and galleries from California to Cairo, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Tate Modern, London, England; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA; and many more. In 2002, Ybarra and his wife Karla Diaz co-founded the artist-collective Slanguage, where Diaz now oversees exhibitions and programming. He is represented by Honor Fraser, Los Angeles, CA.

Bloom Projects: Annie Lapin, History =ing
Annie Lapin's artworks frequently mine from a wide swath of art historical references and search for an intersection where image and memory become another material that the viewer experiences as non-verbally as paint and canvas. However, in History =ing, the very medium represents memory: the pigment on the canvas comes from the bottom of the artist's own brush bucket, which she has not emptied for the last three years. The grey color indexes the action of these three years of painting, mixing together every color she used. Lapin removed all other references to history, allowing the color remnants of her more elaborate historical paintings to run together. History becomes abstracted through this process, and is represented through physical material, rather than image. The thick paint at the sides of these canvases frames the work, evoking notions of the decorative, but also another level of materiality.

Born in Washington, DC, Annie Lapin currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She received a MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a BA from Yale University, New Haven, CT. Lapin has recently shown at the Pasadena Museum of California Art; Grand Arts, Kansas City, MO; and Angles Gallery, Santa Monica, CA. She is represented by Honor Fraser, Los Angeles, CA.

BOOM!, an autobiographical musical comedy by Jonathan Larson, the creator of RENT.  The show will run from August 3-19, in the intimate 55-seat Stone Pine Hall at 210 So. H St. in Lompoc. Todd Harper is Directing with Musical Direction by Rachel Mello and Musical Staging by Riley Ranjo.

The autobiographical tick, tick… BOOM! takes place in early 1990 SoHo New York City.  A promising young composer finds himself with mounting anxiety just a week from his thirtieth birthday, as he has yet to write the next great American musical. As he struggles with his career, his best friend finds success, while his girlfriend of two years threatens to leave him for a simpler and more traditional life by the sea.

Director Todd Harper says, "After the incredibly successful Broadway run of Jonathan Larson's RENT, followed by an equally successful major motion picture, most people in our culture today are at least aware of, if not deeply affected by that story and its themes. However, people seem to be unaware of his earlier work: tick, tick... BOOM! reveals many of Larson's struggles in his early career and opens our eyes more widely to the bohemian lifestyle he spent in his post-college years."

tick, tick... BOOM! opens August 3rd and runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, and Sundays at 2:00pm, closing on August 19th. This production includes mature themes and language.

Tickets are $10 presale or $12 at the door. Since seating is limited to 55, tickets will be sold for specific performances and it is highly recommended that you purchase them on a presale basis. You may reserve tickets by calling 805-735-ACT1 (805-735-2281) and they will be held for you at Stone Pine Hall where you will be charged the presale price at the door. You may also purchase presale tickets from one of our local Lompoc ticket outlets: Alfie’s Fish & Chips, Lompoc Valley Chamber of Commerce, Texas Cattle Co.

Civic Theatre continues free summer fairy tales tradition with topsy turvy 'Alice'
    Contact: Richard Dresp   (805) 922-4442   actor2222@hotmail.com
Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll’s classic tale of a girl’s sojourn through a magical world, comes to life on the Santa Maria Civic Theatre (SMCT) stage for four free performances Aug. 3-5. Alice in Wonderland marks the SMCT's 19th consecutive free summer performance, and the fairy tales program has exposed thousands of Central Coast children and their families to magic of live theatre.

Director Richard Dresp and a talented cast – including Taylor Glines in the title role – will delight kids of all ages with the tale of Alice’s adventures through a wacky and delightfully nonsensical land, populated by iconic characters such as the White Rabbit (played by Alan Foster), the Caterpillar (Nancy Kunishige) and the Dodo Bird (René Lopez). Alice's topsy-turvy story is narrated by her sister Sarah, played by Angela Hutt, and the audience is invited to participate and interact with the characters as the adventure unfolds.

As Alice makes her way through Wonderland, she must use her bravery and wits to navigate the curious world around her, including the Mad Hatter's tea party and the court of the wicked Queen of Hearts (Clare Terrill).

