Do you love to sing? Do you want to learn to write and play music, start gigging, or record your original songs? There will also be a Songwriting for Recording class, which will provide all the necessary steps to record. Participants will learn about tracks and how to arrange songs so that the artist’s voice is enhanced through technology. There will also be a Songwriter Rock Band and an All Girl's Rock Band where students who already play an instrument will have an opportunity to write, sing, and play in a rock band setting 1-3 songs they will perform and record. The seed of this dream sprouted on Valentine’s weekend when Emily Yurcheshen, a singer/songwriter and vocal coach, found herself dancing to Michael Morse's original rock band All Natural Ingredients in Santa Barbara. Emily and Michael discovered they shared a deep passion for music, life, and service and decided that their skills, resources and experience were complementary to partner in a business.

A healing journey around the world led Emily to discover the stories and songs in her heart. The odyssey exploded into a thriving Central Coast business, coaching artists of all ages along their musical paths. Emily has a Masters from Lewis and Clark College and has taught workshops on songwriting and creativity locally and internationally along with private guitar, piano and voice lessons. Michael has been a performer in restaurants since age 18, playing original music from Soho toHollywood. Over the last five years, Michael has deepened his relationship with music by created a rehearsal/recording and teaching space near Paseo Nuevo Mall devoted to recording original music. Since partnering with Emily, this space is now opening to the public as Music Miracles. If you’ve ever had a passion to write, play or sing music, join us this July and August for classes and witness the miracles of music manifest in your life.

The Mystery Trees are a rocking contemporary band, serving up their own gritty brand of deeply rooted American music.
They describe themselves as a roots rock and roll band. They call their music "hillbilly blues power". What do these phrases mean? It’s the music of America. It’s where black and white traditions collide, and that is the definition of rock and roll. The Mystery Trees play a range of sounds that encompass the blues, country, rockabilly and Appalachian music in one big ball because all those styles are parts of the same spectrum of America's most earthy musical culture. They become a unified genre with The Mystery Trees. These musicians grew up playing all this music without discriminating one from the other.
Progenitors of the emerging "Morro Bay Sound", the lineup includes Dorian Michael and Kenny Blackwell on guitars, Paul Olguin on bass and Bill Severance on drums. Each brings a lifetime of musical know-how to the ensemble.
The Trees are fun. They are gritty.  They strive for fine musicianship while never losing sight of the reason for having a band: to rock and roll.

At Paso Wine Centre On August 10, 2011 From 6-9pm

Paso Wine Centre will host another book/CD signing party for “Cravings, Ravings & Misbehavings: Tales of how one good girl can do a whole lotta bad things and still turn out okay” by resident Atascadero author and musician, Sharine Borslien.

Cleverly serving up humorous personal anecdotes couched in a music-themed tome, Borslien also highlights recipes for all appetites and suggests central coast wine favorites, completing the package with her original pop-rock songs to complement certain tales.

In light of successful revelatory books such as “Eat Pray Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert, “Cravings, Ravings & Misbehavings” features a suite of soul-searching escapades for readers who may not be wealthy enough to travel to Italy! Borslien introduces us to her home and family, friends and foes as she discloses details about her deep desires – and the lengths to which she will go in satisfying them.

“Pssst! Hey, media people!” whispers her antagonistic Inner Archivist. “Sharine is a boy-crazy, over-zealous fake vegetarian who handily forgets the dirty details of her life… but I’ve got ‘the bads’ on this former ‘good girl,’ right here in my basement archival crypt!” (He giggles with characteristic glee whenever exposing her quirks).

The paperback edition to be featured at the party will include the music CD for $24.99. CreateSpace is distributing the print-on-demand paperback only for $15.99. Amazon carries the Kindle edition and SmashWords hosts e-books, each for $9.99. The 17-song collection is available in MP3 download for an additional $7.99 from Amazon or PayLoadz. (Prices not including applicable tax and shipping/handling.)

The party at Paso Wine Centre will present readings by the author followed by music performance with guitarist and producer, Ron Hagadone. The event will include a raffle for prizes, small bites, and limited wine samples poured by winemakers from Pear Valley, Laraneta, and Frolicking Frog vineyards. Potential attendees are encouraged to visit the official website at:

www.CravingsRavingsMisbehavings.com

The event will take place on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 from 6-9pm for attendees 21 years of age and over, with no admission fee or required purchase. Paso Wine Centre is located at 1240 Park Street in Paso Robles, California, and offers 48 wines priced per ounce or by the bottle.

