    Contact: Jenny Brantlee   805.234.7279   jennyb.yogawave@gmail.com
LOCAL YOGIS "DO IT" 108 TIMES ON NEW YEAR'S DAY! Some people think it's impossible. Others think it's just weird. Whatever you might think, yogis and fitness lovers of the central coast can find out for themselves this New Year's Day as the 6th Annual YOGATHON--108 Sun Salutations in Two Hours--returns to the Morro Bay Veteran's Hall at 1:30 p.m. "It's AWESOME," is how most participants feel after they've done it. A sun salutation is a series of yoga moves done repeatedly, to promote physical health and in celebration of the return of the longer days ahead. It is a strength and flexibility building sequence that most people are surprised they can manage 108 times in one afternoon. "I didn't think I could do it," said one participant from last year, "but the energy of the group inspires you and it was over before I knew it, and I was ready to keep going!" The event is a by-donation fundraiser for Pacific Wildlife Care, who's hotline 543-WILD helps rehabilitate thousands of injured wild animals annually be re-released into our local environment. Yogathon participants are asked to bring a donation to Pacific Wildlife Care or have sponsors contribute a dime or a quarter for each sun salutation they do, and help raise money for the cause that way. All the information about the Yogathon and the fundraiser can be found at www.yogawave.us (which has a printable flier of the sun salutation sequence and a fundraiser form) and information about Pacific Wildlife Care at www.pacificwildlifecare.org The Morro Bay Veteran’s Hall is located at 209 Surf Street, off Main Street in Morro Bay, and yoga mats are provided. For more information, please contact Jenny at (805) 234-7279 or jennyb.yogawave@gmail.com. The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. and last until 3:30 p.m on New Year's Day, Saturday, January 1st, 2011. Basic instruction is provided, and people of all abilities are invited to watch, do, or try.

Meditation is not a quick fix. It is the method through which the total transformation of our lives from confusion to clarity and from suffering to contentment may occur. Meditation is a simple yet powerfully effective tool. With patience and diligence a regular practice will ensue. With courage, the wisdom to recognize and renounce what covers and clouds the mind and heart will lead to the sure reward, joy and wisdom. This course will provide information, encouragement, and support for following the wisdom path of meditation. Khedrub Zangmo has been studying and practicing Buddhism for over 25 years. Under the guidance of the highly respected meditation master Lama Gendun Rinpoche, she took monastic vows and completed two consecutive three-year retreats at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling in central France . After completing her second retreat in 1997, Khedrub lived in the women’s monastery established by Gendun Rinpoche and began teaching Buddhism in centers, schools and organizations in Europe and in the USA . At the request of Shamar Rinpoche, Khedrub moved back to the US in 2000. Khedrub is currently a resident teacher of the Pasadena Bodhi Path Center.

6:30 PM  -  9:30 PM Denmark's Ida Gard, NYC's John Schmitt at Steynberg Showcase
    Contact: Steve Key   805-204-6821   bonnien27@gmail.com
Ida Gard says her musical style is inspired by strong women. "Think Fiona Apple meets Zap Mama meets classical European music," she says.
The award-winning writer from Denmark has a wicked sense of humor too, saying she "writes only what she knows. That's why the songs on the album deal with issues like addiction, sexuality and the urge to screw things up." Judge for yourself: http://www.myspace.com/idaoestergaard .
Her touring partner John Schmitt was born and raised in Buffalo, NY, and his songs are a direct reflection of his experiences growing up there. His simple, honest approach tells stories that hit at the heart of American life. Blending a folk-meets-soul style to go along with thoughtful lyrics and images, John sings about his life in real terms. On his 2010 album "Ophelia," we see how life in the city has affected Schmitt, now a resident of Brooklyn, as he takes us along for many stories of life, love, loss, and coffee consumption. Hear tracks at http://www.myspace.com/johnschmitt .
Guest performers on Jan. 11 include Patrick Bang of the band called The Willows, and fingerstyle guitar instrumentalists Tim Pacheco and Jennifer Martin.