“We're thrilled to be once again bringing free, live theatre to the children of this community," said Dresp, a veteran actor who brought his whimsical directing touch to the SMCT’s last summer fairy tales production, The Frog Prince of Spamalot.

"Alice in Wonderland allows for audience participation," said Terrill, SMCT president, "and we're happy to be entertaining the children of the Santa Maria Valley with this family-friendly production."

Alice in Wonderland marks the continuation of the SMCT's rich summer fairy tales tradition; the program has been a civic theatre mainstay since 1993. Dresp noted that many of the children who have attended summer fairy tales over the last several decades were exposed to live theatre for the first time, and "we hope to keep sharing the joy of theatre with the kids of this community for years to come."

The SMCT is located at 1660 North McClelland Street in Santa Maria. Show times are Aug. 3 at 7 p.m., Aug. 4 at 2 and 7 p.m., and Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. The summer fairy tales are open to the public at no cost thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Santa Maria Arts Counsil, the Lester B. Hayes Grant and the Breakfast Rotary. Visit www.smct.org for more details.

All ages OK, no cover charge

Songwriters At Play presents Blue Cactus Choir is the duo of Marty Atkinson and Katy Boyd (who played several of our showcases in her old duo, Boyd & Wain). Marty Atkinson's former band Cactus Choir had a tangled, but passionate, affair with the major labels (10 years signed to Atlantic Records, EMI & then Curb/Universal). Katy Boyd has recently been compared to Tom Waits, Janis Ian and Townes Van Zandt. She's a witty, charming singer songwriter making a name for herself on both sides of the Atlantic. He is a bluegrass picker who left his banjo in Mexico. This is southwestern rambles, lonesome love songs, spicy single mothers.... all delivered with a dash of Crosby, Stills and Nashville.

Katy's current solo album has been in the top 25 of the Roots Music Report Trad Country chart since the end of 2011, & her single is in the top 50 of the New Music Weekly Main Country Chart - and climbing. Dazzling reviews of Katy's solo album PAPER HEARTS are coming in fast and furious. The pair have just released their duo album Blue Cactus Choir which has already been met with great reviews. http://bluecactuschoir.com/

Guest performers on Aug. 5 include Geoff Baker, Holly Ann Phillips, and KCBX's own Rob Kimball.

Cambria’s Allied Arts Association and the Central California Museum of Art

present cutting edge photography by Central California artists Steve Dzerigian,

Ricardo Rodriguez and Kristopher Stallworth at the Allied Arts Gallery, Cambria Center for the Arts.
The Framing Vision is a display of 20 black andwhite and color photographs on view from

July 6 to August 5.

The Framing Vision was organized by the Atascadero-based Central California

Museum of Art with San Luis Obispo photographer Robert Frear serving as

curator of the exhibition.

In contrast to the everyday practice of taking pictures of people, places and

memorable personal events, contemporary fine art photographers “prowl and

stalk the world with their ‘art-eyes’ wide open,” says Robert Frear, curator of The

Framing Vision. He believes their main task is “to return our world to us with fresh

and startling perspectives, uncovering unseen realities or creating new and

deeper ways of perceiving and understanding. Such a practice transcends mere

documentation and composing pleasant vistas.”

The three Central California artists in The Framing Vision have distinct but

complimentary strategies to “re-vision” the world around them.

Kristopher Stallworth, Bakersfield, is showing selections from his Everywhere/Nowhere

series, an exploration of generic shopping malls, industrial zones, parking lots,

and construction sites. He draws out of these seemingly drab placeless environments

“fractions of sublime beauty,” as well as surprisingly rich colors, transforming them

by seeing in them the artful that is not visible from everyday life.

