In association with the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization’s 1st Thursday art walks, A Certain Slant of Light: New Works by Cyndee Howard and Lisa Schulte is a two-person exhibition exploring the notion of light as a formal as well as thematic medium. Curated by Miki Garcia, Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, the exhibition features new works in photography by Howard and neon sculpture by Schulte. The title, A Certain Slant of Light, borrowed from a poem by Emily Dickinson, reveals an intimate, yet complex investigation into the nature of light as a spiritual, psychological, and physical phenomenon. In this case, both artists address a similar theme via their own art making practices, resulting in remarkable works that form a compelling visual interplay between artists and processes.
Opening Reception: JULY 1, 6 – 8PM, THE CHURCH, 125 West Ortega Street, SANTA BARBARA, CA 93101 FREE. On View: JULY 1 – August 14, 2010, Thursday- Friday 12 - 4 PM, Saturday 12-3 PM, or by appointment.

Los Osos artist Nancy Kolliner’s art is beautiful and illusive, like a strip of sunlight shining through the coastal fog, according to ARTS Obispo's Executive Director Marta Peluso. An exhibit of Kolliner’s drawings and prints is on display in ARTS Space Obispo in the SLO Creamery from June 21st through July 21st. The public is invited to an artist’s reception during Art After Dark on Friday, July 2nd from 6 to 9 PM. The exhibit is also open Mondays through Fridays from 10 AM to 4 PM and Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM.
In an artist’s statement, Kolliner wrote: “My drawings are done with a fine point technical pen on Arches 500 lb. cold press watercolor paper. The resulting surface has a unique texture, and the overlay of pen lines creates depth within the texture. I work with simple forms and use their relationship to each other and to the negative spaces surrounding them to create their own narrative. The bottom line is that I try to do work that keenly expresses what I see and how I see it.”

This downtown venue holds many memories for us. It's where we were welcomed into the local music community, met Michael Fracasso at a SLO Folks concert, had CD release shows and birthdays, and played countless Big Variety Nights. And it's where we hung out with Linnaea Phillips and her entourage. We like to make an annual pilgrimage to the tiny stage. There is no cover charge for this event.

His voice is already much in demand at Nashville recording studios, and his songs are being recorded by up-and-coming country stars such as Scott Lindsey. .....Listen to Styles here: http://www.myspace.com/stephenstyles .....Songwriters At Play showcases are held every Wednesday at Fin's. 25 W. Grand Ave (at the beach) Grover Beach, CA 805-473-3467 .....There's no cover charge, and all ages are welcome. FORMER POLY SCHOLAR-ATHLETE
AND NATIONALLY PUBLISHED POLY FICTION WRITER
TO READ IN SUMMER SERIES.
On Wednesday July 7th, former Cal Poly women’s basketball center and prize winning poet Sarah Grieve will join up with nationally published short story writer Carl Wooton in the second presentation of this year’s Cal Poly Summer Reading Series.
The free reading will take place at 7PM in Science North (Bldg 53), room 215 on the Cal Poly campus.
A former basketball star for the Mustangs, Sarah Grieve won poetry awards as an undergraduate and graduate student at Cal Poly and recently completed a Masters degree in Fine Arts in creative writing at Florida State.
Series director Kevin Clark describes Grieve’s poetry as deeply textured evocations about the life of contemporary women confronting American culture in the new century.
“Her work holds up a mirror that shows us how our culture creates impediments to happiness and how savvy women learn to overcome those impediments,” declared Clark. “Her poems often render rough and tumble emotional circumstances?but with a classically American assertion of free will and problem solving.”
In 2005, Grieve earned both the College of Liberal Arts Award for Academic Excellence and the Mustang Scholar Athlete of the year.
“Sarah’s poetry is fiercely honest, sometimes comic, always telling,” he says.
Clark said the English Department is not only happy to have one of its graduates return but is also delighted to present one of its own professors.
“Often set in Louisiana, Carl Wooton’s widely published short stories combine edge-of-the-seat plot lines with deep psychological portraiture,” asserted Clark.
“Carl’s short stories are like artfully intense movies compacted into 20 pages. It’s truly hard to put them down.”
Clark went on to note that the energetic professor has been teaching on the college level for forty-five years, 28 years at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and 17 years here at Poly.
In 2008, Wooton was awarded a Residency at the Writers and Artists Colony in Maine sponsored by the Eastern Frontier Education Institution.
That same year one of his stories was included in the anthology Writes of Passage, a collection of the best stories and memoirs of the last twenty-five years in The Hudson Review, which has been over the last five decades one of the leading journals in the U.S.
The writers will field questions after they read.
Science North is on North Poly View Drive (sometimes called Inner Perimeter Road) between the Faculty Office Building North (47) and Faculty Office building East (25).
Sponsored by the English Department, WriterSpeak, and the Writers-at-Work series, Cal Poly’s Summer Reading Series gives both the campus and local communities a chance to hear and meet literary authors during the summer months.