Eric Henderson, Virtuoso Guitarist, Will be in Morro Bay at Coalesce Bookstore.Tickets $20 (805) 772-2880 Eric plays a variety of styles and music. Below is a sample of the music he will play for us. --Spanish guitar pieces by Tarrega, Torroba, Mangore and more. --Covers of pieces by Hendrix, the Stones and others. --Flamenco Surf, the Bachiana Preludes and other original compositions. There are only a handful of artists who possess an intangible quality that allows them to reach past the boundaries of the musical style to touch our inner soul. Eric Henderson has been touching souls for many years with his unique ability to communicate with his guitar. It was clear that Eric had a calling when he first picked up the instrument at an early age. Since his mother — a classically-trained pianist — first let Eric use her guitar when he was 6 years old, playing the guitar has been Henderson’s passion. He was soon ready for his own, which he mastered so well that at 13, Eric was invited to Spain to become one of only three people to study privately with the master guitarist Andres Segovia. “The most incredible guitarist I’ve heard in years” Willie Nelson.

"The most incredible guitarist I’ve heard in years” Willie Nelson.

    Contact: Zora Shinn   (805) 350-4241   info@SYVChorale.org
Sing in the Spring with the Chorale Broadway and Opera Favorites! First Rehearsal: January 18. Do you like to sing? Can you carry a tune? Do you enjoy performing in front of live audiences? Would you like to make new friends while singing a range of music from challenging classical pieces to dynamic modern works to popular Broadway and opera favorites, all right here in the Santa Ynez Valley? If the answer to any one of these questions is YES!, then join the Santa Ynez Valley Master Chorale in rehearsals for its Spring concert series, “The Best of Broadway and Opera,” Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 29-30 and May 1, at the Church at the Crossroads in Buellton. On Tuesday, January 18, the Chorale, under the baton of music director Chris Bowman, will start rehearsals for its upcoming season of spring music, “The Best of Broadway and Opera,” at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Janin Acres. Last year, 65 singers practiced from 7:30 to 9:30 every Tuesday night in the months leading up to the performance of “Music Through the Ages” and were joined by the Chorale Orchestra at the Spring concerts. The Chorale is looking for singers of all ages, in all parts, and with all levels of singing and performance experience, from amateurs to seasoned professionals. Don’t be shy—many of the Chorale’s singers started out with no more experience than singing in their high school choruses…or even in their showers. Group auditions (you won’t have to sing alone) will be held at 7:15 the first night of rehearsal (January 18). Later in the season, the Youth Chorale will begin its rehearsals, also on Tuesday, February 22, from 6:30-7:15 p.m. and will join the Master Chorale in singing the Broadway and opera favorites. It is a nice opportunity for parents and children who enjoy singing and performing together. “I am looking forward to continuing the Chorale's mission of bringing quality musical performances to the Santa Ynez Valley throughout the coming year,” said Terryl Bunn, who succeeded Mary Jane West-Delgado as the Chorale’s new president. “We would love to recruit more male voices to join us for the spring concerts. The Broadway and opera music will be fun for everyone!” Ms. Bunn, as Youth Chorale coordinator, added, “We had 16 wonderful youth singers for our holiday concerts. We’re expecting an even bigger group of youth singers for our spring concerts!” During the recent Holiday concerts, the Chorale, Youth Chorale and Orchestra performed Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Baroque masterpiece, “Te Deum,” with Valley soloists Adam Haws and Amy Calvert. The concert also featured two world premieres, “Law of Love” and “Cavatina,” with music composed by Mr. Bowman and lyrics by Catalina McIsaac. As part of the Founder’s Day celebration, the Chorale performed at La Purisima Mission on December 8 in front of 600 appreciative audience members, a beautiful evening program set in the old Mission. In November, as it does every year, the Chorale sang traditional and patriotic American music as part of the SYV Veterans Day program held at the Solvang Veterans Memorial Hall. Coming in February, the Chorale, as a fundraiser, will offer “Singing Valentines” to sweethearts, mothers and fathers, friends and co-workers all around the Valley. On Independence Day July 4, the Chorale will perform a program of American traditional songs in Solvang, free to all. The Chorale will hold its largest fundraiser, Valley Idol, in March and April, giving amateur singers an opportunity to perform in front of family, friends and a large audience. The top three contestants will receive cash prizes, and because the Valley Idol is a fundraiser, votes may be purchased, but the official judges will have a say in the outcome. For more information, please visit our website at www.syvchorale.org; call us at 350-4241, or send an email at info@SYVChorale.org. Join us in January!

