Founded in 2006, casebolt and smith are a Los Angeles-based theater duo that skirt the proverbial line between the profound and the absurd, often siding with humor and irreverence. O(h) evolves from demonstrations of what they can, can’t, and won’t do into intricate movement phrases layered with pop culture references. Speaking directly to the audience while dancing and sometimes singing, they offer honest insights into their limitations as a duet company and their fear of becoming unoriginal. The result is a fast-paced, complex and hilarious glimpse into the minds and pants of casebolt and smith.
Support for Forum Lounge 2011-2012 is generously provided by: the National Endowment for the Arts, Andrea Lang Fund, Daniel Clark, Endevermusic Productions, the Franciscan Inn, KCSB, Santa Barbara Independent, Santa Barbara Winery, and Therese Schweidler. Learn about California Native Plants
The monthly meeting of San Luis Obispo Chapter of the California Native Plant Society will be held Thursday, December 1, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at the San Luis Obispo Veteran’s Hall, 801 Grand Ave., San Luis Obispo. The featured speaker will be Daniel Gluesenkamp, Executive Director of Calflora Datebase.
The Calflora Database is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing information about California plant biodiversity for use in education, research, and conservation. Calflora is structured as a digital library.
Gluesenkamp’s talk will provide an overview of Calflora’s suite of tools, including Android and iPhone mapping apps, geotagged photo submission tools, GIS upload and display tools, and even tools for planning and tracking conservation action. Following the talk will be a discussion of upcoming projects, how these tools and information can be applied to solving growing conservation challenges, and what it will mean when we know where all California’s plants can be found.
Prior to joining Calflora, Dan worked for Audubon Canyon Ranch, leading habitat protection and restoration work across 30 properties and conducting research on the impact of invasive turkey and nitrogen deposition on vernal pools. He earned his Ph.D. in 2001 with “The ecology of native and introduced thistles,” and in 2009 ,discovered a Franciscan manzanita plant growing on a traffic island at the Golden Gate Bridge. Daniel Gluesenkamp is a founder and past president of the California Invasive Plant Council and co-founder of the Bay Area Early Detection Network (BAEDN).

This fast-paced, multi-media workshop will teach you the basics of clarifying your native genius and give you tips on how to focus more of your time on activities that make you feel strong.

WHO: Snowy Plover Docent & Intern Program
WHAT: TRAINING SESSION for DOCENT PROGRAM
WHEN: Saturday, December 3 9AM – 12:30 PM
WHERE: UCSB Campus, West Campus Conference Center @ Devereux
Slough Road at Coal Oil Point Reserve
INFO: Docent Program Coordinator, April Price
Office: 805-893-3703 copr.conservation@lifesci.ucsb.edu
WHY: Western Snowy Plover is a threatened species. Nesting on the open
sand makes them very vulnerable. Often their eggs and chicks are at risk
of being stepped on or destroyed by unknowing beach users or off leash
dogs. This is where the docents
come in, and make a difference. Docents provide a personal and friendly
contact for beach users. They promote public interest and understanding,
and in turn, dramatically increase the effectiveness of other plover/tern
management efforts at the Reserve. Once a docent, only two hours a
week is required. The docent program is credited with being the most
important aspect of the species rehabitation of Sands Beach and
subsequent nesting.
As of 2011 the Snowy Plover Program completed ten years of activity with
more than 500 nests created. During this time, the number of plovers
wintering at Coal Oil Point Reserve doubled and the number of breeding
pairs rose from none to an average of 20 pairs. The recovery of a
breeding population at the Reserve demonstrates success in protecting a
bird species that is vulnerable to urban sprawl. With research,
management, education, and the undaunted efforts of many docents &
volunteers, Sands Beach at Coal Oil Point Reserve is once again a habitat
for wildlife in harmony with its recreational use.

