KCBX presents The Water Tower Bucket Boys

The Red Barn Community Music Series in cooperation with KCBX Public Radio and the Live Oak Music Festival will present the high-energy indie-bluegrass music of The Water Tower Bucket Boys on Saturday July 2 at the Red Barn at South Bay Community Park in Los Osos.
The Oregon-based Water Tower Bucket Boys bring a no-holds-barred approach to bluegrass music as they share the joy and exuberance of American folk traditions with a new generation. They know the roots of the music inside and out and have stayed up through many an all-night picking party. But they were raised on raging punk music just as much as old-time fiddle, and half the band have received jazz degrees in university. As the wanderlust of youth carried them throughout Europe and across the US, their wildly eclectic vision of folk music for the 21st century was influenced just as much by psychedelic music and punk rock as it was by old 78 recordings and toothless fiddle masters. Their roots in the music run deep enough for their new tunes and songs to carry the same credo that folk music has always carried: it's real music for real people.
The Red Barn Community Music Series is a monthly concert series showcasing local, regional, and national musicians performing old time, bluegrass, swing, Celtic, blues, and other forms of acoustic roots music. The Red Barn is located at 2180 Palisades Ave in Los Osos. The show begins at 6:00 PM (new time, one hour erlier than previous shows!) with pot luck supper and pot luck band starting at 5:00 PM. No tickets are required but suggested donation is $10 at the door. BYOB and a dish to share for the pot luck supper. This show is made possible through the generous support of KCBX Public Radio and Live Oak Music Festival.

Please join Linnaea’s Cafe in presenting Northwest Storyteller Brian Rohr as we engage in one of the oldest acts known to humans: listening to the old stories as a community shared in the ways of the oral tradition.
In his performance, Drumming the Mythic Heart, Brian invites the listener to follow the sound of the drum to that complex and mythic heart of the story, where we ourselves live, breath and dance among the ancient tales. Stories may be shared from North America, Tibet, Borneo, Russia and beyond.
About Brian:
Brian Rohr is a Storyteller, Writer and Healing Arts practitioner who resides in the Pacific Northwest - a land of constant rain, Evergreen trees, mountains and the waters of the Pacific Ocean. In 2007, Brian left his home-town of Chicago and moved to Port Townsend, WA to study with Mythologist and Master Storyteller Daniel Deardorff. Since that time, he has found his gift and his home. Brian is an active Board Member of the Mythsinger Foundation and has shared myth and stories from different cultures to national and international audiences. He fully believes that the old stories are alive, vital and can inform us on how to live our lives as authentic human beings. Brian is married to his beloved Sarah.

The Red Violin: An Evening of Film and Music

Festival Mozaic (formerly the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival) and the San Luis Obispo International Film Festivalare proud to announce an evening of film and music at the Galaxy VIP Theater in Atascadero, CA.
Each year Festival Mozaic chooses a theme around which to program musical selections. This year’s theme is “Influences in Popular Culture,” and the grand finale concert will feature a performance of John Corigliano’s remarkable violin concerto from the film The Red Violin on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the Cuesta College Performing Arts Center.
The Red Violin (1999) traces the story of a violin from its maker in 17th century Italy to an auction room in modern Montreal. The violin passes from the rich to the poor, from Italy to Poland to England to China to Canada, in a series of stories involving the people who own it over a period of 300 years. Forum Lounge: Extreme Animals: An Evening with Jacob and David
Artists Jacob Ciocci and David Wightman present a mash-up of live music, video, and staged theatrics, in a choreographed array of live shredding, extreme feedback, youtube bombardment, ecstatic dance moves, and Sunday morning cartoons. The short performance works range from absurd inspirational lectures, to musings on contemporary internet culture, to introspective meditations on metal guitar shredding technique, all couched within a lo-fi, intentionally awkward 'performance art' aesthetic. Their newest performance delves into the world of tween culture and the current obsession with the infinite hall of mirrors known as "forever young".
Jacob Ciocci is an artist and current Eyebeam Fellow notably regarded as one third of the American art collective Paper Rad. He is also a prolific producer of music, installations, websites, and animations. David Wightman is completing his Ph.D. in music composition at UCSD, where he teaches courses on popular and contemporary music. Some of his many music projects include: Fortress of Amplitude, Powdered Wigs, and Chariots of Fire. Together Jacob and David form like Voltron in the high-NRG electronic music band Extreme Animals and have toured the country every summer for the past 8 years presenting their music, videos, and art.
Support for Forum Lounge is generously provided by: Andrea Lang Fund, Daniel Clark, Endevermusic Productions, the Franciscan Inn, KCSB, the Santa Barbara Independent, Santa Barbara Winery, and Therese Schweidler. Forum Lounge is presented in association with the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization’s 1st Thursday.