Classic Horror Films from Universal Pictures – FREE film screenings beginning July 7 and running consecutive Wednesdays (7:30 p.m.) and Fridays (8:30 p.m.) through August 27. Weird Wednesdays at UCSB Campbell Hall and Frightening Fridays at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Sunken Garden will feature 15 evenings of scintillating summer chills designed to bring out the spooky cinema lover in all of us!
About Dracula:
Although there have been numerous screen versions of Bram Stoker’s classic tale, none is more enduring than the 1931 original. The ominous portrayal of Count Dracula by Bela Lugosi, combined with horror specialist director Tod Browning, help to create the film’s eerie mood. Dracula has been remastered to feature a special musical score by world-renowned composer Philip Glass that is performed by the acclaimed Kronos Quartet, lending even greater depth to an already timeless classic! (1931, 75 min.)

GALA RECEIVES GRANT FROM SLO COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION.
Grant will help support educational exhibits during SLO PRIDE 2010.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. (July 8, 2010) The Gay and Lesbian Alliance of the Central Coast (GALA) has received a $980 grant from the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation (SLOCCF). The grant will be used to produce an educational exhibit to be displayed at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art as well as during San Luis Obispo’s 14th annual Pride Festival.
The educational exhibit, Voices of Pride depicts how perseverance and dedication to equal rights can create a movement as large and powerful as the Prides demonstrated across the country. The exhibit will include a Global Map, which portrays civil rights injustice throughout the world. With the financial help and support from the grant, the educational exhibit will be displayed at the following venues:
• July 8, 2010 – Voices of Pride Reception - SLO Art Center located at 1010 Broad Street, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401 5:30pm – 8:30pm. Barefoot Bubbly and Amy Bakes Cupcakes will be served to guests during the reception.
• July 11, 2010 – Voices of Pride will be displayed at San Luis Obispo Mission Plaza so that Pride attendees will be able to view the exhibit 12:00pm – 5:30pm.
GALA was chosen to receive this grant from the Growing Together Fund, an endowment held at the SLO County Community Foundation to address the issues affecting the local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
In only ten years, the SLOCCF has given out more than $14 million in grants to assist nonprofit agencies. For more information on the SLOCCF or any funds, call (805) 543-2323 or logo onto www.sloccf.org.
GALA is a nonprofit 501c3 organization whose main function is to build and maintain a healthy gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community that promotes a positive image through visibility, education, and community involvement. The purpose of Central Coast Pride Week is to bring people together in the spirit of open celebration and community. GALA’s goal is, through a variety of venues and events, to create opportunities for people to publicly connect with new and old friends and allies in order to:
CELEBRATE our lives on the Central Coast and our accomplishments as a community;
EDUCATE the public about our culture, our place in society, and our issues of concern; and DEMONSTRATE our diversity, our normalcy, our numbers & how proud of who we are.
Pride week officially begins on Friday, July 9th and will culminate on Sunday, July 11th with the 14th Annual Pride Festival at Mission Plaza in San Luis Obispo. Visit www.slopride.com for more details.

WHO: SNOWY PLOVER DOCENT & INTERN PROGRAM.
WHAT: TRAINING SESSION FOR DOCENTS.
WHEN: SATURDAY, JULY 10 9am to 12:30 pm (lunch is provided).
WHERE: UCSB Campus, The Cliff House,Slough Road at Coal Oil Point Reserve.
FACT: Our last count of Snowy Plover chicks on Tuesday, May 25th, revealed at least eight(8) Plover nests currently being incubated and 11 little chicks have hatched and are running around on Coal Oil Point's sandy shores.
INFO: Program Coordinator, Jennifer Stroh
Office: 805-893-3703 stroh@lifesci.ucsb.edu.
WHY: Docents provide a personal and friendly contact for beach users. They promote public interest and understanding, and in turn, dramatically increase the effectiveness of other plover/tern management efforts at the Reserve. The Snowy Plover is a threatened species. Nesting on the open sand makes them very vulnerable. Often their eggs and chicks are at risk of being stepped on or destroyed by unknowing beach users or off leash dogs. This is where the docents come in, and you could make a difference.
The Snowy Plover Docent Program (SPDP) was started in 2001 to assist with the protection of the Snowy Plovers at Coal Oil Point Reserve, (COPR) and to raise awareness in the community of the importance of the preservation of this species and its habitat. The docent program is credited with being the most important aspect of the species re-habitation of Sands Beach and subsequent nesting.
JOIN US! If you can spare two hours per week - you could make a significant contribution as a Volunteer Docent or an Intern for the Snowy Plover Docent Program.
NEW NEWS:: Slough Road is now paved making access to the COPR much easier.