Ricardo Rodriguez, Ventura, believes that a good photograph is energized by the

interplay between the subject matter and the viewer, not merely a passive gaze

upon the subject. In his Re-Frame series of black and white photographs, the

artist has placed a monumental rectangular frame in various bleak landscapes

and digitally repeated it in a cascade of receding perspective. The result is a

tour-de-force of illusionism, as well as an unsettling of our perceptions.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Steve Dzerigian, Fresno, abandoned studies in motion picture production

and philosophy in 1971 to pursue a career in fine art still photography. He is

showing vertical triple compositions from his series, Sense of Place, featuring

ascending, approaching, and descending views of historical and religious

sites taken from a single position. These works of looking upward, onto and

downward symbolically frame psychological or spiritual states evoked by

Dzerigian’s experience of place.

Together, Stallworth, Rodriguez and Dzerigian are visionary innovators, questing

for, discovering, and revealing realms not yet seen, realms awaiting their

photographic response. All three are art educators. Stallworth works at Bakersfield

College; Rodriguez at Flintridge Preparatory School; and Dzerigian recently

retired from Fresno City College.

According to Gordon Fuglie, CCMA Director and Head of Curatorial Affairs, “the

CCMA is pleased to present The Framing Vision as part of our mission to educate

local audiences about the rich variety in the contemporary art of Central California.

We feel this is especially important for SLO County where art education has been cut

in the schools and college art departments are struggling to maintain their programs.”

Exhibition curator Robert Frear adds, “Our area has too few opportunities to

engage with the important trends in contemporary photography. I was pleased

that Allied Arts Association wanted to work with the CCMA, and am delighted with

the co-operation of Steve, Ricardo and Kristopher.”

A bit about the artist: Patrick is an acoustic singer/songwriter/musician specializing in Hawaiian slack key guitar, which is a traditional style which he learned from the masters of the genre in Hawaii (he is Hawaiian, himself), namely, Raymond Kane, George Kuo, his uncle Dennis Kamakahi, and Cyril Pahinui. He played Carnegie Hall in January, has won multiple awards including the Hawaiian Music Award, and last year was the first mainland artist nominated for Na Hoku Hanohano, which is Hawaiian Music's equivalent of the Grammy, which he was nominated for again this year. He has a new cd out, hence this tour. He was recently featured on NPR's "West Coast Live," on Hawaii Public Radio, and performed a televised concert in Hawaii on the program "Pakele Live."

DAY WITH CREATIVE WOMEN AT SAN LUIS OBISPO’S MISSION PLAZA, AUGUST 11TH

The 38th annual “Day with Creative Women” on  Saturday August 11th  in San Luis Obispo’s Mission Plaza celebrates women’s creativity with arts and crafts for display and sale, music and entertainment, food, and children’s activities. Proceeds from the event benefit the Women’s Community Center of San Luis Obispo County, dedicated to the empowerment of women. The free event opens at 10 AM and runs until 5 PM .

This year’s artists/vendors represent a wide variety of genres. Among them are jewelry makers glass bl, ceramicists, glass blowers, creators of wearable art (such as silk scarves, bags and clothing), and authors of books for adults and young readers who are members of SLO Nite Writers. There will also be hand-crafted body care products made from natural local herbs, oils and plants. Most of the artists participating in the event live in San Luis Obispo County, but others at the Human Kind booth are from around the world.

Performances throughout the day include:  the award winning Central Coast Celebration Chorus, an international organization of women singers celebrating the art form known as “barbershop music; Melody Klemin who plays guitar and sings original works that have been described as “contemporary folk and acoustic love harmonies with interesting melodies”; Maheyla and the Ritual,  a dynamic trio whose repertoire ranges from original progressive blues to updated versions of vintage & classic tunes with innovative arrangements, and Dance Obispo,  represented by with two groups--- the Youth Ballet (ages 6-14), and Adult Jazz. Also featured on the lineup is SLO Pokes, an all acoustic band playing an eclectic mix of bluegrass, folk and blues with three-part harmony; its members are Craig Kincaid (vocals and guitar) Tony Pires (vocals and mandolin) Sally Vedder (vocals and bass).

Several WCC programs will be helped by the sale of booths: the Pro Per Clinic, offering women and their families an opportunity to obtain legal advice at a monthly clinic, and WCC’s newest service, the BETTER Supervised Visitation Program where trained monitors allow children an opportunity to have save and secure visits with their non-custodial parent.

