Meditative Touch led by Edward Espe Brown

To cultivate mindfulness is to be aware without judgment or directive. To touch with mindfulness is to share this practice with others. We will discuss and practice mindfulness in conjunction with touch and discover experientially how judgment, helping, fixing, diagnosing, and correcting all get in the way. We'll see if we can touch the boundless realm of non-duality: not good, not bad; no right, no wrong.

Edward Espe Brown began practicing Zen in 1965 and was ordained as a priest in 1971 by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, founder of San Francisco Zen Center.  Edward has done extensive Vipassana practice since 1985, written four cookbooks and co-authored Greens Cookbook.  He also editedNot Always So, a collection of Suzuki Roshi's lectures.  Edwardhas studied hands-on healing, hand writing change, yoga and Chi Gung and their relation to Zen.   He leads meditation retreats and classes on these topics throughout the United States and Europe.  Edward was featured in the 2007 filmHow to Cook Your Life, a critically acclaimed documentary directed by Doris Dörrie.

GROVER BEACH – The topics of a Tuesday (Sept. 13) public meeting about proposed changes to South County Area Transit Routes 23 and 24 will focus on decreasing transfer and wait times throughout the Five Cities and discontinuing some service in south Shell Beach.

All feedback from the 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. meeting at Ramona Garden Park's Community Room (993 Ramona Avenue) is also scheduled to be discussed at the upcoming SCAT Board of Directors meeting in October.

Additional items to open to public comment include streamlining Route 23 so it's more accessible and convenient for area ridership. Input is also suggested on tentative plans for augmented service to the railroad/dunes area in Oceano and discontinuing Route 24's stop at Dinosaur Caves Park in Shell Beach. The park is already served by route 21.

SCAT, which is managed by the Regional Transit Authority, plans to set up booths at transit centers and or events during the next few weeks. Please see slorta.org for more details.

All proposed changes were recommended by the South County Area Transit Plan last year.

RTA is a JPA (Joint Powers Authority) in San Luis Obispo County that operates bus service which connects cities throughout San Luis Obispo County (and beyond) including Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Grover Beach, Morro Bay, Paso Robles, Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo and more.

Most comfortable with a harmonica in his pocket and a piano nearby, Los Angeles singer-songwriter Jakob Martin was hailed by one reviewer as “revolutionizing” acoustic music. On his new EP and third studio recording "Leave the Light On", Jakob showcases his distinctly down-home edge of blues harp that cuts through a blend of piano-driven pop, rock and folk. Listen to tracks here: www.jakobmartin.com

Jakob has always humbly proven himself as an artist, even when landing big supporting gigs with artists like Blues Traveler, Everclear, Glen Philips and Hellogoodbye. At age three he sang his original song “Where Can I Get Raw Pizza?” with a nylon-stringed guitar his mom gave him. But the road hasn’t always been so bright; in 2004 Jakob lost his mother unexpectedly to breast cancer and less than two weeks later one of his best friends and band mates was killed in an accident. “Oddly enough, I’ve gained a lot of perspective, strength, and optimism from the experience, and a sense of aliveness I wasn’t capable of reaching before that,” says Jakob. On "Leave The Light On", it’s clear that this deeply personal songwriter never puts out a song that doesn’t have a whole lot of him and at least a little bit of hope in it, regardless of what it’s about.

Songwriters At Play holds showcases every Thursday night, 6:30-9:30 at The Porch, 22322 El Camino Real, Santa Margarita, 805-438-3376. • Is networking an important marketing tool for your type of business?
  • Which networking settings are most suitable to you and/or your business?
  • How do you determine your own networking style?
  • What is your overall and event-specific plan of action?
  • How do expectations, communication and anticipation come into play while networking?
Doris has over twenty years of hands-on experience in transforming loosely organized groups into effective, well-developed teams. Her expertise in group dynamics is the result of extensive work in education, theatre arts production, event planning, corporate and private operations management, non-profit executive management and financial services. Court Street Summer Jazz Continues SATURDAY, September 17, 2011, Noon to 3PM!