Quiet Morning of Art and Meditation
Step aside from the holiday hustle on Saturday, Dec. 3, to reflect on the deeper meaning of Solstice, Advent and Christmas at a Quiet Morning at St. Benedict's Episcopal Church in Los Osos. The observance from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. will include time to reflect on poetry, to sit quietly in personal meditation, and to take reflections deeper through art and journaling
Led by Bob Pelfrey, professor emeritus of art at Cuesta College, and the Rev. Dr. Caroline Hall, the session will be open to all who would like to meet with others in a time of quiet soul connection. A $10 donation is suggested to cover costs of materials and snacks. St. Benedict's is located one block south of the intersection of Clark Valley and Los Osos Valley roads. Teftt St., Wanda Snow Porter, author/illustrator of the DANA Adobe Burro Picture Books, will sign her young adult, historical novel, Spurs for José, andread an excerpt from the book at 2:30. Wanda grew up in Arroyo Grande, California riding horseback on land once part of an old Mexican rancho and learned the vaquero way of riding and training horses. As a docent for Dana Adobe, she helps children experience what it was like to brand and roundup cattle on an early California rancho. Her knowledge of horses and history inspired her write about José, a young Indian vaquero, and his exciting adventures.
On Christmas Eve in 1846, a terrible rainstorm almost devastates Fremont’s battalion as they march over the Santa Ynez Mountains during the Mexican-American War. Spurs for José brims with action and excitement as a young vaquero follows Fremont on this unforgettable adventure. It is a coming-of-age story, not just for one young Indian vaquero, but also for California, as it becomes the thirty-first state of the United States.

Celebraing Light, North County Chorus Concert

The Cuesta College North County Chorus kicks off the 2011 Holiday Season with their Winter Concert:
“Celebrating Light”
December 3 at 7:30pm & December 4 at 3pm
Atascadero United Methodist Church, 11605 El Camino Real, Atascadero, CA
Tickets $10 general, and $7 for students and seniors (65+)
Call 805-546-3195 for Ticket Reservations, (strongly recommended!)
This concert explores the “Lux Aeterna” Latin text set by composers W. A. Mozart and Morten Lauridsen: “May everlasting light shine upon them.” Even though 250 years exist between these two master composers, the settings show remarkable similarities of meditation and joy through the use of both homophonic and fugal textures.
Morten Lauridsen’s “Lux Aeterna” is a masterful choral work which is inspired by the sacred music of the late Renaissance composer Josquin des Prez to create a quite, direct and introspective meditation on Light. The composer writes, “It is my hope that this quiet meditation on Light will enrich and enlighten to lives of both performers and listeners in some way.”
Since returning from their first international tour of Ireland, The “NoCoCho” was invited to participate in the 10th Anniversary Concert of September 11 given by “Symphony in the Vines” this past September, performing W. A. Mozart’s “Requiem The two movements chosen to represent this piece in their Winter Concert are the “Lacrymosa” and the “Lux Aeterna.” Even though the “Lacrymosa” does not include text regarding light, it does emphasize the contrast of darkness which yearns for the light to come. It is also contains the last notes Mozart wrote before he died at the age of 35.
Another honor given to the chorus is that they were invited as the featured performers of the opening ceremony of the 2011 Pederewski Festival. In honor of Pederewski’s Polish heritage, the NoCoCho will perform two pieces set in his native language!
In 2010 a small group out of the NoCoCho was formed. “Frölich” is an auditioned ensemble dedicated to performing madrigal-style pieces. This concert features music of the Spanish Renaissance with harpist Jennifer Sayre. The intricate rhythms and unique harmonies of that era have delighted audiences for centuries. The songs focus on the joy of camaraderie of feasting and the beauty of music.
The North County Chorus is the first community college choral ensemble in the North County of San Luis Obispo. Founded in 2005 by Cuesta College and Cassandra Tarantino, it is a combined ensemble of student and community members ranging in ages 18-80. Devoted to promoting vocal arts through a supportive learning environment, the “NoCoCho” offers creative opportunities for singers of all ages to perform challenging music from a variety of eras, languages and styles in various choral settings including domestic and international tours. The North County Chorus champions living composers through artist-in-residence programs and performances of new choral works.

Art at the JCC is proud to announce "Santa Barbara Printmakers at the JCC" an exhibition that will run December 4, 2011-February 29, 2012. This juried show is the first time that the Bronfman Family Jewish Community Center has hosted SB Printmakers, a unique art association. The opening reception is Sunday, December 4, 2-4 pm at the BFJCC, 524 Chapala St., Santa Barbara.
"We are excited to have the Printmakers exhibit their art in a juried show," says curator Lynn Holley. "Printmaking, in all its forms, is a special process that produces distinctive and often multi-layered and textured work, all which transcends regular painting and photography."
The Santa Barbara Printmakers evolved from the Monotype Guild, founded in Santa Barbara in 1989. The small group of artists who produced one-of-a-kind hand pulled prints has become a membership organization representing over 100 artists from the greater Santa Barbara area. These artists are dedicated to promoting and producing work that uses hand and press printing techniques for the purposes of artistic exploration and expression. These include etching, monotype, woodblock, collagraph, linocut, clay, lithography and digital programming.