The Lompoc Museum is throwing a party to celebrate the 100 Year Anniversary of the opening of the Lompoc Carnegie Library on August 14, 1911. We invite the community to join us in celebrating this important event in Lompoc’s history. The Lompoc Carnegie was built with a $10,000 grant from industrial tycoon Andrew Carnegie. It was one of 1642 Carnegie Libraries built in the U.S. between 1889 and 1919, one of 142 built in California alone. The Lompoc Carnegie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places along with 84 other surviving California Carnegies.

Planned Activities: Live music, Bean Bag Toss, Hopscotch, Croquet, Lawn Bowling, and Children’s Craft Tables. A cake walk and special photo booth are also planned where you have a chance to win a cake and have your picture taken with Andrew and Louise Carnegie – figuratively at least!

Special Events/Attractions:

-       “Andrew Carnegie Visits Lompoc?”, an original play written by Michael Callahan based on a concept by Don Adams, and featuring members of the Lompoc Civic Theatre. Free performance at 4 p.m. in Stone Pine Hall.

-       “100 Years of Carnegie in Lompoc”, a special summer exhibit in the Museum’s Centeno Gallery. Included are documents, photographs, and memorabilia related to the Centennial of the Lompoc Carnegie Library building, now home to the Lompoc Museum. On exhibit through October 9.

Our thanks to the Santa Barbara Foundation, Lompoc Affiliate, for their generous sponsorship of this event.

Santa Barbara's Susan Marie Reeves calls her original music “Gypsy Newgrass” -- a combination of bluegrass, folk, Irish, & alternative pop/rock.  Local bluegrass fans will remember her as the lead singer of the band Wild Sage.  Lately she's appeared with an ensemble called The Honeysuckle Possums.  This spring, she celebrated the release of her 2nd solo CD, Young Heart, produced by the late, legendary multi-instrumentalist, Kenny Edwards, and evokes his trademark style – a haunting, percussive, contemporary “edge.”   Sample some tracks here-- http://susanmariereeves.bandcamp.com/

Songwriters At Play showcases are held every Tuesday, 6:30-9:30pm at Kreuzberg, 685 Higuera St., San Luis Obispo CA. 805.439.2060. Do you have certain clients or customers who always “ruin your day”- causing you a headache, anxiety or even high blood pressure? Do you give up your power to them?  Do you feel they mistreat or take advantage of you?  What are your choices in the matter?  Attend this Interactive Workshop in which this topic is explored. You will learn ways to bring more calm, consistency and control into these high maintenance situations for a more satisfying experience.
  • How do we define “High Maintenance Clients”
  • Do we serve them or tolerate them?  What is our purpose?  Is it a win or lose proposition?
  • Who has the upper hand and why?  How much is enough?
  • What actions can we take to better manage this dilemma?  Who benefits most from it?

This is a FREE event and everyone is welcome! RSVP to info@mcscorp.org or call 805-595-1357.

Peppino D'Agostino, voted "BEST ACOUSTIC GUITARIST" by readers of Guitar Player Magazine’s 2007 Reader’s Choice Awards, is not your conventional steel-string acoustic guitarist. He cannot be pinned down to a particular style and that's exactly the way this internationally acclaimed virtuoso wants it.  "I'm not just an acoustic guitar player," he said. "I want to stretch the limits of the acoustic guitar in terms of melody, harmony and rhythm, adding percussive effects while addressing those first three elements. Ultimately, my mission is to touch people in a heartfelt way both emotionally and intellectually."  A familiar performer to this area, Peppinohas been coming to play for SLOFOLKS every August for over twenty years.  Peppino D'Agostino has performed for SLOfolks for over 20 years, every August, surprising us each year with a special guest performer.

“Peppino writes wonderful guitar pieces. He's one of my favorite composers for this cranky instrument. Plus, he's a tone player. I love his sound... gets the resin and the wood."  Leo KottkeSteel String Acoustic Guitarist

Ultimately, my mission is to touch people in a heartfelt way both emotionally and intellectually."
A familiar performer to this area, Peppinohas been coming to play for SLOFOLKS every August for over twenty years.

Peppino D'Agostino has performed for SLOfolks for over 20 years, every August, surprising us each year with a special guest performer.
Joining Peppino this year at Castoro Cellars only is Jeff Campitelli

Jeff Campitelli is a drummer who is currently with Joe Satriani on many of his albums as well as when he performs live. He currently uses Drum Workshop drums and Paiste cymbals. Before Satriani's breakthrough in instrumental music he was with Joe Satriani in a band called "The SQUARES". Jeff also played with the groups "RAGE" and "BLITZ" with Tim Hall, Dave Rouse aka Ronnie Trazom, Barry Hogue and David McBurnie. Jeff also played all drums on a recording project for "METRO" (Ronnie Trazoms group in 1987). Jeff has been selected by Rolling Stone magazine as the 50th greatest drummer of all time.