The event is a showcase of the creativity of women artists of every genre and with something new happening on the stage every hour, festival-goers can enjoy an entire day of art, women and song.

TOURS CENTRAL COAST in JULY and AUGUST

Gale McNeeley, Betty Faas and Chuck Osborne will bring the songs of Jacques Brel to life on stages in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and Ojai (July 21 - August 12.)

“A Jacques Brel Cabaret” opens at the Steynberg Gallery, 1531 Monterey Street in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, July 21st at 8 PM.

The show closes with a matinee at the Ojai Art Center, 113 S. Montgomery Street on Sunday, August 12th at 2 PM.

Jacques Brel, who wrote the world-famous song, “If You Go Away,” was a Belgian singer-songwriter of the, 1950‘s, 60’s and 70‘s. “Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris,” a review of his songs, has played to audiences around the world.

Jacques Brel was a major influence on David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Rod McKuen. His songs have been recorded by Ray Charles, Judy Collins, John Denver, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra and Any Williams.

Singer Gale McNeeley, has performed on Broadway, in regional theatre, in movies and on TV.  He is known locally as the creator of the political satires, “Pope the Musical” and “The Wizard of What.”  He tours America in his one-man show, “Archy & Mehitabel.”

Gale says, "In an age where the classic troubadour seems to have vanished, Jacques Brel reminds us of the need for songwriters who translate universal emotions into song."

Local musicians Betty Faas on the piano and Chuck Osborne on the accordion provide beautiful textures to Jacques Brel songs, placing them solidly in the Cabaret setting.

For the performances in San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria and Ojai, there is $10 suggested donation at the door.  There is a special ticket for the Santa Barbara benefit, which includes wine and appetizers, of $50.

    Contact: Larry McLellan   805-735-2281   LompocCivicTheatre@gmail.com
LCT is proud to present tick, tick...

Information Press Announces 22 Years of Publishing
Free SLO County Paper to host Anniversary Celebration on August 16, 2012
Donations to benefit Contributing Writer’s Surgery will be accepted

The public is invited to celebrate the 22nd Anniversary of the Information Press, a free monthly outspoken publication, on Thursday, August 16, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  The gathering will take place at 3436 Sacramento Drive Suite A, the space where unique workshops, unusual events and each monthly publication has been created for the last 17 years.  Preparing to relocate in October, this will be the last harrah for Information Press at this space.

During the free reception the past and present staff, readers and supporters will have an opportunity to meet, mingle and review past issues while enjoying appetizers and beverages.  “This is an anniversary and a reunion. Information Press has touched a lot of lives since 1991. I’d like to say thank you and bring the staff, advertisers and supporters face to face”, said Publisher, Sandra Marshall. “It would be fun to reconnect and celebrate before we launch into our next phase and move to our new location.”

This is also a time for giving.  One popular Information Press columnist, Sean Shealy, recently learned that he will need to replace his pacemaker in six months.  One of the 47 million Americans without health insurance, Shealy needs a quick solution. Information Press will be accepting donations on behalf of Shealy to help fund his crucial surgery.  Shealy will be present at this event along with other staff writers.

Sandra Marshall printed the very first issue of the Information Press on August 16, 1991 with the belief that one person can make a difference. Driven with the passion to make people aware of the personal power they have to take charge of their life, Marshall has worked on a shoe string of a budget to publish articles that educate, encourage, inspire, support and empower the reader to take action to create the world they would like to see. Over the last 22 years, Marshall has maintained the motto of the publication: “The Good of the Whole begins with the Individual.”

Information Press is a free publication distributed in San Luis Obispo County, from Nipomo to Paso Robles, to over 200 drop sites. Many drop sites are located within outdoor free paper racks, while many are located within businesses. The operation of Information Press thrives through advertising with very competitive rates; space is currently available for the September issue.

The current and past issues may be found online at www.informationpress.net, and on facebook.

Steynberg Gallery - Concerts Amid Fine Art

One of the most respected performing songwriters on the west

coast brings his unique and engaging music to The Steynberg Gallery

in SLO at 8:00 pm on Friday, August 17th .