Come by Sephora and Pottery Barn in SLO for Week 9 of Court Street Summer Jazz, a free 10 week jazz music series in San Luis Obispo!

This week:
RED SKUNK JIPZEE SWING BAND
HOT and HAUNTING

The RedSkunk Jipzee Swing Band puts together a truly authentic vintage-style sound that draws from Django Reinhardt, 30’s
European Jazz, and American roots traditions. The band has just finished recording their 3rd studio album, Hot and Haunting, and this CD is HOT OFF THE PRESS in time for this special Court Street Summer Jazz series closing concert.

Quotes:
"It is thrilling to see such talented young people carry the torch for the Hot Swing Jazz Genre."
Louis Ortega - Grammy Award Winner

"RedSkunk sounds like Django Reinhardt embodied in the spirit of a 20 year old Redheaded Spitfire."
Glen Starkey, Entertainment Editor - New Times SLO

"You should have heard their version of "Bei Mir Bist du Schoen"... or their version of anything else they played EVERYTHING else they played. The dancers went wild!"
Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society

"Count me in as a huge fan of Red Skunk Jipzee Swing Band. There is no other musical group in the area quite like Molly and the gang. They capture the music of a bygone era, while making it all their own with mesmerizing vocals and first-rate musicianship."
Dave Congalton, Radio Talk Show Host - Down Home Radio, KVEC 920 AM

In light of this new recording, they are preparing their live act around the album theme; a sharp contrast between the care-free hot swing of the 30’s, and a powerful and haunting sound.

The Red Skunk Jipzee Swing Band performed at Live Oak Festival both in 2010 and 2011. According to Neal Losey, DJ of Morning Cup of Jazz at KCBX "were the #1 requested act to return again for 2012" -- come find out why audiences are raving about the Red Skunk Jipzee Swing Band - simply put - the RED SKUNK JIPZEE SWING BAND's music is enjoyable, lyrics sassy, and energy is pure FUN, FUN, FUN!!!

Come join us from NOON to 3PM on the Court Street Terrace above Banana Republic by Pottery Barn near Osos and Higuera in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Local performer Dennis Headrick draws upon his years of theatrical experience with Lompoc and Santa Maria Civic Theatres, as well as his Cabaret performance experience with professional Cabaret star, Maggie Worsdale.  "Dennis has great stage presence.  He has a way of drawing the audience in with his patter and has a sensibility when delivering the old standards that we all recognize and love," Worsdale said.

"I grew up in the wrong decade," states Headrick.  "Since childhood I've had an affinity for the music from the turn of the last century through the 1940s and 50s.  That period marked the most prolific period for America's great composers and lyricists who created the unforgettable tunes that comprise the "Great American Songbook."  Those musical geniuses to whom I pay homage in this show, created a musical legacy that needs to be preserved.  In my small way I hope to carry on the tradition and keep that legacy alive."

ABOUT:  Take an artistic journey of original work by Picasso, Modigliani, Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, & Renoir with hosts James and Stevenett.  See unknown portraits of Max Jacob, Marie Laurencin, Apollinaire, Dufy, Picasso and many other historic masters through the eyes and works of their secret muse, American born Gaston Longchamp. Longchamp, at age four, was hiding under the Parisian society café tables in the early 1900’s, listening to the conversations of poets, artists and anarchists, smelling the perfume of the great Sarah Bernhardt & Suzanne Valadon, and at age seven cleaning Renoir’s brushes and later hanging out with the Picasso “bande” at the Bateau Lavoir. Original works exhibited, including historic & intimate illustrated letters, articles and photographs including one letter from the hand of Leonardo da Vinci. This is a one-time exhibition lasting only three days.

