8:00 PM RSVP XV: 'Chiaroscuro' Transmedia Concert
Contact: Cal Poly Music Department   805-756-2406   music@calpoly.edu
The Cal Poly Music Department student production ensemble RSVP will stage productions of “Chiaroscuro” at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, June 1 and 3, in the Pavilion in the Performing Arts Center.

Set in the early years of the United States, the production follows some of the country's well-known founding figures—Thomas Jefferson, John and Abigail Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Alexander Hamilton—through a clever "what if" scenario. At once balancing historicity and invention, the production takes a look at the issues that were and still are very much part of the American fabric.

“This year’s production cleverly weaves the musical style of the late eighteenth century with other periods as we get to see the effects of the founders' choices on their future, our present,” said Music Professor Antonio G. Barata, artistic director and series producer. "The show also includes characterizations of less familiar luminaries of the early American period, like Haym Solomon and Charles Carroll of Carrollton, and one of particular recent historical interest, Sally Hemmings.

The music, lyrics, stage design, acting and singing combine the creative talent of music majors and technical talent of students from Barata’s sound design courses.

Tickets are $11 and are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787).

The shows are sponsored by the Cal Poly Music Department, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406.

9:00 AM  -  12:30 PM Snowy Plover Docent & Intern Program TRAINING SESSION
    Contact: Jennifer Stroh   805-893-3703   stroh@lifesci.ucsb.edu
WHO: Snowy Plover Docent & Intern Program. WHAT: TRAINING SESSION for DOCENT PROGRAM. WHEN: SATURDAY, JUNE 5 9am to 12:30 pm (lunch is provided). WHERE: UCSB Campus, The Cliff House, Slough Road at Coal Oil Point ReserveFACT: Our last count of Snowy Plover chicks on Tuesday, May 25th, revealed at least eight (8) Plover nests currently being incubated and 11 little chicks have hatched and are running around on Coal Oil Point's sandy shores. INFO: Program Coordinator, Jennifer Stroh Office: 805-893-3703 stroh@lifesci.ucsb.edu. WHY: Docents provide a personal and friendly contact for beach users. They promote public interest and understanding, and in turn, dramatically increase the effectiveness of other plover/tern management efforts at the Reserve. The Snowy Plover is a threatened species. Nesting on the open sand makes them very vulnerable. Often their eggs and chicks are at risk of being stepped on or destroyed by unknowing beach users or off leash dogs. This is where the docents come in, and you could make a difference. The Snowy Plover Docent Program (SPDP) was started in 2001 to assist with the protection of the Snowy Plovers at Coal Oil Point Reserve, (COPR) and to raise awareness in the community of the importance of the preservation of this species and its habitat. The docent program is credited with being the most important aspect of the species re-habitation of Sands Beach and subsequent nesting. JOIN US! If you can spare two hours per week - you could make a significant contribution as a Volunteer Docent or an Intern for the Snowy Plover Docent Program. NEW NEWS:: Slough Road is now paved making access to the COPR much easier. NEXT Docent Training *Saturday, June 5th, 9AM-12:30PM* To register, please contact the Program Coordinator, Jennifer Stroh: office: 805-893-3703 stroh@lifesci.ucsb.edu

The Spring Concert is Take It SLO’s showcase event of the year. The 15-member vocal ensemble will premiere the students’ many new arrangements of hits by artists such as OneRepublic, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga, in addition to some of its audience favorites.

The group has received statewide recognition in recent years and competed in the 2010 International Championship of College A Cappella (ICCA) quarterfinal competition at UC Berkeley in February.

“Though this band of vivacious musicians is a versatile assemblage of future rocket scientists, CEOs and philosophers, the members share a love for music and an infatuation with having a good time,” said Take It SLO President Amy Lebetasamer. “Fifteen voices, one beat, heaps of energy, and a strive for soul might make you hear the voices of hip hoppin’, pop-rockin’ angels.”

Tickets to the concert are $5 for students with a Cal Poly ID or $7 for general admission. A discount of $2 will be given to those who wear a Take It SLO fan t-shirt. Tickets can be purchased at the door the evening of the show. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Seating is unreserved.