Music fits nicely amid the paintings rooms of The Steynberg Gallery’s ever-changing exhibition of

artwork. Local and touring artists perform in this intimate concert

setting surrounded by the imagination and creativity of their peers

from the other disciplines.

The concert on August 17th will feature singer/songwriter James

Hurley, whom Folkworks Magazine calls "One of the Top Ten Live

Acoustic Male Singer-Songwriters in L.A." in a solo acoustic

performance. Hurley tours the U.S. and overseas, performing both

public and private concerts, drawing from a large catalog of diverse

material in performances that range from intimate insight to irreverent

humor and make all the stops in between.

While evidencing influences including the music of the Swing era, the

British invasion, contemporary pop and rock, and even Saturday

morning cartoons, Hurley somehow manages to remain distinctly

original and completely accessible. His songs have been featured in

independent films and on NPR, and the title track from his

release "Tempest in a teacup" spent 12 weeks at the top of Indie-

Music.com's AC chart.

Morin Brothers Automotive is hosting a Car Clinic to benefit the Prado Day Center on Saturday August 18th.
For most of us it’s easy to take for granted things like a roof over our heads, three squares, and an iPhone. Many of us, however, struggle every day with transportation needs, meals, job hunting, even the simplest things in life like getting a load of laundry done.
The Prado Day Center here in San Luis Obispo helps address these needs for many of the less fortunate in our community. Morin Brothers Automotive is having a car care clinic to benefit the Center on Saturday, August 18.
For a donation to the Prado Day Center of  22 dollars, the talented staff at Morin Brothers will perform their famous 22 point reliability inspection including checking all fluid levels, belts and hoses, tire pressure and condition, and exterior lighting and signaling.
Keeping your car on the road and making a donation to a worthy cause is a win-win situation, so call Jesse or Elena at Morin Brothers Automotive at 541-2407 to make an appointment or for more information. That’s 541-2407.

Dr. Francis Villablanca, Curator of Birds and Mammals at Cal Poly, will lead a walk in the Elfin Forest focusing on small mammals that inhabit the Forest, including the Dusky-footed Woodrat.  There are about twenty species of small mammals known to live in the Forest, but few are seen because most hunt and feed at night.  Dr. Villablanca will point out evidence that they are there, and share stories and information about the part they play in research being done at Cal Poly, and how they survive in a small wilderness like the Elfin Forest.

2:00 AM  -  3:30 PM Lompoc Civic Theatre's Musical: tick, tick... BOOM!
    Contact: Larry McLellan   805-735-2281   LompocCivicTheatre@gmail.com
LCT is proud to present tick, tick...

BOOM!reveals many of Larson's struggles in his early career and opens our eyes more widely to the bohemian lifestyle he spent in his post-college years."

tick, tick... BOOM! opens August 3rd and runs Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, and Sundays at 2:00pm, closing on August 19th.

Santa Fe based alt pop duo, GoGoSnapRadio is playing Linnaea's on Tuesday, August 21st at 7pm.

Jeremy Bleich- (casio cz101, boss 303 sampler, glockenspiel, vocals, guitar, trash can lid, bass drum and found objects) and Sarah-Jane Moody- (lead vocals, metals, bells, found objects) make up the Santa Fe based duo GoGoSnapRadio.   The music is a lyrical exploration that fuses odd metered pop with electronic and percussive timbres.  Playing several instruments at once, the two orchestrate an eclectic blend of sound that invokes a trashy and honest tenderness.  Bleich's background in classical composition and experimental music adds to Moody's rhythmic, lyrical, and sometimes gritty vocal styles as they navigate a junkyard soundscape atop the asymmetrical vehicle that is GoGoSnapRadio’s songwriting style.   Please go to www.gogosnapradio.com to hear us, see us, and get more info.