About Spontaneous Fantasia
Spontaneous Fantasia is the live performance work of J-Walt. He utilizes the latest in interactive computer graphics techniques to bring paintings to life. The result is a Spontaneous Fantasia, a live animated movie that unfolds before an audience. These works incorporate elements of animation, theater, dance, painting, sculpture, music, architecture, and interactive art.
“With my performances, I take literally the meaning of the word ‘animation’: making images come to life. I use my drawing skills to give directions to computer programs I’ve written. I aim to capture the sensitivity of gesture, but I also use techniques which amplify and augment the gestures. The wave of the arm or the stroke of the pen is my foundation, but the effect is much more. My creative process for these pieces is to continually shift between painting, programming, composing music, and performing. My goal is to create a wholly integrated experience for the eye, ear, and mind.”
J-Walt
J-Walt is a performer interactive designer, filmmaker, graphic artist, and composer. For two decades, he has been at the forefront of interactive art and computer performance, expanding the uses of computer animation into uncharted territories. Acoustic trio Little Black Train will perform a fun, refreshing fusion of vintage fiddle tunes, bluegrass mandolin, and songs of old-time Americana. The music of Little Black Train features a virtuosic bluegrass mandolinist, a traditional Irish fiddler, and an old-timey songster. Their music is old as the hills. From Depression-era gospel and blues to Appalachian and Celtic dance tunes, they dig up the roots of bluegrass that traveled to America from Ireland and Scotland in the 19th century. They combine new words and melodies with traditional songs from sources such as the Carter Family, Doc Boggs, and Charlie Poole. On the instrumental side, they mine fiddle tunes from archival sources in West Virginia, Ireland, and Scotland.
*Opening the show will be 12-year old fiddler Amaya Rose of Paso Robles. Amaya was first chair in the SLO Youth Symphony this past season, and performs regularly with country singer Monte Mills. She has won multiple awards in Irish dance; she runs her own business called Amaya's Chicken Ranch; and she creates custom greeting cards under the moniker Hen and Ink.

ZIP-A-DEE-DUO
June 23, 2011 - July 10, 2011
The PRAA Showroom Gallery is very proud to present "Zip-a-Dee-Duo: The Fine Art of Walt Peregoy and Frank Armitage." Two fine artists with long years of creative history. Both men have created memorable work during their years of working for Walt Disney during the times when Disney Studios was at a creative high. They helped to influence the way the baby boom generation was regularly exposed to art as entertainment in the form of TV and film.
Walt Peregoy has been referred to as "one of the most perceptive and most promising graduates" of Fernand Leger Atelier in Paris. He brought that influence to Disney. Walt Peregoy, best known for his work on 101 Dalmatians, also worked on Peter Pan, Lady & The Tramp, and many others. He lives and works in Encino, California.
Frank Armitage worked on The Jungle Book, Peter Pan and a long list of other popular animated films. He is said to be most proud of his work as a background painter in the film Sleeping Beauty. He is a well-known Paso Robles resident with his studio downtown in Studios on the Park.
Both artists have studied with Mexican muralists. Frank Armitage worked on murals with David Alfaro Siqueiros and Peregoy at the University de Bellas Artes. They have both created large and beautiful murals for the Disney theme parks. Today their paintings are in many private collections.
Zip-a-Dee-Duo, an exhibition of the art of Walt Peregoy and Frank Armitage, offers collectors an opportunity to see rare works by these artists at very special prices for a short time only.