The Cuesta College North County Chorus kicks off the 2011 Holiday Season with their Winter Concert:

Molly's Revenge and special guest vocalist Christa Burch will be performing their annual Celtic Christmas Celebration of music, song, and dance associated with the festive season at South Bay Community Center in Los Osos on Sunday December 4, at 4:00 pm. The Rosemary Turco Irish Dancers will also be appearing at the concert.
The performance will include Christmas songs both old and new, all given a Celtic twist. There will be music from the recent Molly's Revenge release Aged Ten Years, their tenth CD, which was produced by Aaron Jones, member of Scottish supergroup Old Blind Dogs. The audience will have an opportunity to join in and sing some of their favorite carols. And the Rosemary Turco Irish dancers will surely set everyone's toes tapping.
Winterdance, a holiday CD featuring music from the show, will be available at these concerts. Ten percent of the profits from Winterdance will be donated to the ALS Foundation (Lou Gehrig's disease). The band's previous Christmas album, Yuledance, will also be on sale at the concert and has already generated over $3000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Aplastic Anaemia and MDS Foundation.
Molly's Revenge, whose lineup includes bagpipes, fiddle, whistle, guitar, mandola, and bouzouki, has toured extensively in the USA and in Australia, China and Scotland. The band is known for its unique and infectious on-stage enthusiasm. The classic combination of bagpipes, whistle, fiddle, and song, with guitar, bouzouki, and mandola accompaniment, guarantees an enjoyable experience for all fans of Scottish and Irish music. Their arrangements of traditional jigs and reels bring these dance tunes up to date with a driving, hard-edged accent that always leaves audiences shouting for more.
Guest vocalist Christa Burch possesses a singular voice: warm, supple, expressive, intimate, and instantly recognizable. Part of a vibrant new generation of American folk singers, Christa deftly marries intuitive musicianship and storytelling through song.

On December 8 in Santa Barbara, Ludovic Morlot and the BSO are joined by the distinguished American pianist Richard Goode for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25 in C, K.503. The orchestra also performs Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, which opens the program, and Bartók’s Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin, drawn from the composer’s original scandal-inducing stage work about three cash-strapped men who attempt to use the provocative dancing of their female companion to attract and steal money from passers-by. The evening concludes with the Prelude and Love-death from Wagner’s monumental music drama Tristan und Isolde, inspired, transcendental music that works its magic as effectively in the concert hall as in the opera house.

SLOfolks is happy to bring back SLIGO RAGS
Named among the top acoustic bands in LA (by Folkworks Magazine) and two-time winners of the Orange County Music Award for Best Folk Band, this dynamic ensemble presents Celtic Folk with a decidedly bluegrass attitude. Sligo Rags is taking the local and not-so-local Folk and Celtic music scenes by storm with a unique blend of eclectic musical influences. Dan Miller of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine says “These guys have it all--great vocals, lots of energy, captivating songs, well executed arrangements, and tasteful solos.” Their debut studio recording, "The Night Before the Morning After", was called "the best I've heard from a stateside band" by Celtic Beat Magazine, while their sophomore effort, “The Whiskey Never Lies,” (called “the best from the West Coast Celts in many years” by Shay Clark of the Irish-American News), was named one of the top 10 of 2007 by Folkworks. Don’t be surprised if elements of country, gypsy jazz and swing manage to sneak their way into the act as well. Award-winning flatpicking and fingerstyle guitarist David Burns (recently featured in Flatpicking Guitar Magazine), fiddler extraordinaire Michael Kelly, and world-renowned bassist Gordon Rustvold are guaranteed to fill the room and your lives with electricity. They may give you a good laugh or two along the way as well.
For summer 2011, Sligo Rags had a gig for a few weeks playing at Disneyland.

We all want the delicate balance of peace and harmony in our life and relationships. It is often hard to get all the conditions together for harmonious interactions with others, since it is hard to understand others and where they are coming from.
Using Buddhist teachings and meditation techniques, American Buddhist monk Kelsang Wangpo will lead a morning retreat on how to better understand those around us and develop more harmonious relationships.
Leave the stress of difficult relationships behind. Discover the secrets to harmony.