ON VIEW FROM MAY 22 – JUL. 18, 2010.
Main Gallery: Visionaries: Contemporary Art from Santa Barbara’s Private Collections
This exhibition will celebrate Santa Barbara’s world-class private contemporary art collections, specifically highlighting ones which include cutting-edge work including paintings, prints, drawings, photography, and sculpture by leading figures in the contemporary art world. Widely recognized as a center of arts and culture, leisure, and natural beauty, Santa Barbara also boasts a population of savvy art aficionados who travel, collect, and support contemporary art. This exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the private treasures in our midst.
This exhibition has been made possible in part by the generous support of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Special thanks to Candyce Eoff, Montecito, CA; Carol Lieff, Montecito, CA; and Wayne McCall & Associates, Santa Barbara, CA.
Bloom Projects: Adrian Esparza, Paño-rama.
El Paso-based artist Adrian Esparza garners much of his source material and artistic inspiration from his borderland experience. Riffing on the Spanish word for cloth (paño), the artist will create a site-specific installation consisting of multiple, painted handkerchiefs quilted together to form large fabric panels. The collaged images on the handkerchiefs are gathered from a range of sources including the internet, personal imagery, and text. This newly commissioned work is directly inspired by CAF's geographic location, considering the California prison system, Santa Barbara (Patron Saint of prisoners), outsider art (drawings on handkerchiefs made by prisoners are referred to as “paños”), the concept of panopticon (circular prisons with cells distributed around a central surveillance station), and French philosopher, Michel Foucault's writings. Paño-rama considers notions of power and freedom of expression in contemporary West Coast society.

Cafe Musique is releasing its second CD, 'Catching Your Breath', in July and will be celebrating with two special shows. The first show, presented by Allied Arts in Cambria, will be held at the Old Grammer School on 1350 Main St, Cambria, at 3 PM on Saturday, July 10. Tickets are $15 and are available in advance by calling the Allied Arts Gallery 927-8190.
They may hail from the central coast of California, but the members of Café Musique have at least one foot each planted deep in foreign soil. Merging of five very different musical backgrounds, the quintet concocts sets of music that range far and wide, from classical to swing music, from gypsy jazz to tango, with a few waltzes thrown in for good measure! Combining the beauty of the violin with the dynamic expression of the accordion, Café Musique adds compelling vocal harmonies to the mix of timeless standards and new compositions.
The quintet features Brynn Albanese on violin and vocals, Piper Heisig on percussion and vocals, Duane Inglish on accordion, Fred Murray on bass, and Craig Nuttycombe on guitar and vocals.

Lisa Lampanelli is Comedy's Lovable Queen of Mean. Heralded as "more than a standup -- a standout," by comedy legend Jim Carrey, Lampanelli is a cross between Don Rickles, Archie Bunker, and a vial of estrogen. She even won accolades from The King of All Media Howard Stern, who called her "a true original and a brilliant comedy mind who'll steal the show every time."
Lisa's rise to the top of the comedy food chain began in 2002 when she was the only female comedian invited to skewer Chevy Chase on the NY Friars Club Roast on Comedy Central. She soon became one of the few white comedians to perform on BET's "Comic View," cementing her huge crossover appeal. A year later, she rocked Comedy Central once again in her back-to-back appearances on "Premium Blend" and on the enormously rated "Roast of Jeff Foxworthy" -- again, the only female invited to roast the man of honor.
Lisa appeared on Comedy Central's "Last Laugh 2005" and her headlining performances on the Comedy Central roasts of Pamela Anderson and William Shatner, among others, received national attention. Lisa's 2005 one-hour special, "Take It Like a Man," was a hit with the comedy network yet again, and the CD and the DVD of the same name hit #6 on the comedy charts. Then, in January 2007, Lisa's second one-hour special, "Dirty Girl," debuted on Comedy Central and Warner Bros. Records, and reached #4 on the charts. Soon thereafter, "Dirty Girl" was nominated for a Grammy Award for 2007's Best Comedy Album of the Year.
Lisa has also taped several specials for VH1, MTV, and CMT, and was featured on the "Best of" episode of Comedy Central's "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn." Known for saying things that most people are afraid to think, Lisa Lampanelli's raunchy, gut-busting performances are wildly popular at theaters across the U.S. and Canada.
Tickets: $35.00-$60.00.