The Central Coast Country Dance Society brings nationally known talent to the July 9 San Luis Obispo Contra Dance. Caller Susan Pertick from Reno Nevada calls throughout the west and is known for her interesting and varied dances and excellent teaching, making even complex dances simple. The Avant Gardeners, from Charlottesville Virginia, are fiddler and vocalist Laura Light, George Paul on piano and accordion, Dave Wiesler on keyboards, guitar and mandolin and Jubal Creech on percussion. The deep grooves of the band's mixture of traditional and composed tunes have contributed to the delirium of dancers at countless dances and concerts from coast to coast. Their range of performing styles from traditional swing, Celtic and old time and their facile improvisation on fiddle, piano, accordion, guitar, mandolin, and percussion have given this group their reputation as one of the premier contra and swing dance bands in the country.
Join us for this EXCELLENT dance! There's a beginners' workshop at 7:00pm, followed by the dance at 7:30. The cost is $10. It's all at the Odd Fellows Hall, 520 Dana Street, San Luis Obispo. For more info, visit www.cccds.org.

A New Documentary Film by Director William Stetz, Screens at the Ventura Film Festival
July 10, 2011, 4:00pm, Ventura Beach Marriott
A Handmade Life is director William Stetz' Ventura Film Festival debut bio-documentary of Ventura County resident Rick Mecagni's journey to find and build his own place of freedom. Using found materials, recyclable and salvaged items from auctions and salvage yards, Mr. Mecagni has built a grand home of concrete and color in the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking the Pacific Ocean backdrop of Ventura County. This 34 minute film screens on Sunday, July 10, 2011 in the Grand Ballroom of the Ventura Beach Marriott at 4pm. It is an inspiring look at what one person with a dream, and not much more, can accomplish. This is a story of persistence, resourcefulness and an American dream. Make the Sunday drive to Ventura spend some time at the ocean and see the film.
A Question and Answer session with the filmmakers, director William Stetz and Mr. Mecagni will follow the film. Tickets are $16 at the door.

Celebrate diverse composers who were inspired by the popular dance, song and even film of their times. Coplan's Sextet drew inspiration from popular dances like the Charleston and the classic 1931 German musical comedy film The Congress Dances. Poulenc's witty and energetic style, like a musical sponge, masterfully incorporates varied influences including circus music, jazz and Mozart. In his rollicking Quintet, Dvorak drew on polular dances and songs from his native Bohemia.

Santa Maria Civic Theater Presents FREE Summer Fairy Tales: The Frog Prince of Spamalot

|
An enchanted world of knights, princesses and magical spells comes to life with Santa Maria Civic Theater’s (SMCT) zany and warmly-rendered production of “The Frog Prince of Spamalot,” opening July 15. A seasoned cast of local thespians, led by Weston Scott as an amphibious hero with a heart of gold, spins a tale of wonder for theater-goers of all ages during the production’s eight-show run, beginning July 15-17 and continuing July 22-24 at the SMCT at 1660 N. McClelland St. The performances are free, and doors open 30 minutes before showtime.
“The Frog Prince of Spamalot,” written by Edith Weiss and directed by local theater veteran Richard Dresp, invites the audience to hop into a mystical bog, home of a once-handsome prince who has been turned into a frog by the spell of an evil witch. The play’s web-footed protagonist, Hyronomous (Scott), must bravely venture into the kingdom of Spamalot in order to secure a kiss from his one true love.
Mistaken identities, sword fights and dinner table dances ensue as Hyronomous crosses paths with a wacky cast of characters, including pompous, poetry-spouting Sir Lancelot (Taylor Landry), SPAM- loving Spamalot matriarch Queen Bea (Clare Terrill), and Angela Hutt-Chamberlin as the scheming, swooning and tantrum-throwing Princess Gladiola. Hyronomous' story teaches a heart-felt lesson about love, loyalty, and the importance of looking past appearances to a person's true character.
“I'm thrilled to be a part of the ongoing tradition of the SMCT's free summer fairy tale production of 'The Frog Prince of Spamalot,'" said Dresp. “Come and enjoy live theater at its best – it’s a must see for young and old. Oh yes, and did I mention it’s free?”
The SMCT’s Fairy Tale Theater Program has been a tradition in Santa Maria since 1993. "It's more fun and more fulfilling than any production that I had ever been involved in," said Hutt-Chamberlin, secretary of the SMCT board and a staple of fairy tale productions since 2008. "It is so magical to see children and adults alike lining up down the block to see these free shows."
Hutt-Chamberlin said the summer shows provide the first taste many Santa Maria youngsters - and in some cases the adults in the audience as well - will have of live theater. "It is amazing to see how many children fall in love with the theater because of these productions," said Hutt-Chamberlin, noting that hundreds of kids and community members attend the productions each year, gaining invaluable exposure to the arts.
“The Frog Prince of Spamalot” opens at 7 p.m. Friday, July 15. Shows follow on July 16 at 2 and 7 p.m., July 17 at 2 p.m., July 22 at 7 p.m., July 23 at 2 and 7 p.m., and July 24 at 7 p.m. The production is made possible by support from community volunteers, the Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary, the Santa Maria Arts Council, and Altrusa International. Contact the SMCT box office at 922-4442 for more information.