Second Chance Cocker Rescue (SCCR) and the Pet House have invited K-9 Placement and Assistance League, Inc. (K-9 PALS), and Cold Noses Warm Hearts, Inc., to their annual Holiday Street Fair and Adoption Event at the Pet House in the Calle Real Shopping Center in Goleta. During the event, people looking to adopt a dog this holiday season can visit the pet store to see many wonderful dogs for adoption.
The three non-profit organizations will have about 20 small, medium, and large breed dogs for adoption available to meet at the Pet House location on Saturday, December 10th from 10 am to 3 pm. Other fun features to help with promotion, outreach, and fundraising for the organizations include a bake sale, jewelry and pet item sale, strolling carolers, and a wandering Santa Claus.
"This is a fun event at Pet House and Calle Real Shopping Center that provides a wonderful opportunity to find great homes for all our dogs and to bring awareness to the community about the amazing work of these three rescue organizations" said Elizabeth Mazzetti, President and founder of Second Chance Cocker Rescue.
“We want to provide the shelter and rescue group dogs opportunities to be seen in the community," said Janelle Ward, President and founder of K-9 PALS. "People can come to see the dogs while doing their holiday shopping, learn about the organizations, and learn how to adopt a shelter or rescue dog. We really enjoy working together with other organizations and local businesses to give these deserving dogs additional opportunities to be seen and adopted into loving homes.”
Every dog that gets adopted on the day of the event will go home with a handmade fleece blanket. All the rescue groups and Animal Shelter dogs are spayed/neutered and have current vaccinations. Adoption fees for each organization vary.
Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter dog adoption fees will be discounted 50% on Saturday, December 10th. K-9 PALS generously sponsors four free dog behavior training sessions as part of the adoption for County Shelter dogs.
The Pethouse is located at 5871 Calle Real, Goleta, next to Trader Joe's, and is open from 9 am. to 7 pm. Monday through Saturday and 10 am to 6 pm on Sunday.

Coalesce Bookstore invites you a book-signing, December 10, (Saturday), 2-4 p.m.
“Chasing the Red Car” by Ellen Ruderman
About the book and author
"Chasing the Red Car brings the reader vividly into the San Fernando Valley of the 1950s and brings alive the pervasive fear and disruption that ordinary families experienced under McCarthyism." -Julia Harumi Mass, Staff Attorney, ACLU of Northern California
Transplanted from her home in the Bronx to the burgeoning San Fernando Valley of 1947, Kim LeBow is faced with trouble on every side. Her home life is rocky and emotionally unpredictable, and the McCarthy-era communist witch hunts strike all around, threatening Kim's father and even reaching into her high school. The political struggles and personal cataclysms that follow change Kim from an open and caring young girl into a political activist and educator, while leaving emotional scars that only time-and the return of the great love of her life-are able to heal. Drawing parallels between the political repression of the 1950s and the abuses of executive power after 9/11, Chasing the Red Car reminds us that all politics is personal and that the truth of George Santayana's maxim about history repeating itself can be seen all around us every day. Ellen Ruderman is a psychotherapist in Encino, California and the author of many academic publications. This is her first novel.

Experience the magic of the holidays by listening to singers from the Central Coast Children’s Choir (CCCC) perform their 18th Annual Holiday Concerts at First Presbyterian Church of Paso Robles on Saturday, December 10th at 2:00 p.m. and at United Methodist Church of San Luis Obispo on Sunday, December 11th at 6:00 p.m. CCCC singers, ages 6-17 will perform festive music that will be the perfect way to begin your Christmas season.
The concert will open with a Gregorian chant by the Concert Choir who were recently coached by the world-renowned male acapella group, Chanticleer. Inspired by songs about light, stars and candles, selections will include traditional holiday songs such as "We Three Kings" by the Boys Choir, the Debut Choir singing "O Come Little Children" and Concert Choir's lush version of "O Holy Night". Carols from France, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Latvia, a barbershop-like setting of "This Little Light of Mine", and a vocal jazz "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" will spotlight many musical styles and showcase the choir's ability to "shine". Tickets for general seating are $10, and seniors and students under the age of 12 may purchase tickets for $8. The concert is recommended for children over the age of 5. Please contact CCCC at 464-0443 for ticket reservations.
For 18 years, more than 600 families in San Luis Obispo County have benefited from our program of musical instruction and choral performance. CCCC singers have had the opportunity to sing with the San Luis Obispo Symphony, Opera SLO, Cuesta Master Chorale and the San Luis Obispo Vocal Arts Ensemble. Directors Beth Klemm, Melody Svennungsen, Dr. Thomas Davies, Anne Olson, Cassandra Tarantino and Sarah Broomell will conduct the six levels of singers, including San Luis Obispo County’s only boys choir.
New singers are accepted twice yearly in September and January and auditions for the advanced choirs are held in a friendly, supportive environment. Weekly rehearsals are scheduled during after-school hours, and include musicianship training (sight-singing, ear training, note and rhythm reading, music theory and history) plus vocal coaching to assist in developing healthy singing habits.
The Central Coast Children’s Choir is devoted to creating choral excellence, instilling values of self-discipline and commitment and building lasting friendships. Their goal is to inspire the artist within each child through the power of music. Learn more about the choir at www.centralcoastchildrenschoir.org