The Gestational Diabetes Prevention Program is an exciting new study being done at Cal Poly in conjunction with the Sweet Success Program at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center. The study is investigating whether a pre-pregnancy weight loss intervention can prevent gestational diabetes and other health problems associated with obesity during pregnancy. The program is currently recruiting patients for the intervention and education groups. Groups will meet either once a week or once a month depending on randomization. The intervention group will focus on healthy eating and exercise with a focus on weight loss. The education group will focus on healthy living behaviors. If you need to lose weight, have been told you are at risk for diabetes, and want to have a child in the up coming year, you may be eligible for the program.
Please contact the Gestational Diabetes Prevention Program to inquire about other inclusions and exclusions of eligibility.

Short business meeting for the Paso Robles Art Association followed by an exciting presentation by Peggy Vrana. Peggy has been involved in the arts her whole life, 28 years as a potter. Her original designs are "fluid and graceful and are inspired by the design of ancient cultures everywhere."
Collaborating with Michael Miller some 28 years ago, they have won many awards. The potter's wheel and the paintbrush are their vehicles through the intuitive landscape of ethnic design and ancient form. Raw clay juxtaposed with satin glaze surfaces produces an endless interplay of texture and color in their art. Each piece takes a unique, one of a kind journey" creating some beautiful gems.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is offering a Seniors Against Investment Fraud (SAIF) program at the San Luis Obispo Library on Tuesday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., to help seniors protect themselves against consumer investment scams and financial elder abuse, as well as how to safeguard personal information.
“Educated senior consumers are less likely to fall victim to scams,” said RSVP executive director Marie Brinkmeyer, who is presenting the program. “SAIF empowers older generations by providing valuable information and resources so seniors can make well-informed financial decisions.”
The SAIF message is disseminated regularly by RSVP staff and volunteers in affiliation with the California Department of Corporations via seminars and presentations at senior centers and other locations where seniors gather.
Attendees will also receive a detailed resource guide that will enable them to know where to go for answers to their questions and how to report possible or actual fraud. SAIF has been featured on local TV and radio in an effort to educate senior residents in San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara Counties.
The program is free and no sign-up is required. The program takes place in the 1st floor Community Room, San Luis Obispo Library, 995 Palm St.

Máirtín de Cógáin Project will perform 'From Cork with Love' at Hesperia Hall on Wednesday, July 14, 2010, starting at 7 PM. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. Driving directions can be found at www.hesperiahall.org or call 805-472-2070.
The Project is comprised of:
Máirtín de Cógáin (Vocal & Bodhrán - the Irish Drum),
Dr. Don Penzien (Guitar & Whistle),
Valerie Plested (Fiddle & Vocal),
Justin Murphy (Guitar, Flutes & Whistles)
The group is led by Cork Renaissance man Máirtín de Cógáin, who is an entertainer of unending talent from Ireland. A crowned All-Ireland Storytelling Champion twice over, a noted singer, a dancer and a heart-beating bodhrán player, Máirtín does a bit of acting on the side (his biggest part to date was in Ken Loach's Palm d'Or winning movie, The Wind That Shakes The Barley, where he also sings the title track.
Máirtín has gathered a trio around him to bring to the west coast of the finest America has to offer: Valerie Plested is one of the finest and most musically expressive young talents to have emerged on the Southern Celtic music scene. An exceptional player of flute and tin whistle, Justin Murphy’s powerful tone and swaggering rhythm have been favorably compared to Seamus Egan and Frankie Kennedy. Don Penzien's dexterous work on dadgad guitar provides not only the solid, driving rhythms that are a hallmark of Legacy performances, but also perceptive and sensitive accompaniments to songs and airs. It took a hurricane to unite this unique group (named Katrina) at a benefit event, and they became fast friends, now turned ‘band’.
The show brings the unique view of romance from the south of Ireland. Ballads of love, friendship, betrayal and a love often overlooked of that of ones own city and county and the Project burnishes them to their original luster, all the while time poking fun at either side of the adventure. The night will have a few dance tunes and a story or two from the Corkman himself.