Monthly Open to the Community Portraits of Survival tours

The Jewish Federation of Greater Santa Barbara has a new monthly "Open to the Community" Portraits of Survival docent-led tour. This is a rare – and diminishing - opportunity to hear about the Holocaust through the eyes of those who lived through it. As one young visitor said, "It gave me a new perspective, a new dimension to my world and I will remember it forever." The visit begins with an introduction of the exhibit and the Holocaust, followed by a short film and tour of the exhibit. We conclude with some firsthand accounts from local Holocaust survivors, who tell their fascinating stories and how they survived.
Portraits of Survival: Life Journeys During the Holocaust and Beyond, is an interactive display of portraits, narratives and archival material depicting the journey of Santa Barbara survivors and refugees before, during and after the Holocaust. The exhibit was established in 2003, and since then has developed into multi-faceted educational programs for groups of all ages and backgrounds, including educational, religious, civic and social action groups and all pockets of the community. One educator commented, "This was a powerful and moving learning experience for my class. We left the Jewish Federation with full hearts and, I believe, more open minds."
In the last few years, thousands of visitors have seen the exhibit and heard from the survivors. Most havehad a very profound reaction to this experience. Few young people have ever met a Holocaust survivor, and for many, the tour and lecture is their introduction to the Holocaust. As one parent said, "This program was so thoughtful and personal. My kids learned more in two hours than four weeks of text research." Many leave the exhibit in tears, yet filled with enthusiasm and hope that they can make a difference in their community, inspired by the survivors' stories. One student said, "I learned a lot about the dangers of discriminating against people only because of their race or religion, and that you should think of everyone as equals." Another added, "It taught me to not judge a person for any reason, and that by stopping one comment there could be a change in the world."
Upcoming "Open to the Community" monthly tours are on Fridays, 12:15-1:30 pm on the following dates:
July 15, August 12 and September 9.
RSVP is requested, but not required. For more information or to RSVP, contact Program Coordinator Corin Koren, 805-957-1115 x123 or corin@sbjf.org.

From fairy tales to music halls, these French masters took inspiration from a variety of sources. Poulenc's charming work combines French Cabaret style with Mozart influences, while Faure's incidental music for a polular play is a tender and lyrical work. The Fiery Tzigane, inspired by an all-night jam session on Gypsy melodies, is a piece de resistance of dizzying virtuosity.

A Dialogue with Ms. Dantes
“In our culture, people reject the natural process of aging and glorify the maintenance of young looking bodies. Furthermore, there is a disdain for wrinkles in our faces instead of experiencing the truth of the beauty of aging and the unfolding of human wisdom and compassion in this process.” – Ms. Dantes
We begin with a 30-minute silent meditation, followed by the dialogue that lasts about one hour. Dialogue will be followed by tea and refreshments. There is no charge. Donations gratefully accepted. For information, location, directions, and to reserve your space, please call 805-343-2582.

Witness a unique story of life, love and everything in between in this wonderful book!
After practicing medicine for over 25 years as a physician assistant, Sharon Girard is looking for a new challenge. She learns that the UK is educating PA’s of their own and bringing US PA’s overseas as a pilot project for two year contracts, until they educate enough of their own.
After leaving an unhappy relationship in the midwest and finding new love in California, she hopes that embarking on this new adventure will satisfy her love of travel and desire to see the world. Her new husband is a willing participant but being an expat in England is more than they had ever imagined. Although the British speak the same language, their culture is entirely different—the practice of medicine at times very foreign.
Sharon kept a blog, detailing their life, their frustrations and the trials of settling into the English lifestyle. a PA in the UK is a fascinating peek into the life of a new expat. Packed into one year is more travel and experiences than even Sharon and her husband had ever bargained for!