The last SLO contra dance of the year is Saturday December 10.
The caller will be Jean Gorrindo, and the band will be Calliope Houses.
There's an introductory workshop at 7:00pm, then dancing from 7:30pm until 10:30pm.
The cost is $9, and ages 16 and under are free.
It's all at the Odd Fellows Hall, 520 Dana Street, San Luis Obispo.
For more info, visit www.cccds.org.
Contra dance evolved from the early English, Scottish, Irish, and French country dances which came over with the first immigrants to the USA. It is very lively and social, and very easy to learn, almost as easy as walking! You don't need to bring a partner with you, but it's lots of fun to come with a group of friends. Everyone ends up dancing with everyone at the contra dance!

SLIGO RAGS returns!
In Summer 2011, Sligo Rags had a gig playing for a few weeks at Disneyland.

“Whether or not you agree with her priorities and approach, she should be applauded for raising these issues with a thoughtful, humorous and authentic voice.”TIME Magazine
In her runaway New York Times best-seller, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, Amy Chua wrote a witty, provocative and deeply personal account about the rewards — and costs — of raising her children the strict “Chinese” way. Following in the footsteps of her immigrant parents, the Yale Law School professor did not allow sleepovers, play dates, or other leisurely staples of American childhood and instead pushed her daughters to achieve. Named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, she writes: “I do believe that we in America can ask more of children than we typically do.”

On December 16, 2011, at the San Luis Botanical Garden, two local chefs, Tom Drahos and Tom Neuhaus, will demonstrate the intersection of molecular science and principles of cooking, called molecular gastronomy. Tom Drahos is the pastry chef at Windows on the Water in Morro Bay, and Tom Neuhaus is a professor emeritus from the Department of Food Science & Nutrition at Cal Poly.
The audience will taste four dishes designed to illustrate modern molecular gastronomy methods, especially spherification, gellification, and emulsification, as demonstrated in the world’s most famous restaurant, El Bulli, of Roses, Spain by its chef, Ferran Adriàn. As we work, we will discuss how scientific principles make the food we are demonstrating possible. Samples of our work will be passed out tapas-style to the audience.
ALL PROCEEDS GO TO PROJECT HOPE AND FAIRNESS, to facilitate the procurement of scales, dryness meters, and other tools for cocoa farmers in Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and Ghana. Please see the reverse to learn more about the missions of Project Hope and Fairness. Silent auction items to raise money for students to go to West Africa with Dr. Neuhaus and to add electricity to Broguhe’s sewing room (in Côte d’Ivoire).

December 17, 9:30 a.m. – What’s Underfoot? Soils!
Have you ever heard the term “Baywood Fine Sand?” It’s the name of the predominant soil in Los Osos, as well as in the Elfin Forest. It’s what you walk on when the pavement ends because all of Los Osos was once a series of sand dunes. Soil scientist Jim Brownell will describe local soils and talk about how important soils are in determining what plants will grow in them. We’ll learn how sandy soil both benefits and stresses plants that grow in Los Osos and the Elfin Forest. This is an excellent walk for gardeners.
Meet at the north end of 15th Street off of Santa Ysabel in Los Osos. Please park carefully, avoiding driveways and mailboxes. For wheelchair access, partk at the north end of 16th Street. Walks begin on the boardwalk at the end of the 15th Street path. Wear comfortable shoes, long sleeves and pants to avoid poison oak and mosquitoes. Please leave pets at home. The easy paced walks last 1-1/2 to 2 hours. This walk is sponsored by Small Wilderness Area Preservation (SWAP). For more information call (805) 528-0392.