"What happens when you unite three of the best male singers in the folk realm who already revel in harmony singing? Brother Sun.” says Rich Warren, longtime host of WMFT Chicago’s Nationally Syndicated Folk Radio Show The Midnight SpecialJoe Jencks, Greg Greenwayand Pat Wictorhave made their mark as veteran touring singer-songwriters, but Brother Sunis no songwriter's round.  Warren continues, “While numerous delightful female trios harmonize, few men bond that way these days (unlike the days of the folk revival when they were the norm). Added to great voices, energy and sincerity are worthy compositions in three distinct styles that bring to mind a modern day gospel." Fusing folk, Americana, blues, pop, jazz, rock, and a cappella singing, Brother Sun is an explosion of musical diversity and harmony, in the finest of male singing traditions. Their combined musical skills make for an unforgettable experience - three rich voices blending on a well-crafted foundation of guitar, slide guitar, and piano.

The Trio’s self titled Album debuted at No. 2 on the Folk DJ Charts in June 2011 and has remained on the chart for 11 of the last 13 months.  In addition to being the No. 8 album of 2011 on FOLK-DJ,  Brother Sun made the "Best of 2011" list for over a dozen radio stations in the US, including WUMB- Boston, WFUV - NYC, and WFMT - The Midnight Special - Chicago.   They are currently on a national tour and working on their next recording with Grammy winning producer Ben Wisch.

Brother Sun’s other upcoming California performances include August 25 at the Trinity Backstage Concert Series in Santa Barbara, and August 26 at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena.

Nancy Fiske, president of the Templeton Rotary and Norm Cone, president of Paso Robles Kiwanis, are on a quest to create a coalition of North County service organizations to support ECHO homeless shelter. “All of our service organizations have special projects that help people and communities, but what we’re requesting is for all of us to come together once a year and support Long Walk Home, a walk-a-thon for the ECHO homeless shelter,” said Nancy. For the next several months, Nancy and Norm are presenting their vision to service organizations, chambers of commerce, and other civic groups. “It’s a road show,” said Nancy. “I don’t think anyone has brought all of these organizations together for an event like this in North County. We’re going to tell organizations about ECHO and why it’s so important for us to step-up and support our homeless shelter with this annual walk-a-thon.”

The walk is Saturday, August 25. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The non-competitive walk goes from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00p.m.The entrance fee for Long Walk Home will cost $35, which includes a T-shirt and five raffle tickets. Local businesses are donating prizes for the raffle drawing during lunch and a local band, “Those Guys,” is providing live music. Participants will be able to walk in teams of up to 7 or individually and raise more funds by signing-up walk sponsors. The team that raises the most wins dinner certificates to a Colby Jack’s in Atascadero and the individual who brings in the most wins an iPad. Other donation opportunites and registration forms are available at the www.echoshelter.net. Participants will also be able to tour ECHO, as well as the Children’s Resource Network trailer. Participants may bring gently used clothing to donate to the Children’s Resource Network, a nonprofit that provides clothing to homeless and at risk children.

The walk begins at ECHO, currently housed at the First Baptist Church, 6370 Atascadero Avenue, Atascadero. The walk will make its way to the Atascadero Sunken Gardens, over the E.G. Lewis bridge, down by the Galaxy Theater complex and back to ECHO. “We’ll have an Avenue of Flags at the Sunken Gardens. People will walk by the flags and banners of the organizations that support the walk and ECHO,” explained Nancy. A complimentary lunch of hot dogs and rootbeer floats (donated by A&W, Atascadero) will be served from 11:00 - 12:30 p.m.

To schedule a presentation by Nancy and Norm for your group, call Nancy Fiske at 239-2630. Long Walk Home is open to anyone who wants to help. Go to www.echoshelter.net for registration forms and other ways to donate to ECHO.

Her presence on stage—whether she wears flowers in her hair, or stuffed birds; whether she plays a toy piano or a grand piano—is an enveloping, soft darkness, impossible to ignore. Rickman's debut album, O, You Sinners, was recorded in Chicago by Mark Greenberg (Andrew Bird, Wilco) and was released in March 2012.     On Sunday, August 26, 2012 from 2-4 pm, the Neal Taylor Nature Center at Cachuma Lake will present its third 2012 Food for ThoughtSpeakers Series installment, featuring a talk entitled “Santa Ynez Valley Peoples: What the Historic Record Tells Us.” Speaker John R. Johnson, Ph.D., curator of anthropology at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History since 1986, is a specialist in California archaeology and ethnohistory.