Hear all the new songs from "Cowboy Blues" and selected tracks from previous CD's Live and in stereo. Free CD with Bottle of MOJO wine. Photo credit-Dina Mande. SLEEPY GUITAR JOHNSON is Recording Artist/Studio Maestro Denis Degher… and COWBOY BLUES is his fifth CD. Born on the banks of Lake Erie, he mastered his artistic and production skills in the “take no prisoners” milieu of Hollywood. He now resides on his organic vineyard on California’s rugged central coast and produces his own brand of rootsy alt/county blues and award winning wines. But the music always came first… he learned guitar from his father by age twelve and was soon a guitar carrying vagabond writing songs from Morocco to the San Francisco Bay. He eventually landed in L.A. and took a job cutting disks at Studio 76 on Sunset Strip so he could record his own demos. Before long he was a well know producer/engineer and segued into artist/ owner of Red Zone Studios in Burbank and Santa Monica. But life has a way of changing most everything: and now he’s back doing what he does best… writing songs and playing guitar in all hues of roots and blues. “So somehow Lou Reed get trapped in this cowboy bar… Denis Degher (aka Sleepy Guitar Johnson) is breaking new ground. Lots of strong songs and an original sound.” James Riordan - Author of N.Y. best seller Break On Through: The Life And Death Of Jim Morrison. http://mojocellars.com/the-music/

4:00 PM  -  6:00 PM Meet New Morro Bay Librarian
    Contact: Karen Robert   772-9268   wednesdays@morrobayfriendsoflibrary.org
PUBLIC INVITED TO MEET NEW LIBRARIAN OF MORRO BAY LIBRARY, DANI PORTER, AT RECEPTION ON JUNE 10. An opportunity for the public to meet the new librarian at the Morro Bay Library, Dani Porter, will be provided by the Morro Bay Friends of the Library on Thursday, June 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Library, 625 Harbor St. Refreshments will be served. Porter assumed her duties on April 8, succeeding Jude Sanner Long, who retired in December after nearly 35 years as assistant and branch manager of the library. Porter says Long is “truly irreplaceable.” “After nearly 35 years as Morro Bay Library’s manager, Jude created and nurtured an exceptional library environment, collection, staff, volunteer program, and Friends of the Library group, as well as community relationships which continue to thrive today," she said. "Jude also provided us with the infrastructure for future growth with the coming addition of the Library’s John Kim Room for library collections, programs, and services." With a background in casino marketing and public relations, advertising agencies, and non-profit fundraising, Porter said she is excited at the new opportunity to work cooperatively on behalf of the community and county to support a full-range of library services. "I'm looking forward to returning to my public library roots, and expanding my knowledge of front-line library management at the Morro Bay Library, while growing our branch library services," she said. To date, Porter has met many in the community through the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce's membership mixer, the American Association of University Women's garden tour, the Art Center-Morro Bay’s unveiling, the Saturday Farmers Market and the Cruisin’ Morro Bay Car Show. “I look forward to getting out to more events to see everything Morro Bay has to offer,” she said. Porter received a bachelor in arts degree in public relations from California State University, Long Beach, and a masters degree in library and information science from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. She previously worked for the San Diego Zoo’s development and membership department as prospect research and stewardship manager, as an adult services librarian for the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, as director of development for the university libraries at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, as community relations librarian for the Orange County Public Library in Santa Ana and as community projects librarian and webmaster for the Iberia Parish Library in New Iberia, LA. In 2003, Porter was named one of the Library Journal’s Movers & Shakers, and during 2003-2004 served as president of Louisiana State’s School of Library and Information Science’s Alumni Association. Porter is active within the library profession, having served on a variety of committees for the American, California, and Nevada library associations. Porter, a native of South Lake Tahoe, enjoys traveling, film festivals, and most water sports and now makes her home in Cayucos. To RSVP, go to the Friends of the Library web site at http://www.morrobayfriendsoflibrary.org/