Songwriters At Play presents Markley & Balmer. Lisa Markleywas a trombonist and jazz singer at the University of North Texas; upon graduation, she took a long hard look at what drove her musically and decided to put down her trombone and turn full-force to singing and writing songs. After music at Marlboro College, he played lead guitar for rock, jazz, and country bands, and composed for dance performance and film.
Married at the legendary folk festival in Kerrville, Texas, Markley & Balmer now tour and record together, writing "wry lyrics and melancholy melodies", says the Dallas Morning News. Sample their songs at http://www.reverbnation.com/markleyandbalmer

HOMELESS SERVICES AND OVERSIGHT COUNCIL HOSTS NATIONAL HOMELESS PERSONS’ MEMORIAL DAY VIGIL
“First Day of Winter, the Longest Night of the Year”
In remembrance of those friends and neighbors who lost their lives living without homes, the Homeless Services Oversight Council of San Luis Obispo County will be hosting a candle light vigil at the Mission Plaza in downtown San Luis Obispo from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm on Wednesday, December 21st. Wednesday December 21st is the first day of winter & the longest night of the year.
San Luis Obisporecently highlighted as the happiest city in the United States, also hosts more than 3,800 homeless residents, 17% of who served are veterans and have bravely served our country. In addition, more than 630 children slept in cars, hotels shelters or on the streets every night. These individuals and families are particularly vulnerable to overexposure to heat and cold, unprotected from unprovoked violence and hate crimes and chronic illness perpetuated by the lack of affordable and available health care. In 2010 alone, more than 1,900 people died homeless in the United States. Therefore, please show your support and empathy for the local San Luis Obispo community by lighting a candle in remembrance.
WHAT: Candle Light Vigil for National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day
WHERE: Mission Plaza, San Luis Obispo
WHEN: Wednesday, December 21st, 2011 5:30-6:30 PM
Many organizations in our County assist our friends and neighbors who are without homes. These are but a few and can all use your support: Friends of the Prado Day Center, El Camino Homeless Organization, Community Health Centers, and Food Bank Coalition of SLO County. This event is sponsored by the Homeless Services Oversight Council of SLO County, Central Coast Clergy & Laity for Justice, the San Luis Obispo Ministerial Association and the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation. Christmas is often a time that feels like it's supposed to be 100% happiness, brightness and jubilation. It also comes to us, literally, during the darkest time of the year. For many, the latter reality is much more profound than the former, and for those of us who struggle during the holidays, it is good to gather to comfort one another and open our hearts, eyes and minds to the promises--and reality--of hope and healing that indeed are profoundly present even now. This is the spirit of the "original Christmas" and one we can celebrate regardless of our religious tradition. This will be an inclusive interfaith service respectful of and open to everyone in the community.

Most people would rather die than give a speech, according to a survey reported in The Book of Lists. Fear of public speaking outranked the fear of death by a two-to-one margin! Unrealistic as this may seem, the fact remains that while many people lack the training and stamina to effectively deliver a clear thought, today’s fast-paced, technological world is in desperate need of good communicators and leaders. The person with strong communication skills has a clear advantage over tongue-tied colleagues – especially in a competitive job market. Toastmasters is the most efficient, enjoyable and affordable way of gaining great communication skills. One local club, Whitehatters Toastmasters Club of Santa Barbara has been helping members to build self confidence and communication and leadership skills since June 1, 1983.
The group has 20 members and meets every Wednesday at Santa Barbara Association of Realtors - 1415 Chapala Street (2nd floor) - Santa Barbara from 12:30-1:30pm. The club's website is http://whitehatters.freetoasthost.ws/. Guests are not required to speak, but are welcome to do so.

Make this a very special New Year's Eve by joining us for our annual mini-retrat with the Buddha of Compassion, Avalokiteshvara. We'll do three simple and beautiful 45 minute prayer sessions, with breaks in between for enjoying some tasty snacks and good conversation. This is a unique and powerful opportunity to improve our ability to care for others--the heart of spiritual practice and the source of our own happiness. No experience necessary!
You may attend any or all of the three chanted meditation sessions:
8:30 to 9:15pm
10:00 to 10:45pm
11:30 to midnight
By making requests to the Buddha of Compassion and praying for the happiness of all living beings, we will create a great store of positive energy to carry us into the New Year.