The program will begin at 7 after a general Q&A session. Long time SBMUG member Peter Worsley started a new profession as an artist painter when he retired in the mid 1990s. Today, Peter paints ordinary people doing everyday things, largely sourcing his figures from the thousands of photographs that he takes as he and his wife travel about town and further afield. Peter will show us how he uses his computers to build a retrievable database of source photographs; to modify and display selected images as guides for painting; to create another archive database of images of finished paintings; and for record keeping and marketing his paintings and other products. Everyone is welcome, but only members may enter the drawings for prizes. (You may join at the meeting for $25 per year.)    8:00 PM  -  11:00 PM Grant Langston & The Supermodels LIVE! California/Nevada Tour takes Flight on January 21st!
    Contact: Kim Grant   323-336-0500   Kim@KGMusicPress.com
There's country music, there's alt-country music and then there's Grant Langston country. Langston (an Alabama native) along with his band, The Supermodels, fuse together a mix of the California Bakersfield sound, outlaw country, a bit of rock n' roll, all while his lyrics have the tongue firmly planted in cheek. The band leans toward guitar-driven melodies and down-home arrangements mixed in with an earthy country twang that makes it a must to see them live. Their 5th Album, Stand Up Man, was released in 2009 to critical acclaim and made the Euro-Americana charts while the song, "Divorce Number One" charted on Southern Thunder Radio. Roots Highway declared that "Stand Up Man is born in this climate with a style that reminds us not only of Yoakam, but a little of every so-called new traditionalist (we can even add Marty Stuart and Buddy Miller) that since the 80’s have brought fuel to the genre: melodic and captivating songs, the main role of the guitar (that beautiful Gretsch that Langston embraces on the cover), and a beautiful voice that tells stories with a grain of irony." Grant Langston & The Supermodels have opened alongside notables Dale Watson, Lowen & Navarro and Drivin' and Cryin' and recently returned from a successful UK tour where influential roots music DJ, Bob Harris (BBC radio 2) played the song "Just Pretend You Love Me Tonight" and gave a shout-out to their tour. Grant Langston & The Supermodels are now heading to a town near you and as a bonus are taking the cost of the tickets and supersizing them. For a limited time, by emailing Langston in advance, you can buy a show ticket and choose either a t-shirt or CD to go along with that ticket (San Juan Capistrano and San Fran shows excluded).

8:00 PM Early Music Ensemble Concert: 'Bach in the Mission'
Contact: Cal Poly Music Department   805-756-2406   music@calpoly.edu
A cantata, a motet, and an orchestral suite—all by J. S. Bach—will be performed in Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Cal Poly student musicians in the Early Music Ensemble will be joined by Cal Poly faculty and professionals from San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.

Early Music Ensemble Conductor Thomas Davies and Cal Poly Symphony Conductor David Arrivée will join forces for this concert.