Contact: Catherine Ryan Hyde   528-7155   ryanhyde@cryanhyde.com
Catherine Ryan Hyde’s Weekend Intensive on Self-Editing In today’s tough market, self-editing has never been more important. June 12-13, 2010. Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (one hour break for lunch both days) in Cambria. Bring the first 30 pages of a work in progress, and we’ll roll up our sleeves. We’ll begin with the broader aspects of editing. Does it begin cleanly, and in the right place? Does every scene characterize and contribute to the overall momentum? Does it bog down in backstory? Then we’ll move on to other important considerations such as dialogue and its attributions. We’ll develop an eye for trimming unnecessary passages, and for honing sentences until every word carries the appropriate weight. Finally we’ll work on copyediting grammar and punctuation, and then tackle the always difficult (especially for our own work) art of proofreading. $175. (I understand that money is tight for everyone—myself included—but consider this: for 14 hours of instruction, this fee breaks down to $12.50 an hour. I believe this workshop is cost-effective, because it replaces the need to hire an editor for your work. That said, if you literally can’t afford the fee, and money is the only thing stopping you from attending, please contact me.) Pay at the end of the weekend, and if at any time you feel you’re not getting your money’s worth, feel free to walk away and owe nothing.     KATHLEEN GRACE BAND WEDNESDAY JUNE 16TH 8PM JAZZ/FOLK/ROCK. "Wednesday's (Blues Alley) performance suggested that Grace's role models, who include Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Randy Newman and Nancy Wilson, have only encouraged her to find her own way. She has a lovely voice -- a lithe, ethereal soprano -- ...Grace spent part of her show providing listeners with a sneak peek at her new seven-track release "Mirror," casting a dreamy spell with the self-penned title cut and infusing Newman's "Let Me Go" with the requisite bluesy ennui...at once smart alluring and evocative." -- Mike Joyce, Washington Post, May 2008 "The stuff of imaginative talent on the rise..The tall willowy Grace brought warmth, inventiveness and humor to her offerings. Swinging gently on "This Nearly Was Mine," she insisted that the capacity crowd join her on "Leaving on a Jet Plane." And when they responded enthusiastically, she used the collective vocal textures as a launching pad for her own free-flying improvisations... --Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times, April 2008

    Contact: Jen Kirkpatrick   805-543-8235   jkirkpatrick@sloymca.org
This year, the San Luis Obispo County YMCA will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Father’s Day. First celebrated in June 1910 at the Spokane YMCA in Washington, Father’s Day is now recognized all over the world. “The San Luis Obispo County YMCA is proud to join in this historic celebration honoring fathers,” said Jenifer Rhynes, CEO. “Dads, and moms, play a paramount role in children’s lives, and the Y is committed to helping foster those relationships.” Father’s Day was founded by Sonora Louis Smart Dodd, the daughter of a single father who served in the Civil War. On Mother’s Day in 1909, Smart Dodd heard a sermon honoring mothers and wondered why there was no similar tribute for fathers. With the support of ministers in Spokane, Smart Dodd launched the first Father's Day celebration at the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. President Nixon signed Father’s Day into law in 1972. In honor of this special occasion, the San Luis Obispo County YMCA will offer a free one day admission to the fitness facility on Father’s Day, June 20th to fathers in the community. In addition, muffins and fruit will be available in the lobby for all dads from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. For more information, please contact Member Services at 543-8235.

Woods Humane Society celebrates Adopt a Shelter Cat Month
    Contact: Steve Kragenbrink   805.543.9316x19   skragenbrink@woodshumane.org
Woods Humane Society encourages you to “Adopt and make it for Life”! June is National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month and Woods Humane Society is celebrating our 55th Anniversary by reducing the adoption fee for all felines (Cats & Kits) to $55 for the entire month! Woods Humane Society has seen a marked increase in the number of animals brought in for economic reasons. Through increased adoptions and community awareness, Woods has been able to keep pace with the growth of its feline population, but shelter staff worry that the number of animals surrendered will continue to grow throughout the summer—peak time for litters of kittens to arrive at the shelter. Woods Humane Society prides itself on being a premier animal care facility and every adoptable feline is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped prior to going home. Did you know that: • Having a cat reduces your blood pressure and helps prevent heart disease • Cats are easy to house train, especially adult cats, who are probably already house trained • Cats are very clean; they bathe themselves! • Indoor cats and spayed/neutered cats live longer lives, providing up to 20 years of companionship • Lots of cats need good homes; when you adopt one; you’re saving a life while providing Woods the opportunity to care for 2 additional cats entering into our facility! If you are looking to bring a loving new companion feline into your life, please consider stopping by Woods Humane Society and spend some time getting to know all of the truly wonderful adult cats who are desperately seeking a home to call their own! Founded in 1955, Woods Humane Society has proudly served the homeless animals of San Luis Obispo County for 55 years. Woods Humane Society is an animal sheltering and welfare organization based in San Luis Obispo that annually places over 1,200 dogs and cats into loving homes. Visit www.woodshumane.org to donate or learn more about our adoptable guests.