UCSB Arts & Lectures, Santa Barbara County Park Foundation, Santa Barbara County Arts Commission, and the Santa Barbara Film Commission present Monsters!
About Frankenstein:
Boris Karloff stars as the screen’s most memorable monster in what many consider to be the greatest horror film ever made. Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) dares to tamper with life and death by creating a human monster (Karloff) out of lifeless body parts. Director James Whale’s adaptation of the Mary Shelley novel blended with Karloff’s compassionate portrayal of a creature groping for identity makes Frankenstein a masterpiece not only of the genre, but for all time. (1931, 71 min.)

Rachmaninoff Trio Élégiaque No. 2.
Rachmaninoff Suite No. 2 for Two Pianos in C, op. 17.
Lutoslawski Variations on a Theme by Paganini for Two Pianos.
Two exquisite Steinways, 176 keys, four hands and two powerful pianists face off in San Luis Obispo County’s newest acoustic marvel on the beautiful Cuesta College campus. Rachmaninoff’s powerful Suite was the result of hypnotherapy treatment the composer sought to help him out of a crippling depression. He later wrote the beautiful Trio Élégiaque as a memorial to Tchaikovsky. During WWII, the Nazis banned some of Europe’s finest musicians from the concert stages. Polish composer Lutoslawski survived in part by playing in the cafés and cabarets of Warsaw, the venues for which this rollicking piece was written

An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Ridinghood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch...who raps? They're all among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim's fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone's wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. What begins a lively irreverent fantasy in the style of "The Princess Bride" becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.

Johannes Brahms String Sextet No. 2 in G, op. 3 “Agathe".
Antonin Dvorák Bass Quintet in G, op. 77, B. 49.
Two titans of the Romantic age in the most romantic of settings – the private theater of W.R. Hearst. Submitted to a Viennese Music competition, Dvorák’s String Quintet promptly won with its blend of vibrant and lovely Czech melodies, energetic rhythms and overall musical celebration of life. Despite his lifelong bachelorhood, Brahms fell in love numerous times. This Sextet was written in part to relieve the composer of his anguish over a failed engagement with a woman he was unwilling to marry. To clear his conscience, he wove the letters of her name into the music itself.
Enjoy hearty hors d’oeuvres, award-winning wines from Tablas Creek Vineyard and a Pacific sunset on the Neptune Terrace before enjoying the intimate presentation of these engaging works.

Sewing Woman (1982 - 15 min) Sewing Woman chronicles the bittersweet journey of one woman's determination to survive: from an arranged marriage in China to working class comforts in modern America. Based on a series of oral histories and the life story of the filmmaker's mother, Zem Ping Dong, an immigrant who has worked in San Francisco garment factories for over 30 years.
With....
Forbidden City (1989 - 56 min) During the 1930s and 1940s, crowds in San Francisco were packing the nation's premiere all-Chinese nightclub, Forbidden City. Like the Cotton Club of Harlem which featured America's finest African American entertainers, Forbidden City gained an international reputation with its unique showcase of Chinese American performers in eye-popping all-American extravaganzas. Forbidden City looks beyond Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical, Flower Drum Song (which was loosely based on the Forbidden City nightclub), to show a generation of Asian American pioneers who fought cultural barriers and racism to pursue their love of American song and dance.

NEW WEST GUITARS
SATURDAY JULY 17TH 7:30PM
ACOUSTIC/ELECTRIC GUITAR ENSEMBLE
WWW.NEWWESTGUITAR.COM.
Featuring three young guitar virtuosos, New West has been making their mark as the premier acoustic/electric guitar ensemble. Based in Los Angeles, their original music combines the foundation of jazz with elements of blues, rock and folk.
Guitarists John Storie, Perry Smith and Brady Cohan established New West when they were all students at the University of Southern California. As music majors, New West collaborated with USC to become the first group to receive the coveted Thornton Protégé Grant. It was during this time that the Los Angeles Sister Cities Committee honored the group as musical ambassadors of LA. This honor gave them the chance to perform at the 2005 World Exposition in Nagoya, Japan and the 2007 German-American Volksfest in Berlin, Germany. The group has continued to perform in major venues throughout Canada, Japan, Europe, and the United States. In August 2009 New West performed at the Britt Festival in Southern Oregon as the opening act for Diana Krall.
Recently, New West has collaborated with Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Gretchen Parlato and world-class acoustic guitar luthier Jeff Traugott to produce their third album, "Sleeping Lady." Over the years, they have developed music that combines the different timbres of acoustic and electric guitars to create their signature sound. Their performances and recordings have received critical acclaim and while the members are still only in their mid-twenties, New West looks forward to a bright future.