Under the direction of Cmdr. Kenneth W. Megan, the band will weave a rich tapestry of patriotic and classical works, including a wind ensemble arrangement of Aaron Copland’s aria “The Promise of Living” from the opera “The Tender Land.” Other classical pieces include Alfred Reed’s “Armenian Dances,” Morton Gould’s “Santa Fe Saga,” and Frank Ticheli’s “Wild Nights.”
In addition, the program will feature marches by John Philip Sousa, including “George Washington Bicentennial” and “Hands Across the Sea.” Soprano soloist Musician 1st Class Megan Weikleenget will sing Samuel Augustus Ward’s poignant “America, the Beautiful.” Trumpet soloists Chief Musician Gino Villarreal and Musician 1st Class Thomas Brown will perform George Bizet’s robust “Carmen Fantasia.”
The band will also play two original works for wind orchestra: Roger Nixon’s “Music of Appreciation” and Mark Camphouse’s “The Shining City,” a work for band and narrator. “The Shining City” is based on speeches made by then-President Ronald Reagan. Richard E. Wyman will conduct the band, while principal conductor Lt. Megan will provide the narration.

Chris Smither is an acclaimed acoustic roots singer-songwriter whose career spans 40 years, 12 albums, and three DVDs. His recent CD, TIME STANDS STILL, was released last fall. He tours world-wide, performing at clubs, concert halls, and festivals in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia. His songs have appeared in various films and TV shows and have been covered by Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris and Diana Krall, among others. In 2009 Chris contributed a short story to Amplified, a collection of fiction by today’s best performing songwriters, including Mary Gauthier, Robbie Fulks, Jon Langford, Maria McKee, Rhett Miller, and others.
INDEPENDENT (UK):Time Stands Stillmay be the best release of his career, full of hard-earned insights delivered in his careworn baritone drawl over an immaculately fingerpicked guitar.
NEW YORK TIMES: With a weary, well-traveled voice and a serenely intricate fingerpicking style, Mr. Smither turns the blues into songs that accept hard-won lessons and try to make peace with fate.
ASSOCIATED PRESS: With Smither, the singer-songwriter craft remains in good hands.

Michele O’Marah: Video Portraits
Los Angeles-based artist Michele O’Marah explores the effects of popular culture, deconstructing in particular Hollywood genre conventions with both reverence and criticality. Her commitment to involving the arts community as an active participant has always been an underlying element in her work. This exhibition will present a series of video portraits of artists, musicians, and friends, inspired by Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests (1964-66). The exhibition will include patterned backdrops or wallpapers for each “character.” The artist will also present a series of still photographs, so that the complete installation ultimately acts as a community portrait.
Special thanks to: Casa Magazine, Santa Barbara, CA; The James Irvine Foundation, San Francisco, CA; Santa Barbara Independent; Santa Barbara News-Press; James Van Arsdale and Kimberly Hahn, Santa Barbara, CA; and Wayne McCall & Associates, Santa Barbara, CA.
Exhibition on view: May 21 – July 17, 2011
Friday and Saturday: 11 am to 5 pm & Sunday: Noon to 5 pm
Home Show, Revisited
The reference to the community in Michele O’Marah’s solo exhibition in CAF's main gallery, Michele O'Marah:Video Portraits, provides a bridge to a public exhibition component co-curated by the artist and Miki Garcia, Executive Director. Reprising two of CAF’s most significant exhibitions, Home Show (1988) and Home Show2 (1996), the two invited 10 Los Angeles-based artists to reconsider the societal and cultural notion of “home,” by creating site-specific installations in residences throughout Santa Barbara. Artists include: Piero Golia, Evan Holloway, Bettina Hubby, Florian Morlat, Kori Newkirk, Jennifer Rochlin, Ry Rocklen, Kirsten Stoltmann, Stephanie Taylor, and Jennifer West. The homes will be open to the public on weekends throughout the run of the exhibition. Visitors to CAF will be given a map and instructions for the tour.