     2010 Summer Museum Membership Drive
    Contact: Kelly White O'Neill   805-928-8414   programs@smdiscoverymuseum.org
The benefits of being a member of the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum are exceptional and the Museum is beginning an ambitious drive to recruit 200 new members by June 30. “Museum members are who we work for and who we think about when we plan programs, exhibits, and outreach projects,” says Kelly White O’Neill, executive director of the Museum. “Having as many members as possible assures that we are serving lots of families and that we have a stable programming base so we can afford to offer some membership scholarships to needy families. If we can meet our goal of 200 new members by the end of June,” White O’Neill continues, “than we’d have some flexibility in our budget so that we could help families who need our museum but can’t afford a membership on their own right now.” This 4-week membership drive includes a “Refer-A-Friend” promotion for current members to receive benefits if they refer someone else to become a member, and some reciprocal membership perks for individuals associated with other organizations. For example, all CASA volunteers are offered a discount to become a new member, as are members of the Santa Maria Wine Country Association. Those who follow the Museum on Facebook will also see chances for membership discounts during June. An annual Family Membership is $85.00 for 5 family members and $15.00 for additional members. Museum members always receive discounts on special events or extra programming and can hold a child’s birthday party at the Museum at a discount. Memberships can be purchased easily and securely 24 hours a day at the Museum’s website www.smvdiscoverymuseum.org or by visiting the Museum during normal business hours. Gift certificates for a membership that can be given to someone else will also count towards the 200 member goal if purchased by June 30th. For more information, visit the museum website at www.smvdiscoverymuseum.org send an email to programs@smdiscoverymuseum.org or call 805-928-8414.

FORMER SLO POET LAUREATE PLUS LOS ANGELES AUTHOR TO KICK OFF CAL POLY SUMMER READING SERIES. On Wednesday June 23rd, former SLO County poet laureate Dian Sousa will be joined by Los Angeles non-fiction author Dinah Lenney to kick off the second annual Cal Poly Summer Reading Series. The free reading will take place at 7PM in Science North (Bldg 53), room 215 on the Cal Poly campus. Dian Sousa lives is a native of San Luis Obispo, attended Cal Poly, and has been charging up West Coast poetry audiences for two decades. Her second book of poems, Lullabies for the Spooked and Cool, is published by Mille Grazie Press. Series director Kevin Clark describes Sousa’s writing as both narrative and cutting edge. “Dian’s poetry is hoodwink fast, gut-punch visceral, and always surprising,” he says. “Her poem stories are sometimes pretty funny, and they always turn our conventional expectations around. You get the best kind of literary whiplash listening to her.” According to Clark, Cal Poly is very fortunate to be able to bring Dinah Lenney, who is also working actress, from Los Angeles. Her book Bigger than Life is about her relationship with her politically and financially powerful New Jersey father who was murdered. “Dinah is one of the best story tellers in California?and yes I know that’s saying something.” Clark asserts that Lenney’s book is “a gritty, absorbing, multi-layered true story that grabs you by the lapels and makes you read.” The journal Fourth Genre describes the book this way: "Vivid, revealing, and meditative. . . . The narrator is poignantly self-aware, brutally honest. . . . This is a book well worth reading, not only for some dazzling chapters and evocative details about the American justice system, but also for the contribution it makes to the body of American literature about fathers." Best known as Nurse Shirley on the long running ER, Lenney has been in more than thirty different series or feature movies. “Like Dian, Dinah knows how to carry audience members into the sequestered rooms of their imaginations where the human condition is revealed in the most entertaining manner,” says Clark. “She’s a highly gifted writer and actress.” Science North is on North Poly View Drive (sometimes called Inner Perimeter Road) between the Faculty Office Building North (47) and Faculty Office building East (25). Sponsored by the English Department, WriterSpeak, and the Writers-at-Work series, Cal Poly’s Summer Reading Series gives both the campus and local communities a chance to hear and meet literary authors during the summer months.

“Raposa's skill as a singer and a lyricist are inextricably linked. His voice has a drifting, spectral quality that's perfectly suited to his overlapping images. Like John Ashbery, he's able to sustain pointed ambiguity for the duration of a composition, taking all around the thing without saying it… Instead of just hearing about bone-deep weariness, you hear it, as if Raposa can no longer hold the song aloft and lets it slip to the floor.” -Brian Howe, Pitchfork music review. “Right from the start let me say that this was a fantastic gig… Ray Raposa and the rest of his band brought West Coast alternative to life. Alternative is hard to define, somewhere between garage rock and experimental country music, but that no way does justice to the delicacy of sound over which drawly affecting lyrics are draped like the vines on the CD artwork. It has moments of orchestral layering, some where it should be the backdrop to a good day on a Pacific beach, yet others where the quiet gave way to insistent emotional pursuit by way of rhythm.” – ALT Sounds review, London. PRISM index is a hand-bound, silk-screened, limited edition art book including art, comics, short fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and more with a lino-blocked DVD and CD sewn inside. The DVD features 13 short films from international filmmakers and the CD includes 25 tracks of diverse musical stylings. http://treblezine.com/reviews/367-Castanets_Cathedral.html