Choral performers include: · 14 members of the Early Music Ensemble · Cal Poly professors Meredith Brammeier, Ken Habib and Susan Azaret Davies · Westmont College (Santa Barbara) professors Grey Brothers and Michael Shasberger · Jill Anderson (Cuesta College) · Paul Osborne (San Luis Obispo High School choral director)

Instrumental performers include: · Pam Dassenko (San Luis Obispo Symphony co-concertmaster) · Students from the Cal Poly Symphony · Cal Poly faculty members Paul Severtson, violin (co-concertmaster of the San Luis Obispo Symphony); Jeanne Shumway, cello; Lisa Nauful, bassoon; and David Hennessee, viola · Los Angeles oboist Paul Sherman

“This is an incredible opportunity for our talented Cal Poly students to sit next to area professional musicians and make music at a very high level,” said Davies, who will conduct the performance.

Arrivée will share his vast experience and knowledge as the harpsichordist (continuo player).

The works to be performed are all from Bach’s early years. The cantata, “Aus der Tiefen rufe, Herr, zu dir (Out of the depths I cry to Thee, oh Lord),” and the motet, “Ich lasse dich nicht (I’ll not let Thee go),” were composed around 1708, when Bach was living and working in Mühlhausen. The “Orchestral Suite in C Major,” BWV 1066, is believed to be from his time in Cöthen (1718-1723), around the time of the “Brandenberg Concertos.”

Friday, January 28th, 2011 Steynberg Gallery The David Brothers - 8pm 1531 Monterey St San Luis Obispo California 93401 US (805) 547-0278 Price: $5. BIOGRAPHY Brothers Eric and Judd David were introduced to each other years ago by their parents. Before “The David Brothers,” the two have recorded an album of instrumental guitar duets, four rock albums, created a guitar school to pay rent, cooked burritos for thousands of people, lived/toured in a van for 16 months...basically found a way to survive together through music. Smells Like America is the debut CD featuring the two siblings singing together in harmony. The record was made casually over seven months in Banana Chicken Studios on Melrose, a small gem in the heart of L.A. All of the songs on Smells Like America were recorded live as a trio with producer/engineer Jamie Candiloro on bass. Nothing was forced, rushed or even thought about for more than an easy moment. As they approached close to twenty new tunes they decided to pull back, create an EP and share. Lyrically, the album reflects on the styles of intimate, thoughtful songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Paul Simon. Judd holds firmly to his pen and acoustic guitar while Eric approaches each song as an opportunity to try and "capture" the lyrics, whether on guitar, mandolin, harmonica or banjo. The goal of this record was good vibes and performances. Quickly, The David Brothers found themselves adding members for the live shows. Around them now sits upright bass, percussion, piano, and a third female harmony. Smells Like America will be available on itunes and CD Baby this July!     Book-signing: “Passage to Cerro Alto: A Tale of the Central California Coast” by Ken Kenyon. About the book and author: Passage to Cerro Alto is a fictional account of life on the Central California Coast in the latter part of the nineteenth century. San Luis Obispo local history blends with the mysticism and myth of the highland retreat at Cerro Alto to produce a unique tall tale. The rapid growth of the dairy industry in San Luis Obispo during the 1870’s and the outlaw West, with its saloons and churches, exists alongside the magic of the Santa Lucia Mountains and Cerro Alto. The novel is about redemption, human destiny and faith. It is also a story of love. Ken Kenyon worked as the newsroom librarian at the San Luis Obispo Tribune, where he had the opportunity to do some writing. He was also a library assistant at the Robert E. Kennedy Library at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo for nearly twenty-five years. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English at Cal Poly, and was on the editorial board of Moebius, a publication for the College Liberal Arts. He has been a writer of short stories, novels and song lyrics for over forty years.

With a stage presence that spans the full dynamic range from intimate to airborne, Roach reminds audiences that emotional expression is the hallmark of the blues. Guitarist Byl Carruthers provides additional power with a precise, modern approach that invigorates and reinterprets blues music. The band also includes Bobby Pickett on bass, Harry Cohen on keyboards, and Don Swanson on drums. Café R&B scores high on all the important criteria: authenticity, musicianship, memorability and danceableness.