1:00 – 4:00 pm Free!
Making an encore appearance at Sculpterra Winery on July 17 is Nipomo-based, blues, jazz, and gospel duo Valerie Johnson and Al B Blue. It’s been said that Val and Al make music that walks right into your heart and shakes hands with your soul.
Bay area native Valerie toured Europe with the Bitburg Gospel Messengers and sang gospel and blues in the Far East. In 1998 she also sang lead on tour with the band that was made famous by Janis Joplin - Big Brother and the Holding Company. Valerie has also sung with "boogie woogie piano queen" Deanna Bogart, and the award-winning blues/gospel group, The Holmes Brothers. . For a preview, go to http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/valeriejohnson#
Al is a classically trained pianist, and back in the 50's, he formed a street corner doo-wop group in Camden, NJ, giving him his first taste of radio airplay. Later in California, he picked up the guitar, paid his dues and started playing major clubs in Los Angeles. He joined Big Black & The Congregation, an Afro-funk band, then toured the West Coast with Curtis Mayfield. For more info, go to http://vjblues.com/

In Mozart's time, a craze for Turkish culture gripped Europe. A hundred years later, it was Europe's Gypsies who captured the continental imagination. In Brahm's passionate Piano Quartet in G minor, he incorporates gypsy themes and rhythms, resulting in a masterpiece of the chamber repertoire. Bring a blanket and a picnic to enjoy on the idyllic grounds of the SLO Botanical Garden before joining the musicians inside the Pavilion for an hour-long Gypsy journey.

"I finally retired - now what?" is a free 1 1/2 hour workshop focused on the newly retired or about-to-be-retired man or woman. People often look to their work as a source of pride and self-esteem. When their work life is over, however, sometimes the reality of retirement doesn't match the anticipated fun and excitement. Instead there may be long days, lack of meaningful activity and diminished social contact. Learn how to take advantage of this new developmental stage; talk with others and share your experiences and solutions as you find meaning in your life.

Through Dvorak's beautifully evocative String Quartet in F Major, op. 96 "American", this one-hour presentation and performance looks at the influences a young America was having on composers from the "old" country. Composed in Spillville, Iowa, a Czech community that offered Dvorak a calm summer respite from his busy teaching engagement in New York, this resulting quartet is a fascinating mix of native Czech music, Native American influence and Negro spirituals.

Veteran Sierra Club conservationist and hardy outings leader, Cal French, backpacked 530 miles from the Needles area of the Colorado River to Morro Bay this spring, walking much of the way off-trail and using ultra-lite equipment. His trek across plains and desert demonstrated the need for continuous public and private conservancy land between the eastern and western boundaries of California. Come hear his stories, marvel at his photos, and gasp at some unexpected adventures, all told by a skilled raconteur.

CASA Offers Advocate Training in North County
Forty percent of all foster children live in North County yet we have a shortage of CASA volunteers in that part of our county. To recruit more volunteer advocates in North County, we will be offering training in August in Atascadero. Our goal is to train 15 new advocates to serve abused and neglected children in North County.
An Information Session is scheduled for July 21, 5:30 pm, at Paso Robles Swim and Tennis Club, 2975 Union Road (across from Barney Schwartz Park), Paso Robles.
The training will be all day, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, on August 22, 24, 26, 29 and 31 at Atascadero Bible Church. Those interested in learning more about CASA are encouraged to attend an Information Session or call CASA at 541-6542.
Volunteers must complete an application and interview before training. Interviews will begin on July 20.

The ornate Rococo style of the 18th century's visual arts and architecture are reflected in these masterpieces by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. The black thoughts Mozart was experiencing in his growing unpopularity with the Viennese public may have resulted in this symphny, only one of two he wrote in a minor key. Pieces performed this evening include Beethoven's Septet in E-flat major, Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme and Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G Minor.