RESTORE A SMILE. Seven years ago Dr. Guy Jones of Central Coast Smiles decided to take a stand against domestic violence. He created the Restore a Smile; Restore a Life campaign to raise funds for the Women's Shelter Program of San Luis Obispo County(WSP) . Over the years, more and more local dentists have become part of this effort to combat domestic violence in our community. The program is simple. During the month of June, participating dentists are offering a complete at home tooth whitening system including custom fit moulds, prescription whitener, and detailed instructions for a one-time fee of $195- normally $390. The program has been incredibly successful. These funds are crucial part of the Women's Shelter Program. The entire fee goes into WSP's general fund, which will help offset the budget cuts and assist in keeping needed services available. The Restore a Smile campaign makes it possible to provide vital services to victims of intimate partner violence and child abuse.     On June 30 from 6:30-7:30 PM in the library's community room, the Atascadero Library is hosting an adult program for people who wish to remove tattoos or are considering getting them. The speaker Janet Allenspach, Program Coordinator of The Liberty Tattoo Removal Program, a subsidiary of Community Action Partnership's Health Services division in San Luis Obispo, will talk about this no cost laser tattoo removal program. In addition, Ms. Allenspach will also discuss some of the social, psychological, health and safety issues attached to tattoos. The Liberty Tattoo Removal Program has been in existence since 2000, when it was developed to remove anti-social, gang related and visible tattoos that were hindering people from getting a job, having healthy relationships, and moving forward in their lives. The program has treated over 300+ clients and performed 2,200+ laser treatments since its beginning. Ms. Allenspach, who has been with the program for five years, will be showing her 13 minute DVD, "Erasing the Past, Building the Future" which interviews 7 ex-gang members who are currently enrolled in the program. They speak about their past, present and future lives. A question and answer period will follow the showing of the DVD. The Atascadero Library is located at 6850 Morro Rd in Atascdero. For more information, please call the Atascadero Library's Reference Department at 461-6162.

Sprinkled with helpful hints and tips from a professional editor (for example, how to find literary agents), this popular workshop is designed to inspire aspiring authors and boost their chances of getting published. We'll also follow the behind-the-scenes journey of a manuscript as it becomes a printed book, briefly discuss the children’s literature market, check out the option of self-publishing, and share practical ideas about how authors can sell their books. Bring pen and paper — other highlights include a pair of provocative writing exercises, our “Editor’s Tips on Craft” segment, and the Q&A session. Cost: $10, which includes a professional review of five double-spaced pages of writing (bring hard copy to the workshop). Presenter: Book editor/proofreader Laurie Gibson, whose projects range from novels such as “The Color Purple” (Alice Walker) to the short story collection “Tales from Margaritaville” (Jimmy Buffett) and several nonfiction titles by Brian Tracy, the bestselling business author.     City of San Luis Obispo General Plan Water & Wastewater Management Element Update Informational Meeting. Please come to an informational meeting regarding an update of the Water and Wastewater Management Element of the City’s General Plan. The Planning Commission provided its input to the update at two public hearings and the next step is to take it to the City Council on July 6, 2010. We’d like to let you know what has changed in the element. The meeting will give us (the community and City staff) a chance to dialogue about the proposed updates and answer questions you may have prior to the Council meeting. Q: What is a Water and Wastewater Management Element? A: It is part of our City’s General Plan and it guides how the City provides water and wastewater service to the community. Q: Why do we need to update our Water and Wastewater Management Element? A: The City’s water resources have changed and our water and wastewater policies are out of date. Q: What should I expect if I attend? A: Some of the things City staff will present are proposed revisions to water-related policies, reestablishing a reliability reserve, and consideration of setting aside water to account for future siltation losses. We will also be writing down community comments about policies related to water and wastewater and convey this information to the City Council. And we’ll get you out on time! Please call the Utilities Department at 781-7215 if you have questions. Hope you can attend!