History of Painters is a hopeful, melodic band led by two songwriters who together strive to create genuine, heartfelt Alternative/Folk music. They put the truth and their hearts in every song they write and are dedicated to making honest music that makes a difference. Moved by artists such as Sigur Ros, Coldplay and Simon and Garfunkel, Josh Cody and Justin Hooper are best friends since high school, who chose their band name "because back when we were poor, struggling college students we both took a job as door-to-door paint salesmen." They've played many of our showcases, and now take the headlining spot at the Porch. Sample their music here: www.reverbnation.com/historyofpainters

Successful Collaboration: Six Keys to Understanding What it Takes
Presented by: Delia Horwitz, Entrepreneur and Co-Author of Collaboration Soup: A Six-Step Recipe for Co-Creative Meetings and Other Conversations

Top business owners agree that collaboration and communication skills are some of the most needed assets for successful business. We know entrepreneurs tend to think solo and may not turn to collaboration as their first strategy. However, the solutions to the most pressing or complex challenges often involve conversations with others. Learn strategies for a different kind of conversation - one that draws out and combines the wisdom of your associates, vendors, or employees and creates greater business results together.

Delia Horwitz has had extensive experience consulting and facilitating with hundreds of groups in a wide variety of circumstances, beginning in the late 1970’s. Her projects include strategic planning with non-profit Boards of Directors, teambuilding with small and large corporations, goal setting with City Councils, corporate culture work with Fortune 500 senior leadership teams, and visioning with community stakeholders.
She also co-founded and served for three years as Executive Director of Leadership Santa Barbara County. In addition to partnering with Paula on Collaboration Soup, Delia owns and is the principal of Business Relationship Consultants. She is also the author of The Achieving Agreement Workbook: Managing Your Internal and External Conflicts and Letters from My Future Self: Musings of a Mid-Life Seeker

The Cal Poly Landscape Architecture Department is sponsoring a lecture by Make Lakeman and Marisha Auerbach Friday, September 23rd, at 5:30 pm on campus in the Berg Gallery (Building 5, room 105). The public is invited to attend.

Lakeman is the founder of the City Repair Project, among other world-changing initiatives. Auerbach is a practitioner and lecturer on permaculture who has collaborated with the City Repair Project.

City Repair is an organization comprised mostly of volunteers, whose mission is to educate and inspire people to "build community by creatively transforming public space into neighborhood gathering places."

The organization is best known for its community interventions, or "intersection repair" happenings, which are events that work to reclaim, for one day, residential street intersections as public plazas and gathering spaces. These efforts were born out of a desire to create stronger community ties in neighborhoods and highlight the lack of public spaces that are available within our physical environment. These events, which started with one intersection in Portland, Oregon, are now a nationwide and even international phenomenon.

The virtuosic and super-creative jazz pianist Misha Piatigorsky is no stranger to JazzFest, but you’ve never seen – or heard – him quite like this! The Russian born Piatigorsky fled from behind the Cold War-era Iron Curtain and moved with his family to New Jersey. It didn’t take long for this classical pianist to morph into one of the most innovative musical artists on the international scene, playing everything from Brazilian music with guitarist Freddie Bryant to straight-up jazz with Joe Lovano and Jon Faddis. His current obsession is cranking out music under the name of Sketchy Black Dog, a piano trio with strings that is dedicated to classic rock tunes by the likes of Bowie, Zeppelin and Hendrix. A compelling melodicist with a gift for unusual harmonics, Piatigorsky takes these familiar songs to strange and wonderful places. He performs with Chris Wabich drums, Neil Swainson bass, Cassia Streb viola, Muge Buyukcelen violin, Tori Lindsay violin and Noelle Crabtree cello. www.sketchyblackdog.com

Together Green – Act Today to Shape Tomorrow!  Saturday, Sept 24th 9am to 1pm.