Jeff, as the drummer for Joe Satriani’s band has credits on all of his albums, including the legendary Surfing with the Alien, Super Colossal and Satriani's latest release, Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock. He is also the drummer that powers the G3 Tour - keeping time for Joe and fellow guitar gods Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Sheppard and others. Jeff is endorsed by DW, Paiste, Evans, Vic Firth, and Earthworks and has been active as an educator - teaching drums for over 25 years.

An Evening of Acoustic Surf Music to Benefit DeGroot Home on August 23
The riffs are instantly recognizable – from the opening notes of “Pipeline” or “Wipeout”, you’re on a ride down memory lane with the stars of 60’s surf music. You’ll have a chance to experience the trip for yourself with a special local performance by The Duo-Tones.
The Duo-Tones are Paul Johnson, of the Belairs (“Mr Moto”) and the Surfaris (“Wipeout”) and Gil Orr of the Chantays (“Pipeline”).  These multi-talented 60’s surf music superstars will be performing an intimate acoustic show on Tuesday, August 23rd, at 7 pm, at the Oddfellows Hall, 520 Dana St, in San Luis Obispo.
You’ll be surrounded by surf ambiance – stage décor will be provided by Central Coast Surfboards. National Resophonic Guitars, the world-renowned manufacturer of resonator guitars and other instruments, will be on hand with a display, along with a “guest instrument” to be played by the performers.
This concert will also serve as a “sneak preview” of the upcoming “Surfstock” event, to be held locally this fall.

Anita Loos’s smash-hit musical comedy found its quintessential interpretation in this movie adaptation featuring Jane Russell and the positively astounding Marilyn Monroe as Lorelei Lee. In witty, campy sequences such as “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” Monroe really shines – but credit must be given to director Howard Hawks. (1953, 91 minutes)

With Portraits of Nature, she encourages viewers to "Take a moment to enjoy the sheer delight of looking closely at a flower, Stop and admire the landscape that we enjoy on the Central Coast each and every day, Gaze into the eyes of a magnificent wild animal that shares this planet that we all graciously live on, and Appreciate and attend to the beauty around us!"

"THE WOMAN IN BLACK" is one of the most authentic, gripping and acclaimed ghost story/thrillers to reach the stage, full of subtle surprises and suspense. The play is a theatrical phenomenon running for the past 24 years in London. Written by Stephen Mallatratt, from the novel by Susan Hill. The remarkably plausible story, with shades of the supernatural, tells how a London solicitor is plagued by an unsettling event in the past and in a desperate attempt to expunge feelings of unease and foreboding, he enlists the aid of an actor to help recreate the troubling event. The play is set in an old theatre, which is a perfect fit for the intimacy of the PPP.

"Most brilliantly effective spine-chiller you'll ever encounter" - London Daily Telegraph

The cast features Emma Duncan and Corbin Went, who were fascinated by seeing the West End production of the play in London. Emma beautifully portrayed Emily Dickinson in "The Belle of Amherst" in '08 at the PPP.  Corbin appeared on the PPP stage in '09 in "The Mousetrap". The director is Charles Duncan.

1:00 – 4:00 pm     Free!

Making an encore appearance at Sculpterra Winery on May 22 is award winning singer, songwriter and guitarist Karen Tyler accompanied by blues, jazz, and gospel duo Valerie Johnson and Al B Blue.

Two big voices that blend like sister-singers, two guitars, side orders of resonator mandolin and dobro, and the bring-it-on home drive of Miss Val’s washboard playing provide an old time charm that pleases the ears and feeds the soul. Add to that knockout gospel tunes sung only the way Tyler & Johnson can sing them, and you have a little slice of heaven for dessert.

2:00 PM  -  4:00 PM Andrew Beacock with Bob and Wendy
    Contact: Peter Steynberg   805-547-0278   sgallery@charter.net

"Bob and Wendy like to step outside their own music sometimes and work with their friends. Andrew Beacock is an English folk singer whose guitar playing and songs are reminiscent of the sixties British folk of Bert Jansch, Nick Drake and John Renbourn. He has been a regular at Ted Waterhouse's Big Variety Nights, has a wonderful album produced by Charles Duncan, and regularly shames locals with his understated fashion sense. Listen to Andrew athttp://www.cdbaby.com/cd/beacock.