• "The group's sound is unique for guitar ensembles in that they all play a variety of instruments, giving them a wide range of sonic possibilities, which they bring to bear with great effect on this disc…how these guitarists are so clearly able to create a smooth sound without getting in each other’s way is a testament to not only their arrangements, but also their musicianship…”
- Jazz Review.com.

Currently promoting “Sleeping Lady” their 3rd full-length album, New West Guitar combines acoustic and electric guitars creating a sound that has the sophistication of jazz and accessibility of American folk music. Featuring three young virtuosos, New West has gained recognition as one of today's premier guitar ensembles. Using electric and acoustic guitars the group combines the foundation of jazz with elements of blues, rock, and folk. For 6 years they've endorsed the acoustic guitars of Santa Cruz luthier Jeff Traugott and featured them on their all acoustic CD "Sleeping Lady" www.traugottguitars.com/news.
During the summer of 2009 New West opened for Diana Krall at Southern Oregon's Brit Festival for a capacity crowd of 3,000. Some of their other performances have included the 2008 Montreal Jazz Festival, 2007 Hoffest in Berin, the 2005 World Expo in Japan and the Kuumbwa Jazz Center. By utilizing all the different timbres of the guitar, New West creates a fresh new sound that has proven to entertain audiences all over the world.

Festival Chamber Players
Hosted by John Novacek.
Dmitri Shostakovich Piano Quintet in g, op. 57.
Written in 1940, this serenely beautiful chamber work is a reflection of the ‘calm before the storm’ in Soviet history. Its beauty and accessibility made it so popular in Russia that it “overshadowed the football matches, was discussed in trams, and people tried to sing in the streets the second defiant theme of the finale.” After the outbreak of war and the devastation it would inflict upon the Russian people, the Quintet remained as the last ray of light before the future sank into a dark gloom. In this one-hour interactive presentation, the musicians serve as tour guides through this magnificent work in one of SLO County’s most beautiful acoustic spaces.

UCSB Arts & Lectures, Santa Barbara County Park Foundation, Santa Barbara County Arts Commission, and the Santa Barbara Film Commission present Monsters!
About The Wolf Man:
The original horror classic that introduced one of the screen’s most infamous monsters! Lon Chaney, Jr. portrays Larry Talbot, who returns to his father’s (Claude Rains) castle in Wales and meets a beautiful woman (Evelyn Ankers). One fateful night, Talbot escorts her to a local carnival where Jenny’s fate is revealed by a mysterious gypsy fortune teller. Dreamlike atmospheres and elaborate settings combine with a chilling musical score to make The Wolf Man “an immensely entertaining movie” (film critic Gene Shalit). (1941, 70 min.)

Schoenfield Café Music.
Shostakovich Piano Quintet in g, op. 57.
Dohnányi Sextet in C, op. 37.
An evening of joyous beauty. Paul Schoenfeild’s witty “high-class dinner music” is followed by one of the masterpieces of the 20th century, Shostakovich’s lyrical Piano Quintet, reflecting an idyllic time before the outbreak of war. Dohnányi’s rollicking Sextet was written as the composer was recovering from a thrombosis. The process must have been highly restorative, as Brahms later remarked, “I could not have written it better myself.”

In 1971, a young Cal Poly professor had a dream for a music festival in San Luis Obispo and made it a reality. At this tribute dinner, we honor the vision of the Festival’s founding music director, Clifton Swanson, in a pre-concert dinner in beautiful Mission Plaza. Chef Charles Myers of Big Sky Café prepares a unique menu paired with the finest Central Coast wines–a celebration just steps away from the evening’s Best of Baroque concert at the Mission.