Join us for this important milestone marking the beginning of restoration efforts on the new addition to the Sweet Springs Nature Preserve in Los Osos. Be among the first to help rescue this imperiled coastal habitat from invasive weeds, so that our native flora and fauna can thrive here once again. Everyone who looks forward to being able to enjoy an extended stroll through the preserve and a chance to revel in a spectacular view of the bay, Morro Rock and the sand spit needs to do their part. Just think of all of the special places that we enjoy today that are only there for us because farsighted people made the effort to save them and provide access to the public. This is our chance to leave something very special to those who will come after us.

After some introductory remarks by community leaders, we will provide an overview of the proposed improvements including trails, boardwalk, interpretive signage and a viewing platform as we tour the site. Volunteers will then help pull veldt grass and other invasive weeds in preparation for planting at a later date. Everyone will be rewarded for their efforts with plenty of nourishing food and drink. A few lucky volunteers will also walk away with free raffle prizes, such as tee shirts, caps, reusable bags and more. Bring gloves, trowels and shovels, if you can (but don’t worry if you can’t-we’ll loan you ours). Wear layers, sturdy shoes, hat & sunscreen. RSVP & more info: 239-3928 or mcas@morrocoastaudubon.org

If you're curious about meditation and its healing properties and want to
unwind from the daily stresses of life, then come to the Atascadero Library
on Saturday, Sept 24th, from 11PM  to 12:30 PM.

Ruth Cherry, a clinical psychologist in private practice in San Luis Obispo,
will present an Introduction to Meditation class at the Atascadero Library.

This Introduction to Meditation class, which is designed for adults, is
free.  It will be held in the Atascadero Library's Martin Polin Community
Room.  Sign-ups are not required, but space is limited. For more
information, please call the Reference Desk at 805-461-6162.

Ruth Cherry's interest lies with healing. In thirty-five years doing
psychotherapy, she has learned that the unconscious is the basis for
healing. Healing happens by experiencing, and imagery is the language of the
unconscious.

Ruth Cherry is the author of a number of books dealing with topics of the
unconscious, spiritual fiction and meditation. Her book, "Meditation for
Skeptics," introduces the reader to meditation in psychological terms
without any traditional or religious overtones.  Based on her own
experience, the reader learns to follow her inner-world's direction.

Currently, Ruth is committed to teaching meditation and leading guided
meditation groups. The commitment to meditate involves practicing
co-creation and partnership with Life.  Passion follows naturally.

“Venice Lost” Gordon Snider

About the book:
Robert Grey is an ordinary man caught in extraordinary circumstances. He is about to “walk the plank” into middle age, and he has traveled to Venice, Italy, with his wife, Rachel, to resuscitate himself and his marriage. Venice is where he came of age twenty-seven years ago, and he hopes returning there will quiet the demons clamoring inside his head. But when he visits his old hotel, he tumbles through time and returns to the Venice of his youth. Rachel has disappeared, and his Euros and credit cards are useless.

All seems lost until he meets Lucrezia Vicentino and her family and embarks on a series of thrilling and frightening adventures. He attends secret festivals sponsored by the Vicentinos for the elite families of Venice. He helps Lucrezia face the jealousies of an ex-lover and the threats of a rival family that wants to gain control of the festivals. And he tumbles through time again, to the 17th or 18th century, where he makes a remarkable friendship and faces life-changing challenges.

He manages to return to Lucrezia’s world, but he cannot find his way back to Rachel’s, and the more he becomes involved with Lucrezia and her family, the less likely it seems that he ever will. Then, the spell-binding world Robert has entered turns violent, and he must run for his life.

This was followed by The Separatist (2007) and The Hypnotist (2009). All were published by Helm Publishing and have received enthusiastic reviews. Venice Lost is his fourth novel.

As an expression of cultural joy, you can’t top an Irish wake. And what is a wake but a celebration—a toast of appreciation—an expression of love—and a damn good party?  So when eight top Bay Area musicians realized they shared as deep a love for the songs of the Grateful Dead as they did for traditional Celtic tunes, some brand-new music sprang up and started partying.