Steynberg Gallery, which has become SLO's premier music and art venue, offers the perfect setting for an afternoon of music. The cafe will be open for fair trade coffees and teas, munchies, beer and wine."

ANDREW BEACOCK

Andrew was born in Yorkshire, England but grew up in Lincolnshire on the edge of the fens.
Like most kids in drab grey post-war England he was captivated by the American rock 'n roll of Elvis, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers etc. and played in several beat groups.
After hearing Bob Dylan's first LP he became taken by the folk revival happening throughout the UK - his heroes being Bert Jansch and the Incredible String Band. He played some of the local folk clubs before travelling to Greece and playing cafes there.
Moving to the US Andrew has made his home in California's central coast near San Luis Obispo where he plays the local folk venues.
His early folk influences show through with his unique finger style guitar playing and sensitive heartfelt, often reflective songs.
Although comparisons have been made with Nick Drake, Al Stewart and Donovan, his sound is very much his own ... listening to Andrew can transport one back forty years or so, wearing very pointy shoes!
Songs can be heard and Lyrics read at AndrewBeacock.net.

REVIEWS ETC.

LOCAL CD Pick - Andrew Beacock
Andrew's own brand of music follows the tradition of British folk. Soft vocals, sparse arrangements and a traditional flair recalls the music of Al Stewart.
Most of the songs here are originals, though they all sound traditional. Lyrically, Beacock doesn’t try to mimic Dylan, eschewing socially conscious messages for songs about growing up in England, haunted places, birds and love. Beacock is joined here by Cambrian cellist Bob Liepman and songwriter Jude Johnstone, who chips in on vocals.
SAN LUIS OBISPO TRIBUNE Patrick Pemberton.

Britain-born Andrew Beacock has taken his post-war American music dreams and brought them to the source: America. His album of thoughtful songs bear more than a passing resemblance to the work of Leonard Cohen (not to mention Nick Drake, Donovan, and Al Stewart).
SAN LUIS OBISPO NEW TIMES Glen Starkey.

Folksinger Andrew Beacock has been around the local music scene for quite a while and is a wonderful, wistful performer in the classic folk style- even opening for Jeff Beck back in England during the late sixties (and has been a huge hit at the annual Gramfest gathering)......

    Katie Boeck in concert

The Spot
116 W. Branch Street, Arroyo Grande, CA 805-474-5711

Show starts at 7:00, general admission $10 at the door

Hometown girl makes good! South County's own Katie Boeck returns from the wilds of Los Angeles for a special concert Monday, Aug. 29.  A Central Coast native, Katie is a graduate of UCLA's Ray Bolger Musical Theater program and an LA-based singer/songwriter. After graduating, Katie has spent the last year performing in numerous venues in and around Los Angeles including Room 5, The Hotel Cafe, and The House of Blues.

Katie's sound is a unique blend of genres which she has penned "soul-folk" and lands her somewhere in the middle of Joni Mitchell, Alison Krauss and Lauryn Hill. Her guitar and piano driven songs blended with her soaring melodies, and densely metaphorical lyrics evoke messages about self-empowerment, and the pain and beauty of familial and romantic love.

The concert begins at 7pm at The Spot, 116 W. Branch St., in the Village of Arroyo Grande. General admission at the door is $10.  For info: 805-474-5711, www.thespotag.com

Any families interested in becoming a host family for a high school foreign exchange student this fall? Share your life and family culture with an exceptional teen from Thailand, West Bank, Spain, Mexico, China, Sweden, Germany, Italy, and many others.

PAX Program for Academic Exchange (www.pax.org) is a fully accredited US State Dept registered non profit organization and I am the local coordinator. This year I have 18 students in the area and it has been a life changing and expanding experience for all the students, host families, school communities, and of course for my son Isaac and me. We have all made friends from around the world for life. Hosting is a great way to bring the world to you if you cannot afford to travel the world at the moment!

PAX students all speak English, have their own spending money, and full health insurance. They attend local high schools and are anywhere from 15-18 years of age. Host families provide a bed to sleep in, a place to study,  breakfast and dinner at home, and most of all, a loving family environment. Students can share a bedroom with a host sibling of the same sex within 4 years of age.

PAX welcomes families of all kinds, with and without kids, single parents, so called 'empty nesters', young couples, and those with young children. You do not have to have teenagers to host one! Families can chose to host for 3,6, or 10 months. Students arrive in late August before school starts.

Please call me if you would like any more information on particular students or hosting in general. You can also visit the PAX website for more information www.pax.org.