Our Summer Showcase features two one-act comedies to be performed for the community free of charge the weekend of July 22-24. On four consecutive Saturday afternoons in July, the San Luis Obispo Library will be presenting films depicting dystopian futures.
“They are among the finest films of all time – not just of this genre,” said Audiovisual Librarian Steve Kinsey.
A dystopia is a futuristic society in a repressive, controlled state, often under the guise of being utopian. A dystopian society is usually portrayed in films as a planned, structured society, sometimes in decline, in which life is deliberately made miserable.
Showtime is at 2:00 p.m. on July 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd in the Library's Community Room at 995 Palm Street. Refreshments and the films are provided free of charge by the Friends of San Luis Obispo Library.

"It's difficult to know where to begin with the story of New York City bluesman Guy Davis. Accomplished and acclaimed as a musician, composer, actor, director and writer, Davis somehow makes the term multi-talented seem woefully inadequate."
Jim Musser. Icon Magazine, February 13, 1997
"Talent and Charisma....Davis performs with authority"
New York times
"Guy Davis, one of the leading lights in the contemporary retro-acoustic movement, tempers his rootsy earnestness with rock and rol passion and pop slickness...David growls the lyrics like a gristle-voiced fusion of Bob Dylon, Bruce Springstein, and Charlie Patton
Living Blues
Guy sounds as though he is in direct contact with the old masters.

PLAYHOUSE CREATURES by April De Angelis
A juicy comedy drama about the backstage lives of the first actresses allowed to perform on the London stage. A rollicking story, set in the 1670’s, when previously only men played women’s parts in drag, these five actual pioneering actresses on which the play is based faced challenges still common today, survived on their resourcefulness and caused a sensation with audiences! The 17th century has never been so much fun! Taut, hilarious and at times adult dialogue.
Preview Night Fri, June 10, at 7:30 pm. Champagne Opening Sat, June 11, at 7:30 pm, including a champagne and dessert reception. Continuing Fri and Sat, at 7:30 pm, thru April 24. Sunday Matinees on July 3, 10, 17 and 24, at 3 pm. Wine Bar Lounge. Live music on Fri. and Sat. nights.

No exploration of popular culture's influence on classical music would be complete without acknowledging the film industry in the 20th century. The haunting score for The Red Violin, a film depicting the life of a mysterious violin over the centuries, has become a modern classic. Rimsky-Korsakov was inspired by tales of the Arabian Nights and a clever slave girl whose storytelling powers save her life in Scheherazade.

Enjoy the intimacy of music written for chamber groups. The concert features both a clarinet choir and a horn choir playing music written for or transcribed for small ensembles. The clarinet family is the largest woodwind family and we feature five different types ranging from the small sopranino clarinet to the large, rumbling contrabass clarinet. And…nothing matches the noble and exciting sound of a horn ensemble performing music from the Renaissance to the present.
The concert features music from the Renaissance to contemporary and jazz. Partial program includes Mancini - The Pink Panther; Mozart - Rondo; When the Saints Go Marching In; Joplin - Rose Leaf Rag; Ravel - Pavane; and many more. Concert is Sunday, July 24 at 4:00 PM. Suggested donation is $10.00 per person.

Chi is one of our favorites -- we've featured him at several showcases, including our anniversary show last Feb. 1 at the Steynberg Gallery.
Chi is pronounced Chai, like the tea. "I wish I had a cooler story behind it all," Chi told Pat Pemberton of the Tribune in San Luis Obispo. "I have the same name as my father, whose middle name is Chichester." You can read the full interview here: http://sloblogs.thetribunenews.com/sidetracked/2010/01/07/qa-with-surfermusician-chi-mcclean/
"Something Out There", Chi's debut album released in 2009, has received steady airplay on San Luis Obispo's The Krush 92.5 FM. The San Francisco Chronicle hailed the album's "compelling vocals, masterful guitar work and, most of all, pretty smart songwriting." Chi has also racked up a number of songwriting and performance awards. More about this up-and-coming touring musician here: http://www.chimcclean.com/
Songwriters At Play showcases are held every Tuesday, 6:30-9:30pm at Kreuzberg, 870 Monterey St., San Luis Obispo CA. 805.439.2060. The showcase includes one featured act and 5-6 others playing 4-song sets. There is no cover charge. All ages are welcome. "Our goal is to ensure that all students begin college with the information they need to succeed,” said Yvonne Teniente-Cuello, chair of the college’s Counseling Department. “We pack a lot of information into these sessions. Our research tells us that those who participate in an orientation like this have much higher retention rates – meaning they stay the course and achieve their goals.”