First Celtic All-Star Grateful Dead Jam Band."This marks the beginning of an era of music that I think is the most important, wonderfullest thing to happen to Grateful Dead music since Jerry died. I haven’t heard anything that portrays the spirit — not even coming from the Grateful Dead members — that came close to realizing the kindness of Jerry Garcia and the spirit of the Grateful Dead."

An exhibition of the new paintings and photographic arts of Paso Robles artist and photographer, WB Eckert, themed on the elegant Calla Lily.

What is a Rorschach Garden?

Rorschach Test – A series of inkblot images intended to evoke associations that may reveal something about ourselves that might otherwise remain hidden in our subconscious.

Garden - A pleasant place to wander among flowers and nature where we can relax and be alone with our thoughts and musings.

WB Eckert’s Rorschach Garden is a place for you wander and enjoy. Where the images may at first appear to be one thing but may actually be another. Wander through his garden and enjoy what you think you see. Like the secrets of the Calla, your own reactions and delight may surprise you.

The opening reception will be held as part of First Saturday: Wine & The Arts on the evening of Saturday, September 3, 2011 from 6 pm to 9 pm. Fine wine will be poured by Sculpterra Winery with the enchanting music by MOTM.

Special guests on 9/26 will be Susan Marie Reeves from Santa Barbara and the Central Coast’s own Tim Jackson.

The show begins at 7pm at The Spot, 116 W. Branch St., in the Village of Arroyo Grande. General admission at the door is $10. For info: 805-474-5711, www.thespotag.com  The Spot is a new performance space, located next to Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream. 6:30 – 9:30 pm     Free!

Award-winning singer, songwriter and guitarist Karen Tyler teams up with blues, jazz, and gospel duo Valerie Johnson and Al B Blue -- two big voices that blend like sister-singers, two guitars, side orders of resonator mandolin and dobro, and the bring-it-on home drive of Miss Val’s washboard playing provide an old time charm that pleases the ears and feeds the soul. Add to that knockout gospel tunes sung only the way Tyler & Johnson can sing them, and you have a little slice of heaven for dessert. www.karentyler.com, http://vjblues.com

Fee Waived Feline Adoptions at Woods Humane Society
    Contact: Steve Kragenbrink   8055439316x19   skragenbrink@woodshumane.org
Woods Humane Society encourages you to “Adopt and make it for Life”!
San Luis ObispoCountyis experiencing a significant overpopulation of felines and shelters throughout the central coast are filled to capacity with homeless adoptable felines.
In an effort to place our current feline guests into loving new homes, Woods Humane Society has waived the adoption fee for all felines for the entire month of September! Woods Humane Society prides itself on being a premier animal care facility and every adoptable feline is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped prior to going home.
By opening your heart to a Woods Cat, you not only receive a wonderful new friend, you create an opening in the shelter’s adoption program.
Woods Humane Society’s Executive Director, Cory Karpin, states: “Matching the right cat with the right adopter is our top priority and our screening process is designed to do just that.  If forgoing the adoption fee places more homeless cats into loving homes then that’s what we’ll do.”
Adopt today and give a Woods Cat the dignity, life, and love they deserve.
Did you know?
·        Having a cat reduces your blood pressure and helps prevent heart disease
·        Cats are easy to house train, especially adult cats, who are probably already house trained
·        Cats are very clean; they bathe themselves!
·        Indoor cats and spayed/neutered cats live longer lives, providing up to 20 years of companionship
·        Lots of cats need good homes; when you adopt one; you’re saving a life while providing Woods the opportunity to care for 2 additional cats entering into our facility!
If you are looking to bring a loving new companion feline into your life, please consider stopping by Woods Humane Society and spend some time getting to know all of the truly wonderful adult cats who are desperately seeking a home to call their own!
Founded in 1955, Woods Humane Society has proudly served the homeless animals of San Luis Obispo County for 56 years.