Light refreshments and beverages will be served from 2:00 to 2:15, followed by the presentation with a question period to follow. FREE with $10.00 park admission per vehicle.

Mr. Johnson will discuss his research on Chumash marriage and family patterns, as well as the relationships between the different Chumash groups in the Santa Ynez and Santa Barbara area pre-Spanish and European period. He will highlight the archeological sites in the Cachuma Lake area as part of his presentation.

Johnson’s career has been devoted to understanding the culture and history of the Chumash Indians and their neighbors in south-central California through the study of archaeology, archival records, and interviews with contemporary Native Americans.

He has published more than 40 studies about Southern California Indians, particularly the Chumash. His work to preserve important archaeological sites and collections has been recognized formally by the Society for California Archaeology, which awarded him their Mark Harrington Award for Conservation Archaeology in 2002. Johnson also heads a team that has been investigating the earliest evidence for people in our region at the Arlington Springs Site on Santa Rosa Island.

L’Dor V’Dor (From Generation to Generation) is a multi-generational women’s Garden Party. This feel-good FUNraiser event, sponsored by the Women’s Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara is a celebration of family, honoring our roots, and growing together. This unique afternoon will include food, music, and art.

There will be entertainment for children of all ages, activity tables, cartoon portraits by Enterra, storytelling, balloon animals, and craft projects.

For the adults, guest speaker Jane Honikman (Santa Barbara County Genealogy Society and founder of PEP-Postpartum Education for Parents) will give a short talk about genealogy.
The event host will honor the founding ladies of the Federation’s Women’s Division, including Jeri Eigner, Maureen White, Leatrice Luria, Irma Jurkowitz, Betty Sanders, Ele Scher (z”l) and Gertrude Latkin (z”l).

Chairwoman Adele Rosen says, “Thirty years ago these women took a stand in the community and wanted to make a difference in supporting the various social programs in the growing Jewish community as well as supporting the many immigrants settling in Israel during the time of social pressures in their respective countries. The philosophy of l’dor v’dor, from generation to generation, is that anyone and everyone who wants to learn about their heritage, regardless of faith, should take time to ask family members about the memories and traditions of their culture.”

Music will enhance the day with Jazz Plus, and delicious refreshments for all are provided by Fresco Café and Panera Breads.

Valet parking will be provided, and the recommended attire is “hats and flats.”

Would you like to respond more effectively to conflicts in your life? Would you like to be able to remain clear-headed in moments of intensity?

Renowned NVC (NonViolent Communication) trainer John Kinyon shows you how at a rare weekend training this August 24-26 at the Sukha Wellness Center in Avila Beach.  The workshop promises to create more choice and more serenity in your relationships and in everything you do. You will explore the phenomenon of getting “triggered” and develop a deeper awareness of your own habits in relation to conflict. Kinyon requests that you to bring any type of conflict to the workshop. One session will be devoted to conflicts in organizational settings.

The Mediate Your Life workshop will teach:
  • how to stay clear-headed in conflict by being present to the instinct to fight-flight-freeze
  • how to prepare yourself for navigating difficult conversations
  • how to give empathy as a means for building understanding and personal resilience
  • how to use these skills to turn conflicts into opportunities for connection

A Bay Area resident, Kinyon is excited for the opportunity to teach a workshop in San Luis Obispo with local mediator Joan Judson as his assistant.  “We have used the phrase "Mediate Your Life" a lot over the years and I love how it captures what is at the heart of our trainings. Our mission is to help you learn — and benefit from — the approach and skills of mediation within your own life, whether or not you aspire to formally mediate conflict between others.”

Kinyon and Judson considered many different locations before settling on the Sukha Wellness Center as the site of the event. Judson says,“‘Sukha’ means ‘good space’ and that’s so fitting, because the Center exudes this beautiful energy. From the moment you enter, it feels sacred, peaceful, and calm. I believe it’s an ideal setting for the workshop.”