Cambria artist C. Ann Cichowski is exhibiting a large selection of her framed origami works, representing a variety of styles from different nations and techniques. The colorful dimensional works are reflections of our natural surroundings on the coast. Cichowski minored in art at Louisiana State, and used origami as a tool in teaching math and science to gifted students. She has also trained teachers in those subjects. Summerhouse & Other Motifs: Editha Spencer Memorial Exhibition
July 14, 2011 - July 31, 2011
This retrospective exhibition of oils, watercolors, block prints, and drawings, features landscapes--or what Editha Spencer often called "place-scapes"--which explore the combination of natural forms and architecture.
Born in Oakland, California, Editha attended the University of California at Berkeley, graduating in 1943, a Phi Beta Kappa honor student with a B.A. in Art. She became Art Editor of Oak Leaf, a magazine published by the U.S. Naval Supply Depot in Oakland and Editor when it adopted a newspaper format. In 1947 she married Harold Spencer, an artist and later art history professor; together they raised four sons. Over the next 63 years they lived in Berkeley, Illinois, Massachusetts, Los Angeles, and Connecticut, finally returning to California and residence in Paso Robles. During her long career as an artist and poet, Editha produced a large body of work on a wide range of subjects and themes. She exhibited extensively--watercolors, block prints, and oils--winning many awards. Her work is represented in public and private collections from New England to California.

Playful Planet in partnership with Harmony House Yoga and Honeymoon Café are joining together to support Aid Still Required, a 501c3 corporation thatrefocuses the spotlight on people who have been left behind after natural disasters. Our Family Fun Day benefit supports a Community Garden project in New Orleans, to help grade school children who are still feeling the effects of Hurricane Katrina. The event will take place Saturday, July 30th at 911 Price Street in Pismo Beach from 3:00pm – 6:00pm. Suggested donations are $10 for adults and $5 for children, but all are welcome.
The July 30th event will feature a live version of the award-winning kids yoga program, Storyland Yoga by Playful Planet. There will also be a ‘hands-on healthy snack’ station where children will make their own version of a berry-yogurt parfait recipe from The Whole Family Cookbook with organic strawberries donated by Los Osos based Clark Valley Organic Farm. Cookbook author, Michelle Stern, will be on hand to guide the recipe process and sign her cookbook, which was recently released in April, 2011.
Local musicians, Jody Mulgrew, who is known for entertaining groups of children at schools, and, Chad Schmidt of the Wadsworth Bluff Rats will provide entertainment. In keeping with the healthy, environmentally friendly theme of the day, children will also have the opportunity to make their own ‘sea-kelp shakers’ to help keep the beat during the music.
Aid Still Required(ASR) Founders, Hunter Payne and Andrea Herz-Payne who are based in nearby Santa Monica, CA will also be in attendance for the event and available for interviews. ASR is proud to collaborate withcommunity partner, New Orleans' non-profit, Common Ground Relief, on behalf of thechildren and to support wetlands restoration. The children benefited have the opportunity to learn about the importance of healthy foods and a healthy environment, to prepare the soil and plant seeds, to nurture growing fruits and vegetables throughout the year, and then harvest their crops! Schools in New Orleans are in great need of programs for children, since the effects of Katrina have been out of the news for years, but they are still very real on the ground.

The Central Coast Country Dance Society invites you to discover contra dance at the Fifth Saturday Contra Dance on Saturday, July 30.
There's an introductory workshop at 7:00pm, then dancing from 7:30pm until 10:30pm.
The dances will be taught and called by Jean Gorrindo with live music provided by Star Thistle.
Contra dance evolved from the early English, Scottish, Irish, and French country dances which came over with the first immigrants to the USA. It is very lively and social, and very easy to learn, almost as easy as walking! You don't need to bring a partner with you, but it's lots of fun to come with a group of friends. Everyone ends up dancing with everyone at the contra dance!
Join us for this EXCELLENT dance! The cost is $9. It's all at the Odd Fellows Hall, 520 Dana Street, San Luis Obispo. For more info, visit www.cccds.org.