CAF is pulling an all-nighter for this unique 24-Hour drawing extravaganza!
For only $5, you are invited to join us at this event, where you can take home artworks by established and emerging artists hot off the presses! This will be a unique laboratory for sharing, creating, and participating in a community art experience.
All drawings made will be sold to the public at one of four affordable prices ($25, $75, $150, and $300 plus tax); proceeds and tax will be divided among the drawers and CAF. Drawing is broadly interpreted and works by artists of all disciplines, skill levels, and ages are expected to grace the walls throughout the 24-hour event, so drop by more than once to see it all unfold or scoop up that one-of-a-kind work. In addition, a community wall for everyone to doodle will be set up in the Bloom Projects gallery.
There will be a closing reception on Sunday, JUL. 25, 4-6 PM. FREE to attend and purchase remaining artworks.
We are also seeking volunteers for help with set-up, check-in, processing sales, artist assistance, etc. Anyone interested in lending a hand (even in addition to participating), please contact Mari at intern@sbcaf.org.

Haydn Piano Trio in G, Hob: X:25 “Gypsy Rondo”.
Fauré Piano Quartet No. 1 in c, op. 15.
Zimmerli Piano Trio No. 1.
An evening of music director Scott Yoo‘s favorite works to play and share. Haydn’s most famous Piano Trio, written for his mistress, abounds with Hungarian ‘gypsy’ spirit in its finale movement. Written during the turmoil of a broken engagement, Fauré’s expressive Piano Quartet showcases the composer as the link between the romanticism of Brahms and Debussy’s sensual impressionism. A performance of young American composer Patrick Zimmerli’s second Piano Trio brought audiences to their feet at the 2009 Festival. The equally energetic first Piano Trio is a lyrical sweep of Brahmsian proportions and jazz tonalities–a piece whose world premiere was secured before Zimmerli had even written the piece.

Ravel Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and String Quartet.
Mendelssohn String Quartet in e, op. 44/2.
Ginastera Impresiones de la Puna for Flute and String Quartet (1934).
Bargiel Octet in c, op. 15a.
Ravel’s shimmering and expressive piece was written to hastily fulfill a commission from a harp-making company, so that Ravel could commence a long-awaited yachting trip. Mendelssohn’s lively and passionate String Quartet was written while on his honeymoon and is filled with rich harmonies and virtuoso demands. Argentine composer Ginastera (who was Astor Piazzolla’s teacher) was inspired by the quena, the native flute of Argentina, to write this pastoral work depicting life in the puna, the high mountains of the Andes. The little-known German Romantic compose Bargeil, overshadowed by his more famous relatives Clara and Robert Schumann, was inspired by Mendelssohn’s masterful Octet for Strings to write this spirited work.

On Saturday, July 24, from 5:00-8:00 pm, Art From Scrap is holding its 9th Annual Assemblage Fundraising Event in the AFS Gallery. The evening promises to be a lively one with food, drinks, music, and two auctions; an art auction of over 50 works of art and a silent auction of donated goods and services. Photographer Bob DeBris will be on hand, offering one of his infamously fun Photo Op’s. Admission is $5.00.
The theme for this year’s Assemblage Art Show is ‘(Green) More Than A Color.’ The show features the work of local artists, both professional and amateur, who were challenged to create a piece of assemblage art using recycled materials and one green object collected at the Art From Scrap Reuse Store. The exhibition will be on display for public viewing from June 12 - July 24. The public is invited to view and bid on the art work; proceeds benefit Art From Scrap’s environmental education and art programs.

Storyteller Russell Swanagon and Author Toni Flynn will bring together naturalists Edward Abbey and Annie Dillard while playwrights Sharon Halsey-Hoover and David Hoover will present a portion of their play unfolding as a memory poem about the extraordinary models of spiritual contemplation and activism, Thomas Merton and Dorothy Day.

Grammy winner Alison Brown takes the banjo and guitar far beyond their Appalachian roots with a high octane blend of bluegrass, jazz, Celtic and Latin influences that has been described as simply jaw-dropping. Bluegrass for jazzers, jazz for bluegrassers; something for everyone in between! Members of her Quartet include John R Burr (piano), Garry West (bass) and Larry Atamanuik (drums).

The two feel fortunate to share a deep, lifelong appreciation for the arts, and both look forward to this exhibit of Marti's life drawings and Nat's paintings, as well as sketchbook images from both.

"How to Mellifly a Corpse and Other Human Stories of Ancient Science & Superstition" by Vicki León
1-4 p.m. with 2 p.m. special reading.
Vicki León explores the tangled webs of science and superstition in Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and other ancient societies. With her characteristic deadpan humor, verve, and wit, she brings to life the practices of ordinary folks as they sought practical ways to avoid the evil eye, battle stronger enemies, and understand strange and marvelous astronomical events. Copulating during a strong north wind and ingesting magical potions were believed to guarantee a male child. Greeks and Romans placed gouty limbs on electric eels in order to ease their pain. Scythian warriors dipped their arrows in snake venom, human blood, and feces to ensure their targets would die a slow and gruesome death. Many ancient cultures touted the antiseptic properties of honey, using honey-soaked bandages to bind wounds. Many Greeks attributed the visions of soothsayers and diviners to "mad honey" made from the nectar of laurel and oleander plants. León’s rollicking tour helps us see that the daily lives and worries of the ancients were not far removed from our own.
Vicki León’s love of travel, her fondness for foreign languages, and her craving for exotic foods and archaeology would be enough to make a satisfying life. As it happens, however, her passions have led her to become a multifaceted writer of non-fiction for young and old.
Beginning in 1989, she’s written nine well-reviewed books on women’s
history that have sold over 350,000 copies.
Local author, Leon, brings her particular hybrid of history and humor to the entwined subjects of science and superstition in the ancient world. Leon covers subjects as diverse as astronomy and astrology, and philosophy and practicalities of life and death.

This 5-week class is an introduction to the Yoga Sutras attributed to the Sage Patanjali. The sutras are 195 brilliantly concise direct statements used as a source scripture by many traditional yoga systems and as such could be studied for the rest of one's life. They offer a step-by-step means for breaking free of habitual ways of thinking and acting, and provide a map for attaining true inner liberation.
This course is open to all and suggested for students who have completed the Living the Eternal Way Class, Be Still and Know, Introductory Meditation Course, or are students of yoga.

Join us for a one week day camp for middle school students to begin exploring careers. Students will get a chance to explore different career pathways through interactive, fun, and hands on activities in a group setting with local teachers, counselors and mentors.
Sponsored by Allan Hancock and Cuesta College, our goal is to provide middle school children with unparallel opportunities for personal growth, new friendships, and experiences that will help define their career interests. The CTE Summer Camp program is firmly rooted in the values of education. We help campers develop personal character, along with a sense of direction through the exploration of California’s fifteen industry sectors and career pathways. At the CTE summer camp, students will learn new skills and have fun doing it.
Students must agree to complete all five days. The philosophy of the grant funders (SB 70/ SB 1133) is that all students should be career and college ready. Our goal is to introduce concepts that should help strengthen each camper’s transition each year and as they review their career options after high school. We will be doing this through work on the computers, hand-on activities, group and individual projects.
Supervision will not be available for students before 8:15 am or after 3:15 pm. Student packets and expectations will be sent after registration is complete to home address. No registration will be allowed onsite. Lunch will be provided.
Sign up at www.communityprograms.net ($10 registration fee).
Students Entering 7th or 8th grade are eligible.

The Belle of Amherst is a 90 minute one-woman show by William Luce, based on the life of Emily Dickinson. It is a witty and moving tribute to the poet's life and work, starring Emma Duncan. The play will run at TOGS (Theatre at the Old Grammar School) in Cambria; Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30, and Sunday matinees at 3:00, all through the month of July. Duncan performed the play to great success at the Pewter Plough Playhouse in 2008 (The Tribune called it "a virtuoso one-woman performance") and she returns this summer to give the Belle another round.

Neo-noir Film series @ SLO Library

|
| |
|
The San Luis Obispo Library is presenting a neo-noir film program on four consecutive Saturday afternoons in July.
Neo-noir is a style seen in modern films that prominently utilize elements of film noir, but with updated themes, content, style and visual elements that were absent in films noir of the 1940s and 1950s. Modern themes employed in neo-noir films include identity crises, memory issues, subjectivity and, most importantly, technological problems and their social ramifications. This program is an extension of the very popular film noir program presented at the Library earlier this year.
This free film series will take place in the Library’s Community Room at 995 Palm St., starting at 2:00 p.m. on the following Saturdays; July 10th, July 17th, July 24th and July 31st.
New Times columnist, Bryce Wilson, will be leading a discussion after most of the screenings.
Free snacks and water will be provided free of charge by the Friends of the San Luis Obispo Library.
The film series is free and no reservations are required. For film titles and more information, contact Steve Kinsey at (805) 781-1215.
